If most of the others players re-sign with Essendon then I highly doubt the AFL would step in to block Hibberd from leaving as a delisted free agent -especially if he wanted to come to a club at Melbourne who received nothing in compo for not having Melksham available.

Essendon whinging about us speaking to Hibberd, apparently its outside the rules of the game.....you know because Essendon play by the rules

That was pre-suspensions. The DFA clause is there but Essendon could fight it. I suspect that the MFC will say:

"Here's a 2nd rounder for Hibberd. We know it's slight unders but we gave you a second for Melksham. Take it and we don't push the DFA clause."

I suspect the Dons take it and run. They still need to rebuild, the suspended 12 won't repair their shit forward line or their lack of grunt. I expect them to try to pillage draft picks again.

I think the above also keeps us out of the Hurley shitfight that is going to happen once Hawthorn/GWS/North decide to throw the kitchen sink at him.

Also our CEO is on record saying we won't stepping in the way of anyone that wants to leave!

I think a second is fine. Ideally I think a pick 19 or so is worth his output, but you guys did us a solid last year with melksham. I think it'll be done quickly if he did choose to leave.

He's a suspended player, not a listed one. Essendon can't talk to him either :P

Dons weren't in a bargaining position last year either and Disco Didoro still dragged every trade out for as long as he could.

Melksham was the first or second trade done last year.

Dodo didn't drag out the Carlisle trade, St.Kilda did by the petulance of Ameet Baines wanting a top quality KPP for peanuts that was forced to mediation by the Saints unwillingness to part with there first.

What do you know, we got what we were asking for the whole time. Fair trade.

It's so much harder than the BF group think makes it out to be.

Will need to go to a grievance tribunal, then a whole bunch of other BS hence our willingness to part ways fairly with any player that wants to leave.

"DFA clause" is BS made up by BF and the dumber end of footy media. FFS - since when are specific employment contract clauses of individuals known to all Bigfooty posters?

A player could approach Essendon seeking to be released from contract, and I suspect under the circumstances EFC would assist the player to be traded where he wants, but it would be a trade, not a freebie.

Theoretically an EFC player could go to court seeking termination from their contract (on the basis of a breach of condition of the contract, evidence being the convictions of an unsafe workplace) but that would take a player that wanted to screw over EFC plus many former teammates, and could take some time. The player would risk the disapproval of the AFL, who are well capable of making life a misery if they're of a mind to do so. More importantly, the above scenario would get a player to the draft - not to a chosen club.

If Hibberd wants to leave he will be traded.

No, it isn't. It hasn't been tested (hence the grievance tribunal Yoda mentioned) but the AFLPA suggested that players could file for contract termination based on Essendon breaching their duty of care to the players.

That isn't a 'clause' - that's a right afforded to any party of any contract. And that's exactly what I said anyway. And termination of contract does not automatically produce a pathway to DFA, it just takes the player to the draft.

Edit: apologies Striker. I'm coincidently having beers with a sports lawyer at this moment and he said that - at least on the basis of what the AFL have announced to date about this specific scenario - you're probably right and a grievance tribunal win would make a player a DFA.

So I'm going to have another drink where I will toast your wisdom.

You shouldn't drink before midday.

Means our half backline next year will be hibberd and Melksham
You'd have to say that spells the end for Grimes
Also I wonder if that means Hunt will play more in the midfield

It would be interesting to see what that would do to our team.

B: Hunt TMac Jetta
HB: Hibberd Frost Melksham
C: Salem Viney Brayshaw
HF: Petracca Hogan Watts
F: Kent Dawes Garlett
R: Gawn Jones Vince
Int: Tyson Kennedy Bugg Lumumba

Emg: Oliver, Trengove, Weid, Harmes, VDB, ANB, OMac, Spencer, Stretch, Wagner

Pretty good depth - I don't want to get ahead of myself but that looks close to a solid finals team.

Melksham and Hibberd adds some solid pace and skill to our team and frees Salem up to the midfield/forward flank.

Have met some people and I'm certain that the DFA won't be tested due to pressure from the AFL

Mate I'm not calling you a liar, but can't see Canada as being an easy place to meet people who are involved with the AFL.

It would be interesting to see what that would do to our team.

My dream backline

FB: Jetta Hurley Frost
HB: Hibberd McDonald Melksham

Hunt on the wing

If we trade Spencer or Mitch White I'll be very disappointed. White has been killing it all year but no opportunity. If he's rookie listed put Salem or H on the LTI. He needs a chance to show what he's got. And the Muss kicked 4 goals, had 17 possessions and had 53 hit outs last week. Surely you get a senior game after a performance like that.

And who does Spencer replace? He's certainly not replacing Gawn.

I agree. Jake the Snake is a backup ruckman...plus didn't he extend by another year?

So, Jesse on telly now. Contract talks delayed until (apparently) early next year. Not good. Hoped for news sooner after season end.

However, says that if the group can be kept together, the future looks very promising. Good.

Overall good. Ish. I think.
