On another note, is Steven, Armitage, Ross, Dunstan, (a fit) O'Meara, Newnes, Gresham, Acres, McKenzie, Freeman, Billings, Weller, Templeton and Sinclair - fed by Hickey, Longer or Pierce - premiership-achieving midfield?

1. How would you line them all up (assuming fitness)?

2. How would that change if the context was 2018 onward?

EDIT: For mine, if you were assuming fitness, and talking next year, you'd be hard-pressed to keep O'Meara out of the team.

RK: Hickey - O'Meara - Ross
CR: Freeman - Armitage - Steven

Has a nice mix of grunt, class and speed about it... Then you consider;

FB: Dempster - Goddard - Webster
HB: Savage - Carlisle - Montagna
RK: Hickey - O'Meara - Ross
CR: Freeman - Armitage - Steven
HF: Billings - Bruce - Riewoldt
FF: Gresham - McCartin - Membrey

And a fair mix of talent to squeeze onto the bench, and that's not a half bad side.

Even if you took out the two old fellas, that's still:

FB: Dempster - Goddard - Webster
HB: Savage - Carlisle - Newnes
RK: Hickey - O'Meara - Ross
CR: Freeman - Armitage - Steven
HF: Billings - Bruce - Membrey
FF: Gresham - McCartin - Weller

There's some class building here.

Yes IF Acres and Dunstan can turn into A graders and O'Meara and Freeman stay fit.
Ideally, I would have our starting midfield as;

R: Longer, Armitage, O'Meara
C: Freeman, Steven, Newnes

Int: Ross, Dunstan, Acres, Gresham

Billings, Weller, Sinclair across half forward and McKenzie off half back with ability to spend minutes in midfield.

Ross will be known as a better player than Armo by next season.

If we go with the O'Meara hypothetical... 2018 finals push

FB: Webster - Goddard - B.Rice
HB: Roberton - Carlisle - Savage

C: Newnes - Steven - Billings
R: Hickey, Ross, O'Meara

HF: Gresh - Bruce - Sinclair
FF: Lonie - McCartin - Membrey

Int: Armo, Acres, White, Riewoldt

I do like the thought of Goddard, Newnes & Roberton all diligent generals down back.

I also like the thought of Billings playing predominately as a forward with stints in the mid.

Contested ball winners are the issue for me. Most good teams have some guys who simply win a lot of it.
Looking at average contested possessions year 1/2/3 then maximum of each year of the top ball winners careers.
Priddis 6/9/10 -- 7/18/18
Neale ( yuk ) 5/9/10 -- 9/14/17
Cripps 6/14/16-- 8/23/20 ( incomplete season 3 )
Kennedy 5/9/9 -- 7/14/17
Hannebery 4/8/9 -- 7/13/17
Dangerfield 2.5/7/9 -- 3/14/11
Steven 3/4/8 -- 3/8/15

Our own young ball winners.

Ross 7/6/6/7 -- , 7/10/10/12
Dunstan 8/7/8 -- 15/12/12
Acres 6/5/6 -- 9/9/10
Gresham 5 -- 7
Billings 4/7/5 -- 8/10/8

Then
O'Meara 9/11 --16/16

Statistically there is some sort of indication that they can win contested ball by their third year. ( dangerfield flying in the face of it a little ).

Ross after 5 seasons has given us that 16 CP game, but statistically he won't come close to averaging that ( like the top players do ).
Dunstan seems to be what we got was what we got.
Acres - improvement not showing.
Gresham could be anything ... or not anything.

O'Meara is certainly showing the signs.

Armitage's 4 CP's against Essendon is his least in his last 74 games.

Jack Steele would be the contested beast we are craving.

If we end up with say Pick 8, maybe we could use that for O'Meara, and get a 2nd round pick back, which we dont have one of this year.
I only want O meara if he comes so cheap we can't say no or he has a period of dominant footy this year. Neither are likely though. He was a gun a couple of years ago but the risk is too high.

If he can string 5 or so games in a row this year at reasonable level. There is no way they will be giving us anything back. In fact they will probably ask for something along with our first.

I hate other teams!
You're entitled to that opinion. I thought it was a negative press we got from his snap chat stuff up and was a publicity disaster -at least it was brief due to him getting suspended though.

Gresham looks good but as i said it will be 4 years until it's even possible to decide who wins unless Carlisle doesn't play a game or some other unforeseen thing happens. All I'm doing is sticking up for a perfectly reasonable opinion from a poster who was shouted down because he wasn't being enough of a cheer leader for the clubs decisions. Last time I looked we had 160 years with one cup, that should mean we are fairly sceptical about how good the decision makers at our club are- not a personality cult that shuts down anything that resembles an alternative opinion.
Every bit of press we get has negative connotations though. I'm kinda used to it by now
