THE AFL has ticked off on St Kilda’s draft heist of Hawthorn because both clubs agreed to the deal “with their eyes wide open”.

Up to eight rivals were bewildered at the swap of picks, which is guaranteed to net the Saints a minimum win of 848 draft points.

If the Hawks follow Fremantle’s unexpected crash down the ladder next season, the Saints could end up 2863 points in front — nearly the equivalent of a No. 1 draft pick for free.

In a deal short on fanfare but big on industry interest, Hawthorn last Friday swapped picks 23, 36 and its first pick in next year’s draft for picks 10 and 68.

The Herald Sun reported last year that a discrepancy of more than 200 points would trigger alarm bells and was unlikely to be accepted by the AFL.

But the AFL said that because the deal wasn’t tied to any other and with it evident the Hawks were targeting pick 10 to land Jaeger O’Meara, it was comfortable with the lopsided trade.

“It was a commercial decision for St Kilda to get involved,” a league spokesman said.

“Hawthorn didn’t have to go through with it, but they did.”

One club official suspected there were more “dodgy deals” done this year than ever before.

“Ken (AFL integrity officer Ken Wood) can query you when you’re out 25 points and moving from 65 to 67,” a list manager said.

“And all of a sudden this (Saints-Hawks trade) goes through — 1000 points different. I couldn’t understand it.

“The AFL brought in the points balance system to give value to picks and regulate trading and they go and let this happen.

“We’re not annoyed … it’s more bewilderment.”

Wood was absent from AFL House last Friday, but was involved in internal talks before the deal was approved.

AFL analyst Kane Cornes said that if the Hawks didn’t land O’Meara it would have been “one of the worst trades ever”.

Clubs were also left questioning the generosity of Carlton, which effectively brokered the O’Meara trade in the dying minutes by gifting Hawthorn a future selection.

The Blues traded Greater Western Sydney’s second-round selection next year for three picks — 48, 66 and 70.

The trio of late selections is the equivalent points of pick 40-41, a third-round selection.

Hawks list manager Graham Wright admitted there was some miscommunication with Gold Coast, when the O’Meara deal remained in limbo despite the acquisition of No. 10.

One club said the Hawks had “sold the club’s future for two years” just to land the Suns’ midfielder and struck the deal with St Kilda out of desperation.

Hawthorn does not enter next month’s draft until pick 88 and they have already punted their first two picks in next year’s draft.

They are scheduled to enter the 2017 talent pool with the Giants’ second-round pick.

A STUNNING SWAP

HAWTHORN secured picks 10 + 68 = 1454 points.

ST KILDA secured picks 23 + 36 + 2017 pick 1-18 = between 2302 and 4317 points.

If Hawks win 2017 flag, Saints win trade by 848 points (equivalent of pick 22 for free).

If Hawks finish fifth in 2017, as they did this year, Saints win trade by 1024 points (equivalent of pick 17).

If Hawks get 2017 wooden spoon, Saints win trade by 2863 points (equivalent of pick 1-2).

Don't let player managers control the media. Don't let the media control you. Employ very intelligent people who know their football, rather than football people who're pretty intelligent.

If they can't do those things, clubs deserve to get ****** over, and that includes us in the past and future. If we draft well, our teams more or less nailed 13-16 IMO, and done reasonably well the two years before without being amazing.

As someone who lives in Sydney.... Stop dreaming of picking up Heeney!

It. Won't. Happen

He is the absolute future of the club up here. Everything is about Heeney moving to the midfield. Heeney an upgrade on Mitchell. Heeney will be the Swans best player in 2 years. Heeney is Christ reincarnated to the Swans supporters & culture up here

They will trade every single other player on the list before Heeney.... They'd even trade Buddy out to keep Heeney.

Hanners or Parker, well that's a different story.... ;)

Looking to the future. Have a lot of ears to the ground and conversations with managers.

Nat Fyfe, Dustin Martin, David Zaharakis, both Josh Kennedys, Jackson Trengrove, Luke Bruest, Daniel Menzel, Sam Reid, Steve Motlop and Rory Thompson are all players I'd like to have some sort of interest in.

Some on potential, having been wrecked by squibishness or injury, some tactically and some for genuine Gun-ness.

'Heeney' should be covered by the swear filter - just so we don't have to see his name in trade threads.

they're 25, not 40… both in the top handful of mids in the comp, will play for another 8 years and won't cost any draft picks.
But they will both 27 in their first year with the Saints with 5 years of good footy max left in both of them.

Judd didn't win Carlton a premiership, Franklin didn't win a premiership for Sydney, Dangerfield won't win Geelong a premiership.

The concept that all you need to get you over the line to a premiership is just one more big gun is a furphy and I hope we don't fall for it.

Who says we can't fit them in? Take advantage of our cap space by front loading and such, so that as their careers are winding down we'll be able to pay more for our younger guys and new acquisitions.

Woah there Joff, let's not go upsetting the club that gives us free 2nd round picks in trades. I think we should maintain that relationship. :hearts: u Hawks :hearts:
Fair point. If they fall off the cliff like i think they will we could be getting pick 2. Yep we should really be loving hawks. Although theyve had their time and they are rorting the system blind

Not exactly Fyfe or Dusty (or Shiel or Jels), but Zaka or Trengove or Breust for free has some appeal. The freeness being the operative.

I'm with some others on hoping for some longevity and an era. But retaining one of those firsts for a kid to go with, say, a FA and perhaps a younger traded gun would be lovely. Just not sure we can afford two guns!

I wonder who the players were keen to join us but we couldn't pursue from our end..
Just to reply again Stan but I think one may have been Tom Lamb. Don't know anything about his contract status but I think his family are keen to see him in the rwb. Ricoh just the type of coach to get the most out of him

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...-trade-for-brett-deledio-20161020-gs761q.html

...The Western Bulldogs made a last-minute push for Brett Deledio only after it became apparent the star Tiger could be headed for the already formidable Greater Western Sydney.

The Dogs had no interest in Deledio throughout the trade period, primarily because he seemed likely to go to Geelong, but coach Luke Beveridge is understood to have told the club to act on him once it emerged that the Giants were moving in.

Deledio did a medical at the Bulldogs on Wednesday, having already toured GWS headquarters, and nominated the Giants as his new club of choice that night.

The Bulldogs outlasted GWS in a preliminary final this year before going on to defeat Sydney and win the club's first premiership since 1954. Beveridge was among those in football troubled by how much stronger the Giants would be next year with a player of Deledio's calibre in their team....

Some mad campaigner Bevo, huh?! That's some Game of Thrones type strategy.

Love to have been there for the courtesy tour of the bulldogs modest facilities after Lids had been to the GWS palace. I bet that was a hard decision for him.
Hes a legend bevo. Thats the thinking rossy shouldve had with ball and jolly in2010. If he did wed have our second flag.
Spewing we didnt get bevo as a coach BUT RICHO I believe is a better tactician. Maybe not the emotional inspiring leader but hes pretty good. Good enough for flags. We'll be right. I believe we are building to multiple flags. Fantastic rebuild. Go and have a look at our 2013 list. To be where we are in 2017 is unbelievable. 2013 saints maybe worse than fitzroy 1996

I was wondering about Lamb. Can we get him in rookie draft???
Defo worth the shot. Second rounder height pace skill i reckon he was just a kid lost in another city. Get him saints. I smell a bargain.

i heard the American guy talking on SEN the other day, I forget his name but he was saying we are just getting used to FA and the fluidity of movement that will be coming our way. He says we need to get over the idea of following a player and start getting used to loving our club and seeing the players as expendable. I personally think it will ruin the game in the decades to come. We are so desperate to Americanise we have forgotten the loyalty aspects that appeal to many. Anyway I guess I'm saying is if we want to play in GFs we need to just play the game the way others do and start getting guys in for a tilt.
