They didn't change the rule they just gave permission for the clubs to dump themselves in the shit.

Q: Hey AFL is it OK if I trade away all my first round picks for last year , this year , and next year.
A: Yeah as long as you use 2 first rounders by the end of 2018.
And how are they going to guarantee that? And what is the penalty if they don't? I'm not holding my breath.

Woah there Joff, let's not go upsetting the club that gives us free 2nd round picks in trades. I think we should maintain that relationship. :hearts: u Hawks :hearts:
We could potentially play for a "McEvoy/O'Meara" cup with a full squad of players they have gifted us… :thumbsu:

*O'Meara to miss the clash with a knee and McEvoy kept out of the side by one of Ceglar/Fitzpatrick/Vickery.

If clubs be nice and let them have jarman (who could be a gun, certainly has the genes) for 88 then we are the fools.
Not only does he have the genes, but his dad kept playing right up to giving birth so that could only have helped the young fella's development

Sorry for being so slow, but I've just noticed this and now I'm cheesed off.

Brisbane traded their priority pick! The pick that they were given as a leg up for being such a useless organisation right at the end of Rd 1. They flogged it to Port Power as part of the Pearce Hanley deal. In exchange they get a pick 4 places lower and Port's first round pick in 2017.

So instead of having a good senior player and pick 19, they've got pick 22 and an early pick 12 months from now. Plus they've handed said senior player to their local rival. In the short term a step back and who knows what in the long term. When what they need is to get cracking now.

This is a bit like giving some street dweller money for a really nice meal and seeing him buy smack with it, and the promise of a banquet if he survives the winter.

That particular priority pick now belongs to Sydney Swans, thanks to the Power's incompetence, who are the last club that need a priority pick. They are the smack dealer!

Priority picks should be untradeable. Or find some other way of helping them out. Useless campaigners shouldn't be trusted with valuables.
Brisbane may argue bringing in a developed player will help lift the team more then another young player who may take 4 years to really contribute.
Saints traded a few early picks for players in the 2000's

So far from the senior list we have only cut Curren and Delaney while we've scrapped Saunders and Payne as rookies while committing to upgrade Holmes. We've brought in Steele, Brown and Stevens and will likely use 3 picks in the National Draft. So there's 2 already out of the senior list with 7 coming in. You think that means the end of all 5 of our uncontracted players in Fisher, Templeton, Shenton, Murdoch and Lee. I'd be perfectly happy if we rookied a couple of Fisher, Templeton and Lee though.
Only have 1 rookie spot with the 2 Irish boys as 1 will be on the regular rookie list.
We will either pick a late slider with our 3rd pick and move eli onto the last rookie list spot or use our first 2 picks and pick up 1 player in the rookie draft.

Fisher, Murdoch, Shenton, Lee are gone its a harsh game sometimes

Coughlan and NOK are safe will use 1 next year as a Holmes style upgrade 1 if we trade out our 1st's for a fyfe/kelly deal

Too early for a 2017 offseason hypothetical?

I thought not! So next year based on the same ladder positions as 2016, which could be fairly similar, we hold picks 10, 14, 50, 68 and 76. Hopefully the pick 14 is more like pick 7 and pick 10 is for like pick 14.

Anyway, would love an offseason to go something like Fyfe/Dusty FA, Sheil, Kelly or Hopper with earlier of ours or Hawthorn’s picks, future first pick and pick 68 with 2nd round pick coming back (using the Treloar trade as the precedent) and draft with the higher of ours or Hawthorn’s first round pick and our third round pick.

Would be pretty bloody sweet! Only three issue’s I see is that I think Adelaide set a new precedent whereby any bids will be matched most likely, do we have enough cap space for two big swings next year and who knows what on earth will happen in the next 12 months…

The AFL bangs on about integrity constantly but what happened in this draft is WWE stuff.

The St Kilda deal needs looking at also. According to most scouts one of the best and deepest drafts yet they give up Pick 10 to check mate GC and help Hawthorn out.
:p:p

The campaigners who just keep on campaigning. Gee I hope they bid on an academy player. Would love for the hatred to grow to an all time high for them. Would be epic if they wanted to deal for one of the guns from up north, but the northern clubs hated them more than ever.
I hope Jayden Laverde has bought Ameet a beer with all the extra cash we earned him too BTW

Agree with all the positive comments on here about how well we've handled trade period and just about every move we made was gold. Only thing I don't agree with is those expecting a big slide from the Hawks. One straight kick and they were in a Prelim this year and who knows from there. I expect them to be strong again next year and make the eight comfortably. Anything else is wishful thinking. Talk of a bottom 4 finish is ridiculous. There 2017 first rounder will be worth about pick 11 or 12 at best IMO.
been said before but they were so close to not making finals due to said 7 games, I have them from 6-14 next year, will not be a contender.
Just a passing thought:

Wtf were the afl thinking letting Geelong trade out their third first rounder in a row? What if all other clubs refuse to trade them a first rounder next year? What's the penalty if they don't get one?

I know they are getting the blues second rounder back so it's not a huge difference, but they are playing a risky gane if they don't capitalise soon!
They didn't change the rule they just gave permission for the clubs to dump themselves in the shit.

I want to know what the penalty is? do they just have to sit out 2018 trade period like Sydney? if so thats a week as piss penalty, because by then they will have fallen well and truly over that cliff and have to draft anyway. like everything else the AFL takes a half assed way of doing things and opening up a heap of new ways for the system to be manipulated, when they could of simply said no and let the comp know that its a hard and fast rule that cant be altered....... bewildering. not to mention the ramifications that action had on clubs that were playing by the rules, cost us a chance of getting back into the 1st round this year.

Rules...what rules? #freekickhawthorn.

Why did we give Wright, Minchington and even Lewy Pierce 2 year contracts. There aren't many we can delist, we might have to trade a few instead.
Said it elsewhere but I'm hoping we basically front-loaded them so we could just pay them out/rookie them for the 2nd year while next year helps us get to 95%

This trade period has set the club up for a decade. It has given us the immediate needs for 2017 and options for 2018. We can go hard at a Fyfe or Martin - with the potential for a Danger like deal if it came to it. 2 firsts to sway Freo/Rich not to match the bid.

Or - simply taking the picks to draft, adding 2 top picks in a strong draft, with the potential to trade a future out for a high class player. The possibilities are literally more than we've ever had before. Added to a the fact our cap is better placed than any side in the comp. Unlike a Geelong for example - who did the big FA but had no cap room, therefore losing out on a future trade in Delideo, who could have been the missing link off half back.

Graham Wright: I'm in charge!
Bains: Do you feel in charge..?
Graham Wright: I've traded you a small fortune...
Bains: And this gives you "power" over me..?
Graham Wright: What is this?!
Bains: Your players and picks have been important. Until now.
Graham Wright: What are you..?
Bains: I'm Hawthorns reckoning. Here to end the borrowed time you've all been living on.

Not for the priority pick system.

"Here Melbourne , you need a boost, here's something that will help you in 6 years time".
Yes it did.

Scully was a PP... He left... Demons got compo... Demons used the compo to get the mini-draft pick to get Hogan

Lots to love about this post. Sums it up perfectly.

The other aspect to consider is that our depth will mean that our surplus players will hold some trade currency in the next few years, therefore giving us more options.

In a perfect world I'd rather keep Holmes on the rookie list if it was possible considering his still a long way off.. rather than delist someone that could still be a player.

I would expect any club that doesn't meet the requirements would have to sit out of the first round and potentially the second round of the next year's draft.

Similar to Adelaide's Tippett punishment

I get the feeling the club won't go berserk at the trade table and try to stretch for a Kelly or Shiel unless need view them as a dire need for grand final success. I feel we'll use free agency so we don't have to give up picks, back our own development of what we've got & also just continue going back to the draft. We also seem to have a knack lately of taking blokes that have a lot of potential as 2nd year players (Bruce, Membrey, Freeman, Steele) before they hits their straps so we get them for much less than true market value, thus they're only costing us 2nd or 3rd rounders.

This mantra should set us up for a generation
