Its not knee jerk at all. Id take weitering or schache anyday and the players picked up later arent half bad either. De goey would help our midfield in a massive way too

Clarke has looked pretty good for north so far
They've played what, a couple of preseason games?

Let's wait for the real stuff... Or better yet, for them all to put 3-4 good years into themselves, THEN compare them.

And De Goey wouldn't do any more for our midfield than Billings will do. He's helped - good as he's looked - by a loaded Filth midfield group.

Clarke HAS looked good, and I was keen on him last year as we all know, but he too is assisted in that by playing for a team that was good enough to make a preliminary final last year.

Different players plugger.

Where's Dangerfield's Brownlow?

So no I disagree.

So if you can win a brownlow you can get a side from 12 wins to a flag but if you cant win a brownlow you cant get side up the ladder. I don't know how North won a flag with Carey in the side. And if left and went to another club he wouldn't make the difference anyway because he didn't win a brownlow. And if they got Judd they lose Hodge. In 2010 both had the same possessions but Judd had 14 more brownlow votes. Doubt that was going to get them from 12 wins to beating either the pies, us or Geelong. Matter of fact I'm sure it wouldn't have.

It will be an interesting trade/draft period for us coming up this year. If we bomb we'll likely hang on to our 1st pick (unless there's someone unbelievably good available) if we come somewhere between 13th and 10th we'll likely go after someone that may cost a bit but will have immediate impact. I also think GWS and GC's fortunes will influence who is available - if they don't improve there could well be movement.

Lots to play out.

Assorted Perennial Failures
Prestia, Whitfield, Stewart & Hurley.
Trade period looking juicy already.
Realistically can only jag one or two at a stretch.
Whitfield has to be the key target surely???
Whitfield and Stewart please.
Finding a deal that the Giants will go for is another question. Possibly our first and third to cover it.

Wouldn't be opposed to Prestia either, but will cost us a bit more.

Gun young mid order of preference: O'Meara (knee pending), Whitfield, Prestia.

Wouldn't mind Sam Mayes as I've rated him since U18's, could end up being a bargain pick up if we could get him to fulfill his potential. Also, can Stewart be a legit 2nd ruck to pinch hit for Longer? If the answer is yes, then I'd be very keen on him too.

I remember an article written with Sam Mayes suggesting the Saints interviewed him knowing that they didn't have a pick to get him. They flew in to meet him and tell him how highly they rated him. It all sounded very US style but hopefully we planted the seeds in his mind. He is the kind of guy who could become a superstar at a different club. Hopefully Lepper is horrendous that sam wants to move to Victoria. I doubt Stewart can be a ruck, even with his weight gain he's super light. I reckon he would possibly be a Westhoff style forward/ bits and pieces man.

Last year I think Gaff and Hannebery were well deserving of their AA honours on the respective wings and then Isaac Smith wouldn't have been far behind and I honestly believe that Joey would have very likely likely been next in line and his numbers reflect that. He had the best numbers after Gaff and Hanners and I think in a better team with a stronger inside brigade he'd have done even better. Would have to give some thought to the next ones in line as not too many are coming straight to mind as being as consistently good/well performed as those 4.

NO Saints
Who you thinking of? JOM?
Just want to see him string some decent games together.
No JOM is a high profile selection. Apart from the tragics on here, Freeman was under the radar.
If we could get a Hurley type and snag a low profile player with high potential, like Freeman, like even a Sinclair (even though he was a Rookie), I would be happy.

I saw Josh Bruce in St kilda in the off season with a fit looking guy with a man bun that I didn't recognise, it was from the car and didn't get a good look at him but the ad just came up at the bottom with a picture of Jack Steele, it may have been Jack with Josh. I don't think he would have played along side Bruce so is he out of contract at the end of this year? was it a bit of show and tell about how awesome Melbourne can be? I'm not certain it was him though but I can hope.

Harry Cunningham is a very low profile player with moderate to high potential.... And has speed too

Would suit our needs & not cost the earth

I'd love it if Jack Steele came to the Saints! He'd be a very handy get.

Consistency over the last 5 seasons, it has to be Isaac Smith hands down.
Hannebery (not pure outside imo)
Gaff
Bennell (has the potential to be no 1 by some distance)
Isaac Smith
Stephen Hill

Roughie to rise this season- Aaron Hall
Harry Cunningham is a very low profile player with moderate to high potential.... And has speed too

Would suit our needs & not cost the earth
great responses, so the list is:
Dan Hannebery 181cm 79kg
Andrew Gaff 181cm 84kg
Isaac Smith 188cm 81kg
Harley Bennell 185cm 85kg
Stephen Hill 183cm 82kg
Aaron Hall 185cm 84kg

i'll add in:
Lewis Jetta 181cm 76kg
Brad Hill 181cm 78kg
Daisy Thomas (at his previous best) 185cm 84kg

it seems the majority of these are in the mid 180cm or have absolutely elite running ability (gaff, lewis jetta, brad hill) or have an inside game (hannebery). isaac smith has some serious height which might be the sign of whats to come. none are shorter than 180cm none are lighter than 76kg, majority of which are around the low to mids 80kgs

looking at our list we have the following likely upcoming wingers outside types (I'll throw in jack billings, jack steven and nathan freeman here just to widen the net):
Daniel McKenzie 184cm 78kg
Brandon White 188cm 77kg
Eli Templeton 183cm 73kg
Jade Gresham 177cm 74kg
Jack Billings 184cm 80kg
Nathan Freeman 183cm 83kg
Jack Steven 180cm 79kg

the elite runner of this list would have to be McKenzie who apparently has a good mix of endurance and burst speed. steven, freeman, eli and gresham are known for their burst speed but not really their endurance. the height is a worry for steven and gresham. the weight seems too slight for the majority of our prospects with the only exception being freeman and possibly billings.

the question I have is who do we see the genuine wingers out of this list? i have concerns around how slight eli still is and also the height of steven and gresham to be able to play there. mckenzie and white look to be pick of the bunch with possibly billings who might be more suited to the flank given how deadly he is around that part of the ground. steven and freeman are possibly more suited to the inside center square work given their burst speed?

where do the people who have seen more of gresham than i have, see him playing long term?

the prospective prospects this year are:
Lachie Whitfield 187cm 83kg
Jack Steele 187cm 88kg
Jarrod Garlett 181cm 68kg
Harry Cunningham 181cm 76kg

steele and whitfield look to be the pick of the bunch given our lack of height for our currently listed prospects. how badly do we think we need 1 off this list? or do we think we have the bases covered at the moment for the wing?

What is a winger in todays footy? All they are is outside midfield runners. Billings is the perfect player to do this. Acres could be. Then there is rooy who I don't like in that role. Freeman if fit also suits that role. We certainly need more outside run.
