What use is Goldstein at age 29, when really i doubt we can challenge for a flag in the next 2-3 years
Goldstein is retiring at 31 now? You know Sandilands is going around again at 35. Goldstein is just reaching his peak. To trade him would be lunacy and we wouldn't get back the value that he is worth. Fit he is top 5 player in the competition. Week in week out he bashes in the brains of the opposing ruck and hides two or three mids for good value too. Didn't notice it was ArjenTheGreat that floated that trade but I didn't think it seemed that silly considering where O'Meara and Swallow are at with injuries, still Goldstein I think has that sort of value. Just a champion player and part of the fabric of the club. Would be a massive on-field and off-field misstep to trade a man that would retire the club's greatest ever ruckman if he was to finish his career at North.

I just feel in our development we would be better placed beginning this rebuild getting talented kids in rather than keep a ruckman who will play for us during a time we can't win a flag.

that's actually my criticism of Goldstein.. he isn't aggressive enough and cops too much lip and physical bumps from the opposition (ala Port Adel game a few weeks back where Hartlett, Gray etc. all went at him before the first bounce and he dint give a yelp, was infuriating to watch). He is one of the least physically imposing ruckman i reckon and clubs to tend to target him. In saying that, i acknowledge his injury issues this year and i reckon he will be back to his contested marking best next season after an extended lay off and surgery.

That's silly, you need senior blokes but tarrant or higgins are worth more value to us teaching the kids around them than a ruckman who's importance in the team i'm not trying to undersell but i'd say is a position that our backup can compete in right now

Not sure about that.

Forget the notion of "can't win a flag". With free agency and smart list management, there should not be such a thing on our mind. Hawthorn is rebuilding on the fly, blooding in Hartung, Sicily, O'Brien, Litherland and others, adding Frawley, while being hot favorites for a 4 peat. No reason why we can't blood Clarke, Mountford, Wagner, Wood, Anderson etc, while rebuilding on the go.

The more and more I look at the upcoming trade period/draft I think what a sham this competition has become. The domination GWS and GC have over them is crazy and will make them powerhouses for years to come.

They will end up having between them at least 10 of the first 20 to 25 picks. They'll end up with a heap of future picks for next year as well, as a competition it's unsustainable.

The AFL have created a mess and I can't see how they'll fix it.

Saw someone suggest that the other 16 clubs should boycott trading with them. Wouldn't happen but it would be a fair reaction. Only something as similarly disastrous happening to those clubs, GWS particularly, will prevent a completely corporately orchestrated period of dominance.

I've mentioned a boycott in the past but like you said it won't happen.

When Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal or Man City get relegated come back to me..
Fair point but it's unlikely we'll see Hawthorn, Geelong or Sydney finish in the bottom 4 any time soon either. There are probably more teams whose fans would expect to win the Premiership or finish top 4 in the PL this coming season than there were in the AFL this season. It's probably a lot more even as a competition than the AFL at the moment.

Any player can look good against Shitmond. He's not just soft, he's small, his kicking is loopy and without penetration, he has taken 5 contested marks in 80 games, he doesn't tackle, hardly kicks goals, only finds an adequate amount of footy. Smart enough, runs all day and has genuine speed but Harro is right, absolutely carried by Hawthorns.
Sounds like a Fremantle recruiters dream

Yeah but that's the thing, even though some of those EPL teams are having purple patches right now and the comp looks fairly even (probably due to the smaller clubs developing their own top line talent compared with having the stupendous amounts of cash to throw around like the 'big' clubs) but we all know it won't last long because as soon as a smaller club develops a top line player(s) it's only a matter of time before the big boys wave that big wad of cash to make them jump ship.

This means the smaller club gets a gaping hole(s) in their team and can't compete with the cashed up sides to replace that player with another top liner of equal value and thus start the quick slide down the ladder.

It's a vicious cycle that is being emulated right now in the AFL, as GWS have so many first round picks (24 the last I heard.. yes 24..) that if any team wants to trade for them they will have to give up a first rounder to satisfy the trade. All bar some dickhead recruiting with their 1st round picks it's hard to see why this won't keep GWS strong forever..

Word on the street is * will swap pick 1 for pick 5 and 10 from the Gold Coast, apparently the points gained are better for them. How on what planet could you swap two top ten picks for one and be better off?

Talk is that then nobody can take their academy selection with pick one and they don't have to use as many points. No gaurantee a club would select him with pick one but it rules it out.

They'll also get more 1st round picks from Prestia and Omera

The whole thing is a stuff up.

Which is why it's better to finish down the bottom now and then rather than to cruise along mid range and have to take pot luck on your 12 - 25 range after all the compo etc get done...
Finish top and attract some very good players ala Hawks or draft them in with a bottom dweller mentality or be gifted them by the afl in pursuit of tv revenue in non afl States..

Who would of thought the AFL in all their wisdom would **** shit up and then make decisions on the fly. Just doesnt seem plausible, i mean they place the integrity of the game on the highest of pedestals and usually plan the simplest of moves years in advance. Entering 2 teams into the competition within a few years and giving them the cream of the crop year after year and the rest of the comp scraps shouldnt impact on wins/losses surely??

This Luke Ryan fella that's been invited to the combine any value as a mature ager? Help us bridge the gap as a ready to holiday replacement for one of our retirees/delistings?

I ask this with absolutely no info, other than him being the only vfl player invited to the combine
