Rookie upgrades count as live picks. You use your picks for them.

Ah didn't realise that. Not used to going into a draft in that sort of position!

I know what you mean. It's going to become more common with future trading you'd think. It also depends on what you want to do. For example, if you don't mind the draft's back-end talent, you may be willing to trust in your recruiter to pluck the best couple of kids from the tail of the draft (as Geelong did with Stephen Wells last year).

That's true. Geelong obviously had a plan to top up with existing talent then go late in the draft - and it wasn't Moneyball because they got quality, not the undervalued-but-ultimately-crap players that Neeld got us (generally speaking, I mean Pedersen is probably the only exception).

The bonus with their strategy, other than knowing who you're getting when trading the high picks, is that it becomes easier to cut the drafted players if they don't make an impact in the first 2 years. If you draft a player with a higher (top 20) pick, and they turn out to be a dud, they don't linger on your list past their use by date. No-one gives a shit if you cut someone that you brought in with pick 72.

With us having such a young list, it makes it harder to move on players until they've been given a reasonable go. Hence my comment on the last page about not expecting to see us too active, unless someone makes an offer we can't refuse or a player really wants out.

Danger and Henderson are quality, but Scooter won't get a game even when fit and Smith is already turning into what he was at GC. The Cats lack young midfield talent and don't have draft picks to work with.

I know right!

Striker475 I think the rules are that we have to use 3 live picks?

This sounds crazy but I reckon a team that might put a bit of value on Dawes is Hawthorn. If Roughhead can't come back then he'd be cheap insurance in case one of their existing forwards suffers a long term injury (I realise Dawes aint a tenth of the player but if he's cheap then could be a option to plug a hole ala Spangher). Problem is his currency is pretty low so might only get us something in the 50's.

I actually agree. Still dont think wed get alot for him though.

Yep, its an all or nothing strategy that became their best option with Danger on his way. Go all out at bringing in some good players, and reverse the downward spiral.

They were already on their way to a pretty bad bottoming out due to being up for just so long, there isn't enough quality kids there, as evidenced by how poor they are when Danger and Selwood are quiet/shutdown. When they do decline, it'll be a bad one.

It'll be interesting when we play them... Vince on Danger again and Viney on Selwood :)

Was having that exact conversation the other day. If it comes down to Round 23 for us to make the finals, I'll be surprisingly confident given we've got two proven match ups for DangerWood. I think there is sufficient evidence to suggest that we can still play well with Vince and Viney not dominating, whereas without Danger and Selwood, they can't.

Exactly, would be on the soldies or the rest of our little dog pack.. Jones Bugg etc to better Guthrie and co which I think we are capable of.

One of my best mates is a mad cats fan (Used to post on here a lot) and he reckons they're in transition and will challenge in 17-18, but I think they've got until the end of 2018 to challenge or they'll go off a cliff. Guys like Taylor Enright and Lonergan aren't going to be there forever and I'm not sure if they have much coming through.

Anyway back to trades, who should we target as an outside runner? I find it very ironic that although I'd never take him back and he got us Hogan, Scully is the perfect type of player for us (Although we need an elite kicker as well).

Josh Kelly.. Yes please

I dont think we are getting Kelly or Gaff without giving up the world. I dont think we have the world to give either.

Realistically....

Jordan Murdoch is a weird one for the Cats. Some games he looks a million bucks, other games he looks horrible. In and out of the team a lot this year. Perhaps we target someone like this who cant get a regular gig but has the potential to break out and become a very good player. Not sure of his contract status though.

JKH just started following Carlton, maybe he is on his way at the end of the year?

Well he's not even remotely near getting a game so I think he's just about done.

JKH needs to be played as an inside midfielder where he might be able to make it as an afl player
Won't be at melbourne though
Has good hands in tight and a decent side step
If Carlton want him I wouldn't expect too much for him obviously

A friend told me Michael Hibberd to the Dees is a done deal (has a friend with contact with the Hibberd family. So yes, it's the most reliable type of source - a friend of a friend...)
I mainly give his news some weight after Roos confirmed him as a potential target as well the rumour he was seen meeting with Melksham, McCartney and Goody.

I don't know what - if anything - we will have to give up for him. A second round pick perhaps.

That's a huge get if true, Hibberd is a really good backman.

You realise we would be dealing with Essendon right?
