Too early for a 2017 offseason hypothetical?

I thought not! So next year based on the same ladder positions as 2016, which could be fairly similar, we hold picks 10, 14, 50, 68 and 76. Hopefully the pick 14 is more like pick 7 and pick 10 is for like pick 14.

Anyway, would love an offseason to go something like Fyfe/Dusty FA, Sheil, Kelly or Hopper with earlier of ours or Hawthorn’s picks, future first pick and pick 68 with 2nd round pick coming back (using the Treloar trade as the precedent) and draft with the higher of ours or Hawthorn’s first round pick and our third round pick.

Would be pretty bloody sweet! Only three issue’s I see is that I think Adelaide set a new precedent whereby any bids will be matched most likely, do we have enough cap space for two big swings next year and who knows what on earth will happen in the next 12 months…
Correction ;)
From the 2016 season ladder we will have Picks 10,14 (hawks 1st rounder),50,68 and 69 (North Melbourne's 4th rounder)

They won 5 games by under a goal, including 1 to us.

Reverse those results and we finish in the 8 while the Hawks sit around 9-10th.

Take out Sam Mitchell, Lewis and TMitch are a wash, and add Vickery... Are they really that much better?
I think the best Brisbane vs Hawthorn analogy is to go to YouTube and watch the 2005 St Kilda vs Brisbane game at Docklands.

That is what is facing Hawthorn next year: when the fall comes, it comes quickly.

And irrespective of the analogy, watch the game anyway.

Massive fun.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...-trade-for-brett-deledio-20161020-gs761q.html

...The Western Bulldogs made a last-minute push for Brett Deledio only after it became apparent the star Tiger could be headed for the already formidable Greater Western Sydney.

The Dogs had no interest in Deledio throughout the trade period, primarily because he seemed likely to go to Geelong, but coach Luke Beveridge is understood to have told the club to act on him once it emerged that the Giants were moving in.

Deledio did a medical at the Bulldogs on Wednesday, having already toured GWS headquarters, and nominated the Giants as his new club of choice that night.

The Bulldogs outlasted GWS in a preliminary final this year before going on to defeat Sydney and win the club's first premiership since 1954. Beveridge was among those in football troubled by how much stronger the Giants would be next year with a player of Deledio's calibre in their team....

Some mad campaigner Bevo, huh?! That's some Game of Thrones type strategy.

Love to have been there for the courtesy tour of the bulldogs modest facilities after Lids had been to the GWS palace. I bet that was a hard decision for him.

I reckon we bring in 2 big fish, we effectively have 3 first rounders we can use to get it done. We're ready for the cream now....

I think FA will be a waste of time, there's not many names available even now. There's no way Freo or Richmond let either Fyfe or Martin leave, and the next best is probably Trengove, looking at him probably depends on how Carlisle goes in 2017, and how Goddard recovers.

GWS must be the target again. Shiel, Cognilio, Hopper & Kelly all out of contract. We should offer big deals to all of them, forcing GWS to pull out the cheque book and squeeze one out. They also have Tomlinson, Patton, Devon Smith, Buntine & Zac Williams to resign, amongst others.

Bontompelli & Heeney are worth an enquiry, but I think they stay put. 2m Peter, Schache and Hipwood also out of contract if we want to bolster our KPP stocks.

But those mids from GWS must be the target.

Why people dissing carltons trade for marchbank, they traded the first round from welding for marchbank and Pickett not there own future first round
Good to see Carlton getting out there and getting a trade. I agree that they should look at getting out of football altogether, and this may be a good first step for them

Possibly don't have to go back that far. Maybe Saints 2011-2013 is as far back as you need to go

I get the feeling the club won't go berserk at the trade table and try to stretch for a Kelly or Shiel unless need view them as a dire need for grand final success. I feel we'll use free agency so we don't have to give up picks, back our own development of what we've got & also just continue going back to the draft. We also seem to have a knack lately of taking blokes that have a lot of potential as 2nd year players (Bruce, Membrey, Freeman, Steele) before they hits their straps so we get them for much less than true market value, thus they're only costing us 2nd or 3rd rounders.

This mantra should set us up for a generation

I actually don't think we'll throw everything to land one at all costs. Hasn't been our strategy. If one falls in our lap for the right price then great.

Suspect we will use those picks tirade for a young gun with a long term future.

But who knows.
Why not both?

Get an A Grade Free Agent for nothing (just offer them a big contract), Trade a First Rounder For a GWS kid aka Josh Kelly, and use our remaining First Rounder at the Draft.

Could net us all of Fyfe, Kelly, and 2017 1st Rounder. Premiership 2018.

Agree. We've been all about value in the trade/FA dealings over the past few years. Clubs going after a big fish generally have to pay fair value for them (O'Meara and Prestia coming at a high price), while we've been finding ways to improve the team without compromising our position. This year the only player we paid for is Jack Steele, and then we snagged two bonus second rounders from Hawthorn which you could say has meant that we have added Steele and Freeman (who cost a second round pick each) simply for the price of swapping our 2016 1st rounder for a 2017 first rounder. Gresham and Carlisle last year essentially came at the cost of a second rounder as well if you believe that we would have selected Gresham with pick 5.

With this behaviour in mind I believe we'll be going very hard at any free agents who will improve the team over the next two years. Maybe we'll trade out some players with value who can't break into the team but I don't see us giving up a crucial piece of the puzzle for a different piece. Two players we could offer up a big trade for would be Kelly and Shiel, but I wouldn't be surprised if we keep going for value trades and looking at landing a big fish via free agency.

Cant it be matched?

If so we need to trade.

Kelly would cost significantly more than a 1st rounder. Maybe if we threw Longer into the picture after a better 2017 they could consider it.

The landscape is changing so quickly that I reckon it will be even more fluid next year. Two years ago to get Treloar it took two first with a second back. Next year it might not be quite as hard with more clubs likely to want to recruit for the now and swapping players as needs arise and not hold out for top compo as much. For example if GWS want a ruckman and they think Hickey works they might ask for him for a straight swap with a guy they rate like Hopper as he's taking space while they need a ruck now.
