I just tipped over 11,000 likes on this site, thank you all for confirming what I've thought all along. I'm ******* hilarious. X
I just celebrated my 1st birthday on BigFooty and only have about 150 posts!!! So how many years is it going to take me to get to your number of posts, let alone Likes? Great effort Joop!

To be fair, teams like Richmond have been building their "war-chest" for years now and they've missed out on a few players and it's only now that they can finally cash in on a player like Prestia.

I'd only be disappointed if we weren't able to attract a FA in 2017 or the year after when we should be starting to challenge for finals.

Laverde would have been handy but honestly I don't want to sit through another trade period full of Dodoro's antics. Laverde doesn't fill a crucial need for us either - would be a handy wingman/half forward but we've got plenty of guys vying for those spots as it it. We need a genuine gun midfielder and tall defender. I'm not totally sold on Steele being the saviour in the midfield; if we're trading for him I'd want pick 10 to be off the table unless we're getting a pick in the teens back. With Marchbank going to Carlton there's not much in the way of defenders on the market; one of the Brown twins as a FA or a cheap trade for Mackenzie look like our best options. It would be brilliant if we could snag Lachie Weller from Freo but other than that there's not a lot of exciting options on the table at the moment. Eli should seek opportunities elsewhere and you'd think Longer or Pierce might do the same though I'd be happy for them to stick around another year to suss out the pecking order.

My stab in the dark at how trade/FA period will turn out:

Steele and pick 17 for pick 10
Mitch Brown signed as FA
Brisbane's 3rd rounder for Templeton

Ideal round one team

B: Dempster, Brown, Geary
HB: Webster, Carlisle, Roberton
C: Acres, Armitage, Riewoldt
HF: Billings, Bruce, Gresham
F: Weller, McCartin, Membrey

Foll: Hickey, Steven, Ross
Int: Montagna, Steele, Newnes, Savage

How do you know who our intended targets are?

Sounds like the same shit as.. "Gresham was just what was left, should have kept the pick" or "We need our own Jake Stringer" (even though he is B-grade and beneath Membrey) or "we've got no midfielders, we need to bring in 5-6 superstar midfielders" (just like Geelong did back in 2006)....
Well I can definately tell you Laverde had an offer in front of him from us.

Steele has an offer in front of him from us

And we had a crack at marchbank.
There maybe others the saints are going hard for behind the scenes but never the less what I'm saying is i'd be disappointed if we lose out to teams like Carlton when there's so much optimism around our young and developing side that had 12 wins this year.
Not sure what your talking about with the Gresham example, I havnt mentioned anything about that.

Not disappointed. As far as I'm concerned our long term key back stocks are set with Carlisle and Goddard, and our mid sized backs are also in fine with Roberton and Webster. If we need a key back, it's only as a stop gap while Hugh recovers and develops.

Laverde may have been nice, but he's hardly a requirement for our list.

Move on.

No more laverde and Marchbank to fantasise trade about, well that's boring as all hell haha.
Look at finding a way to turn a longer trade into steele and then either take ten to the draft or use it in a trade for a rocky type mid (still sounds 50/50 to go)
Probably better to focus on Tomlinson/Steele/Finlayson now..

I'm sure we also let many managers know of players we're keen on and what we'd pay them, doesn't mean it is a coin toss.

I brought up Gresham as an example of people getting upset with a different outcome than what they'd hope for due to fantasising over a more well known prospect ... even though we killed it in hindsight.

If we were going for Laverde two years ago (say he was 20 then), people would be like... missed Laverde.. have to settle for the spud Membrey.

We're on a roll brother! Have faith. We'll miss out on far far far far better players over the years.

I tell you what I have optimism about... the fact we aren't relying on Billings, McCartin & Goddard to win games... the fact we got a top 4 player in Gresham at pick 18... and that we could do it again... pull another Membrey or two and we don't even need draft picks ;)

Your all probably sick of me saying his name but if we don't land Steele I'll be disappointed.

To have what we all regard as a pretty bloody good season with a young list and not get any of our intended targets.. Ide be concerned.
With all due respect, how do you know exactly who our intended targets are? I wouldn't be relying solely on BF :D
Did you know about any of Robbo, Membrey or Bruce as targets before we got them.
Don't worry, mate, we are in good hands.

I still remember Googling all of them. Tom Hickey as well.

Word.

Essendrug selected a lady boy with questionable mental toughness at 5 & an obese red headed walrus that is stuck in the VFL at 6. Meanwhile at Seaford we picked the next Gablet junior at 18. Life is good.

For a combined pick in the 40s? That's over 800 games for us...

Melbourne should have been playing finals from last year (under Roos), yet what happened to all those tasty selections when we met them?

Carlisle will push the B&F and AA for 5-8 years.

Billy Longer, Freeman, two top 10 picks......

What bud are you smoking bruv? as it appears to be a strong strain.
Bruce was a steal....

.....but....

Nobody else wanted Membrey or Weller. Roberton was coming home to Frankston regardless if a club picked him up or not.

Carlisle had a few massive asterixs against his name, which have cost us dearly twice already and he hasn't even pulled the jumper on yet.

Longer wanted to go to Hawthorn and Freeman is a very well paid cripple.

Would love Tomlinson, reckon him and Carlisle could be an amazing key defensive combo.
I wasn't a big fan until his last few weeks, where I think he has looked at home in defence. He has stated that he wants to stay though.

Would be over the moon with Hayne but just don't see it happening.

Sydney did want to keep Membrey, but they did the right thing by him to give him more opportunity when Goodes decided to play on. He was kicking plenty goals n the NEAFL and they said they were sorry to let him go.

I'm not sure you can say no one wanted Weller. Everyone knew he had the talent but obviously there were issues personality-wise at the Suns. But we took the punt on him when others didn't and it has paid off big time.
