Anyway. It hurts me to say it but would Colin Garland have any value for any other clubs? Ie are there any teams where'd he'd get a regular senior spot?

Its hard to make an argument for him when we have an extremely inexperienced backline and he can't get one for us
Brisbane and Carlton maybe?
Geelong move the ball slowly from defence so his kicking wouldn't be a huge issue..

I wouldn't take a 4th for Garland. 2nd at least. Don't care he isn't getting a game for us, anybody who wants him is specifically trading for an experienced 2nd/3rd tall defender and they don't grow on trees...

That's ridiculous, you can't ask for a second rounder for a bloke playing reserves
Travis Cloke is lucky to get that and Garland would be rightfully livid if a club offered him a chance and we ****ed it being stubborn
If we get a 3rd rounder I'd be stoked

That is how Essendon approach trade week.

You can ask for whatever you want, especially if the club you're trading with are desperate to fill a need. My opinion is a 2nd would be fair if it was a straight swap for a draft pick. If we were able to attract a Ruck/Fwd in a straight swap of a good calibre, sure.

But I don't want to have no depth in defence if (touch wood) TMac, OMac or Frost go down with a season ender and we've traded a bloke (who has played nearly 150 games, was a runner up in the B & F three years ago and rejected rival overtures to re-sign a 3 year deal with us this year) for a 4th rounder.

What he did 3 years ago means 3/5ths of **** all, on that logic Cloke is worth 2 first rounders still
No club is gonna be desperate to sign a reserves 3rd tall defender who isn't even playing that well down there. At his stage of his career he will be lucky to even find another club
We wouldn't even get Ty Vickery in a straight trade for him

If we bring in Hibberd he is capable of playing on the third tall, the club may well keep him as depth but that's what he is.. depth
Jeremy Howe went for a second last year and he had way more value and marketing ability

All depends a bit on Col - I would keep him for depth at least until end of contract, but if someone wants him and he would like to go there rather than be a Casey regular, I think we owe it to him to try and help facilitate that. I would be shocked if we netted anything above a third rounder though, and we might not get anything of use at all.

Still, one of the factors that can potentially make you a "destination" is that players will consider is how fairly and reasonably you deal with individual players. If it gets around that you are obstructive with accommodating reasonable requests etc. it can be a disincentive. Sounds crazy but its a very closed world, and amongst players and managers this sort of information gets around fast. Getting a bad reputation on playing hardball with a guy who has been a pretty decent contributor to Melbourne like Col would be counter-productive. So even if you net nothing from releasing Colin to go play some games for, say, Brisbane, you can make some general gains in goodwill and so forth.

I have no bad will for Garland, Trenners, Grimes, Dunn or any of our senior reserves... if a club was willing to play any of them in the AFL next season we would owe it to them to listen ( grimes obv a free agent )

I've been sitting on this for a while, now is as good as time as any to pass it on. If you look back through my posts you'll see that I don't normally post rumours, I used to have a couple of excellent sources in the club but they've since long gone however I still have some connections in the industry who on a very rare occasion will pass something on. So this hasn't come from the MFC.
What I was told is that Ollie Wines is not happy at Port. I don't know what he's said in public but privately I know that he's had a couple of chats with Viney snr about it. We all know how close he was with the family before getting drafted, that hasn't changed.
What he's struggling with though is his loyalty to the club who drafted him. He wants to be loyal to Port but he's worried that he won't have any success with them.
There were no suggestions of wanting a trade or anything like that, his loyalty right now is too strong to Port however this might get tested if Port continue to flounder.
Very interesting though

I don't even rate wines that highly I think he's already hit his ceiling
He doesn't look as good as he looked like he would look, does he?

I would actually give him the benefit of the doubt on this one though. He appears to have plateau'd a bit the last 18 months, but I think a bit of that is the general fall-apart of Port. Plus the usual struggle players have in meeting the hype when they showed star quality in their first year. He's still very young, and I think there is some more improvement to be had.

When he agreed his last contract, it was only for two years? Is that right? So I guess end of next year is when he gets to really think on his opportunities?

Thing is us fans tend to overrate seasons of kids who come in physically developed and then get shocked when they dont improve in our eyes
Wines came into the league bigger than most AFL players who have played for a decade, he doesnt have any developing physically to do so he is closer to the finished product than most. Thats not to say he isnt a gun clearance player but when your inside game is your strength and your already strong enough to do that at 18, then realistically how much can you really improve?

Err, no to Wines, ok, calm down peeps, lets not get stupid now, if Ollie Wines wanted to come to Melbourne i think we could find room, he would easily be in our best 22.

Its like saying before this year, where would Viney improve? Gun inside mid at under age level, people suggested he had a lower ceiling than most also, but his improvement has gone through the roof this year despite still not being able to kick.

We would have to pay next years first.. then possibly more. Do we really need another slow inside midfielder?? If we did get him that would mean Petracca plays as a permanent forward IMO because we would have too many midfield types ( Viney/Tyson/Jones/Wines/Oliver* ) who can only play in the centre square

* get the feeling Oliver could play forward one day

EDIT- actually a better way to canvass that question would be to ask this, If he decides to come back to Victoria surely almost every victorian club would be offering him a contract, and a few like Richmond could offer him a big one.. Im not convinced he is better than Viney and Tyson or will be better than Oliver or Brayshaw so he would be taking a huge pay cut

Is he really that slow? I would have considered Viney "slow" until this year, i think he could get fitter, the longer you can go the faster you look. Dylan Shiel is another player i would have considered "slow" early days, i dont actually think he is super quick or anything now, he does seem to have improved his speed, but i think he just runs harder for longer than most, similar to Viney, if you could turn Wines into such a athlete you would have a dead set beast.

Relax. Leave the complex money and picks shit to the complex money and picks shit people (I mean at the club - not Dez! negotiations in drafts and trades).

I'm with A11. Would defs be interested. Imagine a midfield with two Viney-style wreaking balls. I would be more interested in this scenario then, for example, the Prestia idea.

Fair enough, I normally agree with most if not all things A11 says in regards to players but im not sure we really need another inside midfielder when we have Trenners and ANB playing reserves footy
Not even sure if Irony is correct in this situation but how ****ing funny would it be if Toumpas was at Port at Wines requested a trade to Melbourne and we somehow paid less than pick 5

Would we consider Cloke an upgrade on Pedo or Dawes? He can't ruck, so doesn't solve that problem, but I personally like the Wattsy experiment anyways. Not sure I would want him, but wondering what others think... I would probably prefer him over Vickery, considering we wouldn't have to give/pay as much
Not a chance!

Never go full Cloke!!
