With the impending acquisition of Steele does this mean that luke dunstan won't be able to be in the same team. Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of Luke but if I put a rough team together it's hard to make a case to put him in. Would seem to have to many inside type midfielders in the side. Thoughts?

It's a good problem to have, I guess form/injuries will dictate a bit of it. Still have freeman to come in as well if he gets himself right.

Not to mention Sinclair, Gilbert, Wright, Longer, Goddard, Payne - and depending on what happens with Fisher and Pick 10.

We are getting some depth now, it's taken a while but I'm glad their being patient and sticking to their plan.

The big difference between Dunstan and Steele is probably that Steele has a bigger natural tank. Tested top 10 for both the 3km time trial and the beep tests at his combine, whereas Lukey-D struggled to play 70% game time even though it was his 3rd year last year.
this has been one of my concerns about Dunstan and its good to hear Steele wont have this issue as much

With Port struggling to move on Hartlett & Lobbe & having major salary cap issues I think the time is right to offer a BIG contract to Ollie Wines & give Port our 2016 & 2017 first rounders with their 2017 second rounder coming back....

Ive never had the boner for wines that everyone seems to have had.

Like Dunstan his size made him stand out early days, but once that evens out his attributes are found to be far more limited than the smaller blokes who put on size (like billings for example).

I'm all for thowing the kitchen sink at genuine gun mids ala martin, fyfe, heeney, shiel etc... But i wouldn't have ollie wines in that category.
Very good player, but not in that top tier... and never will be imo.

I'd rather do that for Heeney

I have kept a running Round 1 side. It's set up like this. Wouldn't surprise me to see Gilbert or Fisher in there was a third tall if we don't pick up a KPD though. Goddard comes in eventually. Can easily see any of those I've listed as EMG being in Rd1 side too. Not sure if Dunstan's shoulder will be 100%.

Harsh on Lukey

Can't expect him to play the entire game through the guts and doesn't have the versatility to push forward so it's really on the ball or on the pine.

If he could play effectively as a flanker I'm sure he would push for high 80's TOG. That said Steele has a huge tank as well.
A huge tank as well? Are you suggesting that Luke has a huge tank? I wouldn't have thought he does, otherwise he'd be spending more time on the ground and others like Armo would be resting forward more.

Even Darcy Parish averaged 76% game time this year (compared to Luke's 71%), despite it being just his first year and Zac Merrett and Patrick Cripps (same ages as Luke, same number of years in the system) averaged 80% and 84% respectively (Bont also averaged 84%, although he spent more time forward), so those guys show that you can play a whole game in the midfield early in your career.

Thread needs more ridiculous discussion.

Steele's most recent instagam picture, captioned "It's been good mate " directed at Josh Kelly, who appears with Steele in the picture. The caption obviously representing leaving Sydney (as per the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the background) and leaving his best/one of his best mates, Josh Kelly. Here's where it gets interesting, walking down the steps in the foreground of the picture are Steele and Kelly, Steele leading the way. This represents Steele coming out of contract at the Giants first (and promptly leaving), followed by Kelly who comes out of contract in 2017. Kelly following Steele in the picture further being symbolic of Kelly leaving next year as Steele did this year, likely to follow his best mate to the mighty Saints.

Lock it in boys, begin operation #getjellykelly2017.

As would I but the reason I suggested Wines is because circumstances suggest he could be gettable. Heeney will be the poster boy for Sydney for the next decade & despite what Purple says he isn't gettable. I reckon Wines is a far better chance. Fwiw Wines has played as a 21 year old all year, is only 3 months older than Luke Dunstan & comparing those two is rediculous imo. Wines is superior in just about every way.

I do like the idea of throwing big cash at Josh Kelly too. From what I've been told, we love him, always have, however we can't get him & likely never will. He's well entrenched in Sydney. Loves it there & is a very loyal type. Let's hope his good mate Steele can convince him otherwise.

He's the pacy outside skilled mid that we would slot perfectly into the side....he's the one I would throw a lot of money at (along with Shiel) to get him, (them), to come to the Saints...

I keep hearing this year is a mid fielder draft. Keeping that in mind I am dead keen on not giving up 10 for Steele. Let's just give them 2017 2nd and be done with it

Either take 10 to the draft or trade down for 2 in the 20s

Carlisle, Freeman, Steele and Florent into our 22 makes us look a hell of a lot better in a blink

I'd be more interested in Kelly TBH than a dusty as Kelly is more the type we need and is a toung gun. Will also be cheaper and could be
one of the best mods in the future for sure
Well Fred and Armitage2Riewoldt might have something to say about that ;)

i dont think thats harsh on luke, its the reality of the situation!!!

i dont think its a case of luke not being about to play another position as he played HBF for the best u18 side in his year. he has also shown he can play the armo type role resting fwd. the only shock when we picked him up for those who only watched the state champs was that he was thrown into the middle straight away when we picked him up. the reason why luke has a very low TOG% is because he just doesnt have the tank to play any longer.

lets be honest here, if luke does not improve that tank and cannot lift his time on ground then he's quickly going to find other players go past him. if luke wants a long AFL career he'd be wanting to improve that tank ASAP

when does josh come out of contract? he is exactly what we need! he would come into our side as our best wing/outside option after we pick him up.

man the thought of getting him. would improve us out of sight

  1. Why aren't saints looking at nathan brown?
In the end, he will come without costing anything, as a RFA.
If he's a restricted free agent, he must be on an absolute mint at Collingwood cos he's been there for 10years & would be an unrestricted free agent otherwise. He must be in their top 25% of salaries in the club
