Righto Moorabbin Ghost stavro#4 i know its only round 5 but give us some goss. Who are we chasing? Anything left field? Give us something!
stavro#4 will spew (and everybody else) but I'd be seriously looking at what it'd cost to get Jack Watts interested. I know he's a whipping boy but he's extremely talented, and in very good form. I think he can be a very high level third defender.
The whispers are he's likely to stay put at this stage though.

Seattle mariners. Boston Red Sox.
Why would he leave now? With the way they are playing it's the first year they are not the worst team in Victoria...

What a time to be alive. The big 4 Melbourne teams Carlton, essendon, Richmond, collingwood are all terrible!! Great time to be saints!! Love it!

Surely it's obvious but what gws/ Gold Coast OOC players are out there this year? Are they worth looking at? Surely they must know if they are not playing now they won't be when it matters??

We are currently spoiled with having Riewoldt on the wing, and I fear that this type of tall running target may cement itself as a key part of our gameplan which will be lost when the legend retires. As such, seeking out a Watts or a Lamb (or both) doesn't sound so absurd to be; a fresh start for the former, a return home for the latter, and a tutelage under one of the all time greats that plays with a similar style for the both of them. I can't imagine Watts would demand too much of a salary, nor would Lamb need too much on the trade table (Cripps 2.0, anyone?).

If one of them comes off, then we've secured ourselves the valuable linking/"get out of jail" marking player. If both come off, then we could have a more formidable wing play team, if it's possible to have them both in the 22.

Yeh I'd like to have a look at Lamb as that 3rd Hard running FWD

The thing is, Free Agents cost us nothing apart from something we have PLENTY of...cap space.
Right now Watts is better than any third tall forward or defender under 32yo on our list. We have identified these positions (particularly third defender) as something we need to address.
If a player fills a need, and doesn't cost us anything in a trade I think we'd be remiss to not at least investigate.

Yeh agreed but at this stage would you say the club is looking at any big fish who are both OOC and contracted...B.Crouch?

My thoughts exactly. GWS are the kings of this
I have no doubt that if GWS trade McCarthy last year then Weller is a Saint. Freo know Lachie was open to playing in Vic, so they re-sign him to (at worst) protect their draft investment.
If a Vic club come sniffing again then he is worth a lot more than if he was out of contract.
And when you've barely played a game and a club offers you a longer deal you take it.
I think it's unlikely but I wouldn't totally rule out Weller being traded, especially if Freo start to get even more desperate for a KPP.

Does the club take into consideration the funny buggers that opposition clubs may play, with respect to restricted free agents? For example, do they discuss, with Melbourne, the type of wage that the Demons won't match for Watts? Or do we try to talk to the player about leaving for the draft, if absolutely necessary? I'm worried that we're a little bit tied up, due to our second round pick being already traded, if we were forced to seek a trade with Melbourne.
It would just mean that we'd have to ship off a player or two first, in order to get what is required to obtain a "matched-offer" Watts, which could be problematic, as e al know that Trade Week doesn't truly start until the last few days....

Do you have any idea (either for Weller, specifically, or with respect to the general attitude of players) why Weller would've agreed to re-signing when he is aware of how keen St Kilda are on him, and how refusing to re-sign would make it infinitely easier to come home and play with his brother (which is presumably a high priority for him, based on the pre-draft talk)?

I got roasted the other day for mentioning Vickery. I still think hes worth looking at. A ruck/forward that averages almost a goal and a half a game would be bloody handy.

Vickery is a huge spud! From a third rate spud farm! Not tough enough and doesn't do enough unless it's delivered to him. I'd seriously reconsider our list management team if we went this way!! Terrible mention I feel!

Marchbank/Steele are the ones for me if we could target them somehow... Future picks maybe?

If you wanted a player as a FA and he signed with you then I don't think a club would match, considering you've paid a "premium" to get him to switch clubs. And if they do I think you'd just move on.

Because he would have been mad not to take guaranteed money as a 19yo with 3 games under his belt. In this game you're one bit of bad luck away from the scrap heap.
The thing his manager would have asked him is "are you willing to gamble $400K on a chance to play in Vic"? He does his knee or breaks a leg and then nobody wants him and he's done.
And as we know, being contracted doesn't rule out being traded either.
