I know Melbourne at the time were an average side but Geary hasn't finished runner up in our BnF in 2012 like Grimes did.

It's a moneyball suggestion. A something for nothing pick up. Grimes won't win us a flag but he could a best 22 player or best 25 player in the event of injury to one of our main mids.

Last time i checked we didnt have too many on the list with 100plus games of experience and in their mid late 20's.

Also the last time I checked, finals contenders and premiership sides have those age/experience characteristics strongly represented in their list

So enlighten me as to who you would target as a left field idea that fits the above mould age/experience and won't cost an arm and a leg?!
Firstly, Jack Grimes isn't a 100+ game player. Secondly, he struggles to get a game in a team full of youth (similar to us). Thirdly, by the time we are contending, Roberton, Newnes, Ross, Armo, Steven, Bruce, Savage, Carlisle will be the mature senior heads with 100+ games experience, we do not need Jack Grimes. Fourthly, Jack Grimes will not be a best 25 player for us & if we got injuries, I'd rather play Eli, Acres, Lonie, Sinclair through the midfield anyway

As for who I'd target instead.... I'd look at blokes in the 23-25 age bracket that would improve the list

Did you guys hear them talking about trade on SEN this morning. Basically had us as front runners for Jaeger. Also said they they Prestia is almost certainly gone aswell.
Theres been a lot of talk from last year to now about us negotiating with Jaeger.. It seems to be building momentum. I wouldnt be surprised if he nominates us. Whats the max we'd pay? Would we trade them a ruckman? Next years first?
Looking at Freeman and now Jaeger maybe the club is thinking get these types of mids in which will need time to get back to injury free for a few years but really start hitting their straps when our heavily invested keys start strutting their stuff and have everyone peaking at the same time. 2020.

Its a very risky game to play.

The biggest question is not whether we go for Jaeger, but what we have to part with to get him from the Suns.. Surely GC wouldn't give him up without receiving a top 10 pick assuming he is regaining full fitness/pace etc..

Right - and who are these 23-25yo types that we should target that will improve our list and not cost too much?

I honestly do not believe the O'Meara rumours, we are not in a position to take such a big risk at the moment.

If we can't get a big fish this year then I think we'll look at getting a good bargain, maybe with next years second round pick, but I don't think we'll be trading our first unless we can get a (fit) gun.

If we ended up with O'Meara and both he and Freeman got back to full fitness I'd comfortably say we'd be be a flag contender from 2019 onward. Although if neither of them came good then we would've wasted some very handy draft picks and a fair bit of cap space. Risky moves
To be fair I don't think the cap space matters. In 3 years at the end of freemans contract if he hasn't come good we simply desist him. Who else will be chewing up his $300k in the meantime? We have heaps of capacity in our cap.

Freeman we gave our 2nd next year which will likely be late 20s. A good draft pick but definitely not guaranteed a gun. Spencer white, Nathan wright etc..

We wouldn't want to get the O'Meara one wrong. But having said that if we did, we could potentially add a free agent in place of the wasted draft pick..

The good thing at least with trading for O'Meara is that his currency is falling week by week, GC would struggle to command a top 10 pick for him now.

Problem with that is his currency is dropping because he hasn't got out on the park since his injury over 12 months ago. I'd be very unsure about trading for him if he doesn't end up playing any footy this year, especially when we've already got Freeman on the list.

RORS what are you quals again? What do you consider the chances of OMeara being able to play at his full potential again?

MSG looking forward to Freeman running out again this weekend, hopefully he gets in a full game?

After last off season's antics of us caving into giving up pick 5 to Essendon after which we said on numerous times we were not going to do.
Ha! GC would be licking there lips knowing there negotiating with us. Prob ask for our first & second rounder!

If we are keen on O'Meara, he nominates us and we think GC would accept an early teens pick should he not get on the park all season...I can genuinely see us trying to downgrade our pick 6-7 and change/picks for 2 teens picks or a player and teen pick, to on trade to the suns for O'Meara. With Carlisle, we only did the deal becuase we stayed in the first round and arguably landed a player we were keen on at a higher pick in any case.

Eg. Pick 6, 42 and 2nd rounder 2017 for Crouch, pick 11 and pick 47.
Pick 11 to Suns for O'Meara.

Imagine if we ran away from this draft/trade period with O'meara and Crouch!

Full potential? Never.

I don't know of anyone who's had as much patella tendinitis trouble & then a complete rupture that has successfully made a comeback to one of the 3 major Aussie footy codes (Aussie Rules, League or Union). Excessive external impact trauma to the knee causing too much aggravation in the area around the knee cap

If he doesn't get on the park surely he's worth about pick 20??

Lets be totally honest here. If JOM cant play by the end of the year we would be mad to take a risk on him because he is still going to take a high first round pick at least. There is no need to rush on him and I'm sure the club know that. We have 13 rounds left in the season before we need to even contemplate an offer. At the moment its a no from me but it could change very quickly.

Harrison Wigg anyone??? avg around 20disposals in SANFL neat left foot back pocket OOC and stuck behind Laird, Atkins etc
We already have White and Rice developing in the two. I think we need to add quality with speed ala Adam Saad, but I'm not sure we need another depth player.

Huge ifs.
Freeman maybe. O'Meara has real issues. May already be done.
