Steele has done a lot more than Eli at afl level at this stage.
Totally different player though. Eli has some speed and skill but struggles with pure body strength. When there is less intensity as is evidenced in the vfl he finds more of it. At afl level, totally different result. Steele has the physical size and mass to have an impact once he has grown.
Both may make it but at this stage Steele looks way more likely.

Agee. Steele had more touches in his first game then Eli has ever got in one game. And he finds his own footy.

We had another player that didnt go to ground easily, was big hipped which helped at slicing through packs. Now if Acres becomes half as good as him (but IMO he`ll go a lot better than half) then we are well in front. He still may have a little way to go, with that other player being the great Robert Harvey.
It's exciting talking about Acres, Ross and Dunstan resembling Harvey, Dal/Pendles and Lenny. And like you said if he's half as good we'll be onto a winner and that's the same with all of them. Let's not forget Gresh!

Steele's speed is the concern, not as dynamic as Acres
They will compliment each other nicely. Acres the better athlete & an outside leaning (although inside game is pretty good) midfielder whereas Steele's contested game & tackling makes him more inside leaning.

In 2016, Tom Lee was a better defender than Nathan Brown?

Please tell me you aren't serious
It's my fond memories of Victoria Park in the 70's & 80's wiping all the spit off my face that's left me scarred..
So yes I'm one eyed when it comes to talking their players up!!

Imagine if Steele picked North instead of us might just really like the direction there heading
True.

He may be looking forward to be mentored by Boomer Harvey.

Oh wait...

He may be looking forward to playing alongside the silky Nick Dal Santo.

Oh wait...

He may be looking forward to being coached by a warm, level headed human being.

I've followed Steele closely since he came into the AFL, mainly for super coach purposes. I really do hope we get him.

He was a gun junior, in terms of his ability to find the footy. Had some big games.

He has grown and shown the ability to absolutely dominate the NEAFL. I know it's a huge step below AFL, but he has had some blistering games.

His AFL career has been blighted by a lack of opportunities. Not just the lack of continuity in terms of games played, but also in terms of HOW he has been played by the Giants.

I've seen him on TV and in person, and it is much more obvious live. Steele is often played out of the action areas, skirting the perimeters of the contest. He is often started across half forward, working up and back trying to lose an opponent, trying to inject himself into games.

Keep in mind that Steele is a bona fide midfielder. With GWS' depth of talent he simply hasn't had the opportunity at AFL level, even when he does get the opportunity to play. He needs to be involved in the center square, he needs to have the chance to influence all contests, and when he gets that chance he will show what he can do.

He will be an excellent pick up if we do it. He will get the opportunity with us, both the games and position. He will prosper. And we will be getting him at the perfect time, where his value will be relatively low.

On another note, RE Bains mentioning a want to multiply our early picks this year - can you trade 2017 picks for 2016 picks? I've heard the Giants will be more interested in points for 2017 due to some extra academy points needed for next year, and they are set for this year. I wonder if any trade for Steele could also see us benefit this year. If it's allowed, we could give up a 2017 pick that's more than Steele is worth, but get Steele and some significant draft pick/s back our way for 2016. Then of course hit FA end of 2017 to make up for the weaker draft.

Other Teams
I hate other teams!
Steele strikes me as the sort of guy that thrives on the ball being near him & in contested situations. He's a midfielder who can rest forward & while he's not made a huge impact in his 2 years so far, seeing his competitiveness live at the ground a few times this year was enough for me to say he's going to be a very good player. Hope we get him.

Acres will be our Fyfe
Steele will be our JPK

Listening to Baines my impression was the club still had some drafting and building to do. If the club assesses the draft to be even I think they will want to multiply picks this year while quarantining the early pick for next year.

If we improve significantly this year the early pick next year allows us to trade for a big fish in the open market, or to trade if a bid for a Free Agent is matched. Or we can still take that pick to the draft, or cash it in for multiple lower picks. It offers enormous flexibility.

In addition, if we trade a future second round pick for Steele we can't trade next year's first round pick anyway.

My impression is the club wants to keep its options open for next year. Rating this draft as relatively even would justify this strategy.
Fair assessment. What is clear is the club doesn't believe we have enough depth.

If a big fish jumps into the boat then great. Otherwise, draft as many top kids as possible.

We have at least 6 players that will retire or be cut, so we might as well get a new batch whilst we can.

No need to trade developing players at this stage imo. There will be a natural evolutionary process where players will get pushed put as the talent level rises.

Questions are:

Does 3 top 30 mean 3 picks plus Steele or 2 plus Steele?

If 3 picks, who do we trade?

Better off keeping Longer for one more year. It will make our top 2 rucks better players and gain us s better pick next year.

If the draft is flat as suggested, then go for quantity this year and bank your best trade out option for next year for another top pick or big fish.

If we rise up the ladder, we will need another first or second round next year to keep momentum.

Where's all this talk about steele being slow coming from ? Just because he isn't as fast as danger or jacky steven doesn't make him slow.

His faster then ross, dunstan & armo imo and on par with billings & gresh who are more agile then steele.
Slow announcing us as his destination. Otherwise OK.

If it's 6 elite and 24 very good in this draft as has been said then that 3 for 1 with GC would be lovely. You can understand why GC do it as well to have that absolute dominance in the top 10 this year.

Get Steele and 2 or 3 more gun kids (another gresh type talent would be amazing) + Carlisle and hopefully Freeman - essentially this offseason pick ups and we're set for our ascent up the ladder.

Bring on 2017

Do people see Steele as the same as Acres and Ross? Good inside game with a a decent bit of outside elements without super speed. Or can Steele play on the outside more? The way I see it...

Inside: Dunstan, Armo
Outside Steven, Billings, Freeman
Inside and Outside: Acres, Ross, Steele, Gresham

But I haven't watched a lot of Steele. Gresham excels outside, but seems to be a great inside mid as well... Bleedingly obvious we need an outside jet with good skills, to compliment Billings as he develops, especially if Freeman doesn't work out. Did I miss anyone?

For all the positives about Billings pace isn't one of them. Guy is the epitome of treacle slow.

He's unfortunately slower when chasing opponents than when the ball is on offer, also. It needs to be the other way around.

I know that sounds harsh, and it's an easy comment to make from the stands. But he can look to be running hard to be an option, but then looks absolutely exhausted and out on his feet with wobbly legs while chasing opponents. A game built on pressure needs only one weak link to fall apart. Even one poor effort in he front half can lead to overlap and a goal at the other end.

A lot of this is about fitness, and he hasn't had a clean run at it. I hope it's not attitude, but there's no point speculating as that's something we really don't know.

His strengths are amazing, though. A great kick, left foot and right. Good overhead (although we need to see more of it). And very very clever.

I have no doubt that Billings will be a very very good player once he builds the fitness to work harder (particularly defensively). Star potential, if we give the kid some time!
