Given pick 3 is unlikely to be used to be used for academy selections this is more like:

Pick 3 and 3rd round (+20% of 3rd rounder) = 2700
Pick 8 and 17 + 20% (as GWS would likely use these picks on academy players) = 3091

So GWS are losing McCarthy and points worth about pick 42.
Plus they need points this year to secure their academy talent.
Yes, I agree with this. I was just going on what's in front of me, and not trying to predict when the bids will come in. You are quite right though, it's unlikely Ess/Bris would bid on a GWS player at 1 or 2.

Non Academy clubs don't get the 20%, so it doesn't apply to them. Only Academy clubs.
I think you missed the point here.
If they get picks 3 & ? they can use this for academy selections - hence the discount.
However, the picks they trade out (8 & 17) HAD the discount component attached to it - hence the fact that this needs to be added/included in any trade.

Not really sure why you would include a discount to a club that can't apply the discount, but I think were getting a bit off topic. I was just doing the calculations. Personally, It doesn't phase me. It's highly unlikely that the trade won't happen from here. Freo won't sell the farm, but it will be a reasonable offer given the uniqueness of the situation. It has probably been complicated a bit by Brad Hill also requesting to come to Freo and that they don't have a 2nd Rounder this year (at the moment), nevertheless, listening to the commentary on radio, it's likely to get done, but may take some time to sort through.

Would you/Frem go for a trade where you would trade pick 3 for both McCarthy & Hill?
I value McCarthy and feel this is what Freo need with Pav retiring.
Thoughts?

The club's been pretty consistent on the language surrounding keeping Pick 3, but you never know. Strange things happen around trade time.

If GWS trade out picks they would have got a discount on, for those it may not (e.g. pick 3), then they are forgoing the use of the discount. It would disadvantage them, rather than advantage them.

Sure. Pick 3 may also give them a crack at 'best available' before bids come in. It's swings and roundabouts. Anyway, I'm not going to worry about it too much, there's already talk of scrapping the discount as early as next year.

Jack Steele + Adam Tomlinson + GWS Pick 70 to NORTH (North will use pick 70 + 84 to move up the draft, qual over quant approach)

Pick 12 to GWS

They gotta cut down their list. Win win. Steele is a jet and would help balance north's midfield (assuming he is quick) and Tomlinson has been in and out due to form and injury over the last 24 months and they need to trim their list. He isn't THAT good BUT big KFP (193cm / 94kg) take time. Would work alongside Tarrant (and Firitto in his final season) and would allow us to add a 23 year old KFP whos been semi-developed. Hansen is there, but I don't know where he is at which is really frustrating.

Dion Prestia to North

Aaron Black, Aaron Mullet + Pick 66 to Gold Coast

Leaves north with pick 30, 70 and 84.

We ontrade 70 + 84 to Richmond for pick 61

Brad McKenzie is traded back home to south australia for pick in the late 50s.

North go to the draft with live picks, 30, 59 and 61 and grab what we need + Tomlinson, Prestia, Steele

Assumptions:

Retire: Petrie, Waite, Ray

Delist: Nahas, Tippett, Fordham

Who knows: Daw

1 year contract: Boomer, Dal Santo + Firitto

If Steele makes it clear he wants to play footy somewhere else, I'd do that deal.

They good oodles of talent and need to trim their list as they have 5 top 35 picks in the draft. It wont hurt them one bit.
That doesn't mean there will be freebies! Every other club will offer plenty more and rightly so.

A couple of trash picks late don't matter- GWS have thousands of points banked already.

You can't just cough up a bunch of spuds and a late pick for a gun in Prestia. That's what Essendon supporters do!

More chance of Petrie becoming PM than this junk.

Using picks 70 + 84 to move up will get you approximately pick 70, which you would already have.

But just saying, it's a terrible deal for GWS. Whilst I don't rate Tomlinson highly, his value is still pretty significant due to the contracted factor.
