STK: Pick 10, 46 -> GC: 21, 23, 76

that would give us picks: 21, 23, 64, 76

send pick 21 to Port for Hartlett

giving us picks 23, 64, 76 for the draft. given how deep and even this draft is there could still be some ok players at 64, 76 after academy bidding.

use next years 2nd on Steele or get creative with GWS using Picks 23 and next years 2nd

Pick 21 for Hartlett doesn't come close.

I reckon Port would want something first round not a pick in the 20s and I'm really not keen on losing pick 10 unless we are getting guaranteed overs of it. Statistically picks in the 50's are extremely unlikely to play 50 games of senior footy. For every Sam Fisher or Caleb Daniel there are another 1000 you don't remember the name of. We are at the point of the rebuild where condensing talent is more important than getting numbers in.

Really? I thought he was fantastic in the Grand Final. One of the Giants best.

He may or may not make it, but he's worth taking a punt on for free or close to it. Would prefer him on our list over a few that are still up in the air.

EDIT: Was named GWS's best also
He played in the midfield, had a lot of it, plenty of contested stuff and a lot of tackles.
Here is the NEAFL GF for anyone that wants to have a look. It was a cracking game.

Barrett had 32 touches and 8 tackles

cant agree from memory Rors shared the same opinion as me when watching it

he literally was the last pick in the 2013 draft at pick 97. he's another relatively short mid at 183cm. extremely vanilla. i wouldnt even waste a rookie spot on him. it'd be like recruiting curren again.

i'd prefer to keep the ones up in the air, so they can be delisted next year. rather than take him on and clog the list. you cant delist everyone, you need to stagger the delistings so you can bring through the talent every year
No more superstars of VFL either. We don't need any more players who can't make the jump to AFL, as attractive a prospect they might be when playing state league.

If Port's salary cap situation is as dire as its made out to be, and they're forcing Hartlett out, then this could be a serious bargain opportunity here. At first, I was against trading for Hartlett and others, e.g Rockliff, because they would seemingly cost a first round pick at a minimum, and they're starting to get on in age so will be slowly declining after only 2-3 peak years with the Saints. In addition, pick 10 would be much more appropriately used to capitalise on the imminently closing window to recruit elite GWS talent on the cheap, due to being stuck in the NEAFL. But if Hartlett can be acquired at a minimal trade cost, due to the price of his contract, then the Saints could be onto some kind of ripper trade period:
  • Trade pick 10 to GWS for a bundle of players => Inside mid (Steele) + Outside mid (Pickett/Ahern) + Defender (Corr)???? Would need extra thrown in.
  • Trade a senior player to the GC, since they're desperate for experience and have far too many high end draft picks
  • Apparently Eli will reap a quality pick??? Or maybe trade Eli for Gardiner at Brisbane if he wants to leave??
  • Trade either the GC pick or Eli pick to Port for Hartlett, and front-load his contract using all of the available cap space so that he is on minimal pay from 2018 and beyond
  • Take what is left to the draft
Then, in the 2017 trade/FA period, St Kilda will have plenty of room in the cap to still get a Free Agent, since Hartlett's exorbitant salary would've been taken care of in 2017, and can trade back into the first round (if it was traded this year to get deals done) by offloading one of Hickey or Longer. Otherwise, there may still be hope yet that Hickey and Longer can work together.
But as someone else said a while ago. What incentive would he have to play after that first year? Would he get lazy? Probably.

If you could somehow pay him and get it recorded as part of the salary cap but have contol of it still or the ability to withhold it from him that would be the go.

Probably not legal though:drunk:

Id take that as a hint that Fyfe will be a Saint next year.
Fyfe apparently keen however baulking at wearing the BLK jumper. Manager says he would prefer a deeper black although he's not overly concerned about the Dare logo placement.

Talks continuing...

Longer for Ellis straight up if anything. Not a fan of Ellis though, he's another Mr Negative metres gained - pads his stats & kicks backwards far too much
A Richmond supporter spoke to me about this. I assume his thoughts have been echoed by others but he's been furious about the position they've played him in. Kicking backwards and getting uncontested ball rather than playing more through midfield. Unless the club thinks that's all he's capable of course - in that case, a big no.

The same could be said for any player on a front-loaded contracted, which would be a majority, if not the entirety, of our list

They want something around 10. He's long term contract on a fair amount of cash.

He's worth something more 15-20 but they won't cop that.
i agree with you on what port will want, the problem for them is his stats are comparable to hibberds and he will be moved for pick 25

Moorabbin Ghost and stavro#4 have been suspiciously quiet the last week. Not a single word from either...
Trade Radio whispers say we are looking at trading them to the Pies for Knightmare. He might be a little older but come the off season there is no better performer.

It's hard to let some club champs go but I think the return could be fantastic.

The Hartlett situation is fascinating. If what's being reported is true (that he's been told to tell Port where he wants to play by the end of the week, but that he doesn't actually want to leave) then it's pretty clear that Port are in dire straits as far as their salary cap goes and they are pushing him out like we did say Dal, which kind of takes away a lot of their bargaining power and influence over him, I reckon.

If he says "I want to go to St Kilda" then Port aren't really in a situation where they can say to him "we'd rather you go to this other club, because they're offering us a better deal than St Kilda", because he could then go to them and say "stuff you, first you went back on our agreement (contract) and now you want to tell me where to play, GAGF, either trade me to them, or I'm staying and seeing out my contract with you guys", which means they've have to pretty much take whatever they can get that's half reasonable from us, if they want to offload all of his evidently large contract.

This is why I see this as a real opportunity to get someone on the cheap (one way or another), because either we'll get him at a bargain-basement price at the trade table (because he has a big contract that only a club like us is able and/or willing to to take on), or we'll get him relatively cheaply as far as his salary goes, if Port were to agree to pay a chunk of it, if we were to pay closer to his true market value in a trade.

If we feel we can afford to splurge on a salary, we could get someone, who when fit and in form would probably be in our best 8 or 10, for probably a pick around 20, when a team just 12 months ago were apparently offering two first rounders for him.
I like where your head is at.

Armos name just raised on Trade Radio.

Agreed that trading him while bringing Steele would be defeating the purpose.

Wont be happening
I wouldn't be against trading Armo out, under some conditions (which are quite likely):
  • If he's traded to the Gold Coast - they're not competing with us, plus have a plethora of top draft picks AND are desperate for big bodies, so we would get a good return for him
  • If we get another senior player, but on a bargain deal - someone like Hartlett, who is a shade younger, so should still be at peak form whilst the team is, whilst Armo might not be
  • If the pick acquired from Armo gets young talent - trading on that pick to GWS could wrench free some young elite youth. Not only will these players have a longer lifespan in the league, but they will be hitting their straps at about the same time the club is seriously competing, and should stay at this peak, thus increasing our likelihood of a flag
Remember, the GWS juggernaut is massive. The club can't be aiming for a full-on attempt with many senior players. Getting an elite core of youth will ensure that there are multiple opportunities to play for a premiership which is absolutely necessary to have any chance of pinching one or two from GWS. We cannot aim to pull off a Bulldogs kind of sneaky flag; trading to decrease the average age of the elite talent on the list is vital.
