After months of tantrums, bannings, character assassinations, solving the worlds drug problems , planning the demise of much loved players WE all made it out the other side .

Why not both?

Get an A Grade Free Agent for nothing (just offer them a big contract), Trade a First Rounder For a GWS kid aka Josh Kelly, and use our remaining First Rounder at the Draft.

Could net us all of Fyfe, Kelly, and 2017 1st Rounder. Premiership 2018.
On the money!
We'll be big players next year for sure.

Interesting read on the AFL Website:

Saints set sights on bumper 2017 free agency crop

ST KILDA has set its sights on a bumper 2017 free agency crop headlined by Fremantle superstar Nat Fyfe and Richmond's Dustin Martin.

The Saints emerged as one of the biggest winners of this year's NAB AFL Trade Period, recruiting Greater Western Sydney's Jack Steele and the Western Bulldogs' Koby Stevens to bolster their midfield, while also bringing in Collingwood free agent Nathan Brown.

They also secured an extra first-round pick in next year's draft from Hawthorn at a bargain-basement price.

The Hawks, desperate to land Jaeger O'Meara from Gold Coast, gave up their future first-round selection and picks 23 and 36 in this year's draft in exchange for the Saints' No.10 and 68 picks.

With two first-round picks at their disposal next year, the Saints will be well placed heading into what's expected to be another strong draft.

But they're just as likely to turn their attention towards a free agency class headlined by Fyfe, Martin, Sydney Swans on-baller Josh Kennedy and Hawthorn's Luke Breust.

And with the likes of Greater Western Sydney recruit Brett Deledio requesting trades despite being contracted, St Kilda chief operating officer Ameet Bains expects there'll be plenty of players looking for a new home.

"We were still trying as late as 1pm yesterday to move up in the draft order but we'd made the decision to hang on to both first-round draft picks for next year," Bains told EON Sports Radio on Friday.

"It gives you a very strong draft hand if you take those picks to the draft next year but in the environment where player movement now is off the charts, it does give you some very strong currency in terms of getting some quality players to your club as well."

Richmond and the Brisbane Lions will also have two first-round picks in next year's draft, while Hawthorn has always appealed to players on the move and should have space in its salary cap following the departure of veterans Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis.

The Saints finished ninth on the ladder this season and will be aiming to push for the finals along with Melbourne and Fremantle, who both improved their lists during the trade period.

But Bains says he can't remember a time in his five years at St Kilda when they were viewed so favourably as a destination for players on the move.

"We are in a lot more conversations," he said.

"For the first time in my time, we had multiple players who were keen to join our club that, for various reasons at our end, we couldn't pursue. It's a great turnaround."

I really wish we got to see the Panther in the seniors towards the end of the year, his VFL form was elite. Hope we keep him on, provides depth and I honestly think he could add another dimension to our forward line if given the opportunity.
Epic use of elite.

The campaigners who just keep on campaigning. Gee I hope they bid on an academy player. Would love for the hatred to grow to an all time high for them. Would be epic if they wanted to deal for one of the guns from up north, but the northern clubs hated them more than ever.
I hope Jayden Laverde has bought Ameet a beer with all the extra cash we earned him too BTW
Elite use of epic.

I wonder who the players were keen to join us but we couldn't pursue from our end..
I got a list of players in August whose managers had contacted us. Ill have a look and get back to you.
Obviously a manager contacting in Aug is different to trade week though

Graham Wright: I'm in charge!
Bains: Do you feel in charge..?
Graham Wright: I've traded you a small fortune...
Bains: And this gives you "power" over me..?
Graham Wright: What is this?!
Bains: Your players and picks have been important. Until now.
Graham Wright: What are you..?
Bains: I'm Hawthorns reckoning. Here to end the borrowed time you've all been living on.
I dont know what it is but i love what you did there!

Why did we give Wright, Minchington and even Lewy Pierce 2 year contracts. There aren't many we can delist, we might have to trade a few instead.
Reasons

- Likely retirements in 2017 3-4 of Roo, Gilbert, Montagna, Dempster
- We didn't know we would have 2 2017 1sts to work with when we gave them deals
- We can trade always Pierce/Longer and maybe Holmes if we don't care what we get for them
- We can move Minchington or Wright or both to the rookie list next year if need be as we have to draft or let go Coughlan or NOK in 2017
- Rewarding their efforts and demonstrating faith in them.
- We will probably need them this season
- We didn't know we would get Stevens
- We really didn't know we would get Brown

Next year we likely draft 2 players and upgrade either NOK or Coughlan to meet draft requirements, recruit 1-2 players as f/a's or traded.

4-6 spots we need to free up assuming we go 3 years without a player requesting a trade.

3 retirements
2 players moved to the rookie list
1 player for unders/nothing/steak knives

I reckon we bring in 2 big fish, we effectively have 3 first rounders we can use to get it done. We're ready for the cream now....

I think FA will be a waste of time, there's not many names available even now. There's no way Freo or Richmond let either Fyfe or Martin leave, and the next best is probably Trengove, looking at him probably depends on how Carlisle goes in 2017, and how Goddard recovers.

GWS must be the target again. Shiel, Cognilio, Hopper & Kelly all out of contract. We should offer big deals to all of them, forcing GWS to pull out the cheque book and squeeze one out. They also have Tomlinson, Patton, Devon Smith, Buntine & Zac Williams to resign, amongst others.

Bontompelli & Heeney are worth an enquiry, but I think they stay put. 2m Peter, Schache and Hipwood also out of contract if we want to bolster our KPP stocks.

But those mids from GWS must be the target.
Apparently Fyfe was closer to getting to the blues than you'd imagine. He could be a genuine mover, but maybe we're behind them at the moment.

Wrong thread I know but.....

Caroline Wilson pretty certain that North Melbourne and Bulldogs are going to get the Good Friday game, despite the Bulldogs and Saints putting in a joint submission.
She did say it won't necessarily a lock for the same teams every year, but once they've got it I think it will be hard to take it away.

Saints overlooked for a blockbuster once again.

She also said AFL need to actually stand up and make the tough call n the Brownlow. It's gone on far too long. Duh!

Also very shocked with Hawthorns trading and getting rid of Sam Mitchell.

To be fair, North have been asking for that game for years.

Now they are on the nose they give it to them. I think the guy who gave Carlton 6 Friday night games is at it again. Maybe they shouldn't let Mike Fitzpatrick near footy any more.
