TY VICKERY could become a Hawthorn player as early as Friday, with the Richmond forward agreeing to a three-year deal.

The restricted free agent had attracted interest from an interstate and Melbourne-based club, but is determined to get to the Hawks after a positive meeting with coach Alastair Clarkson.

Vickery’s departure will net the Tigers either a second-round pick (currently No.25) or end of second round (No.37) pick as compensation, depending on his new contract with Hawthorn.

As it stands, Richmond doesn’t have a second-round selection after trading it last year to Gold Coast as part of the Tigers’ manouvering to secure Chris Yarran from Carlton.

But under free agency rules, Richmond’s compensation pick for Vickery could come after what its second round pick would have been — No.24.

If Richmond matched Hawthorn’s three-year deal for Vickery, he would have to either stay at Punt Rd or take his chances of getting to Hawthorn in the draft.

The much-maligned big man, the No.8 pick in the 2008 national draft, simply feels he has reached the end of the line at Punt Rd after a turbulent 2016 season.

Hawthorn has told Vickery that while he needs to work on his weaknesses, the side can also play to his strengths.

It is understood Vickery will spend more time in the ruck under Clarkson and divide his time between midfield and the forward line.

The 26-year-old was dropped twice this year and overlooked by coach Damien Hardwick in the final fortnight for fringe key position pair Todd Elton and Callum Moore.

Hardwick had maintained Vickery was “firmly in my best 25”.

“He’s a really important player to our footy club ... make no mistake,” Hardwick said after the Round 22 loss to St Kilda.

Hawthorn, who have become masters at recruiting established rival talent in recent years, weren’t as efficient up forward in the wake of David Hale’s retirement, Jarryd Roughead’s absence and the late-season knee injury to Jonathon Ceglar further highlighted the need for another versatile big man.

Oh my God.
Anyone reading this would think they we don't allow players to play to their strengths or that our side does not play to players strengths.
That is just amazing.
To not using a players strengths enough or the team not playing to players strengths would just be dumb.
Never heard of such fanciful stuff!

I think we should be targeting Steele.

3rd year mid on the cusp of breaking into the deepest midfield in the AFL. He'll play every game for us and within 2 years will be one of the best big bodied mids in the AFL.

He also has 10+ years left in his career. I'd also look at getting Barrett in that same deal to bolster our depth.

Trades

2017 first for Steele, Barrett and GWS 2017 first

Lennon (directly or indirectly) + Pick 6 for Prestia + Pick 14 (Hawthorn) + Pick 40ish

Vickery Compo (pick 25, please football God)

Trade pick Conca for Nankervis

Leaves us with picks 14, 25, 40, 42, 60

In: Steele, Barrett, Prestia, Nankervis, Picks 14, 25, 40, 42, 60

Out: Vickery, Conca, Lennon, McBean, McKenzie, Chaplin, A.Moore, Butler, use 40th spot instead of upgrading rookie.

Upgrade Short for Morris. If Yarran doesn't return upgrade another player.

Team

B: Grimes, Astbury, Vlastuin
HB: Markov, Rance, Houli
C: McIntosh, Cotchin, B.Ellis
HF: Deledio, Griffiths, C.Ellis
F: Rioli, Riewoldt, Lloyd
R: Hampson, Martin, Prestia
Int: Steele, Miles, S.Edwards, Grigg

VFL

B: Morris, Chol, Batchelor
HB: Short, Draftee 1, Broad
C: Menadue, Townsend, Drummond
HF: Castagna, Moore, Draftee 2
F: Yarran*, Elton, Draftee 3
R: Nankervis, Barrett, Lambert
Int: Soldo/Maric, Draftee 4, Draftee 5, Hunt

*Yarran likely to be replaced with VFL/AFL player.

Draftee 1 - KPD
Draftee 2 - Half forward/midfielder
Draftee 3 - KPF
Draftee 4 - Genuine midfielder
Draftee 5 - Genuine midfielder

Best 22 looks good with no likely retirements at seasons end.

VFL side has at least half a dozen young players pushing best 22. The older players Morris, Lambert, Batchelor, Hunt, Townsend, Elton and Broad are all out of contract at the end of 2017 and therefore are playing for their careers and make it easy for us to repeat a similar recruiting process in 2017. By 2018 we should be pushing top 4 and have 30 capable players.

Why am i not very excited about this Hartlett thing !!

If we trade a first rounder for a 26 year old Hamish Hartlett we have learnt literally nothing and might as well blow the place up.
It's probably because i am over tired but this cracked me up, we made a mistake, perhaps we are learning nothing so lets blow this place up!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.......................................

Fairly simplistic I would have thought , what else , kick it longer and play in front more often ?
That is honestly as simplistic as it is. If you ask a coach in today's footy they will tell you exactly that.
Every contest across the ground you have to outnumber the opposition. Obviously impossible to do it every time but if you are outnumbered say 60% of the game you will get killed and when you are you have nowhere to go hence going backwards and sideways. The premiers are unbelievable at it. They not only outnumber the opposition and more so as game goes on but move it so quickly when the numbers are even or they have the one up. We are indecisive and slow.
Why would a coach instruct a team to go backwards? Or to second guess and panic? Answer- they don't.

That's because ESP in the first half of the season, we had too many players who wouldn't chase, break lines, or pressure.

The number of times our midfielders would either be in a light jog or stationary was baffling

That's exactly right. They were killing us and killing the coach.
Not here to make excuses for the coach he's got a lot of work to do too but those blokes hung the team out to dry.
If anyone wanted to know why Ben Lennon is on the outer that'd be why. He is either lazy, selfish, can't run or doesn't listen. He's not alone but he's a good example and a complete liability.
Vickery constantly leaving us outnumbered by being out of play from lack of run. We all love Miles but he couldn't keep up. Recruited Townsend for a bit of hardness but can't keep up. Corey Ellis can't keep up. Some of these blokes need to have huge pre seasons. Cotchin spent half his time being smashed by the opposition so was chasing tail after picking himself of the ground.
Then everyone wants to have a go at a bloke like Brandon Ellis who does what he's expected to do but has no numbers in support so has nowhere to go, so backwards we go and round and round with the hard running opposition hemming us in. Eventually our own hard running players were blowing up too due to having to do too much.
Very hard to watch it as you say there is a reason it happens and it's most definitely not instructions.
