There really isn't a lot of trade talent on the market worth looking at.

Besides Hibberd I don't mind going through the draft, even if we have some later picks. We've made something out of OMac and Hunt, I'll back the recruiters in to find some diamonds in the rough.

This article has us looking for tall defensive reinforcement and links us with Kaiden Brand. Thoughts?

Also, back to Hibberd and would you be willing to offer Essendon next year's 2nd and this year's 3rd in exchange for this year's 4th and Hibberd? Just so we keep a 2nd this year, and give them a bit of extra change to say thanks.

That's not a bad idea at all.

Mind you, our second could be a little higher next year, so the bombers might be wary of that.

Yeah when you look at the value the dogs and swans have found in recent drafts it does make you question why we keep trading out picks all the time

Daniel, Johanissen, Dahlhaus, Redpath, Wood, Smith, Fletcher Roberts, Hamling, Dixon, Biggs, Cordy, McLean .. some really low picks and rookies their
Plus the Swans have Paply, Lloyd, Rampe, Smith, Jack, Kennedy, Mitchell, Mcglynn, Naismith, Parker, Hewett, Richards who weren't high picks either

If we really want Hibberd though (and I think we do) we probably can't try and drive too hard a bargain. Didn't he come out and say something like 'if it can't get done, I'm happy enough to stay at Essendon.'

Was a weird thing to say, for a guy who wants out.

Well for a while it was because we didn't really back our own development. Will be interesting to see if we think the worm has turned now.

We need this guy in the football department

Kennedy, McGlynn, T.Richards, Biggs and Hamling were all traded in. We're hardly trading out a whole bunch of picks. Just Melksham and now Hibberd.

Don't think either are a key need for us. Brand is an OK key defender but isn't great with kicking (the two Macs and Frost aren't great either, so we need blokes who can kick down back).

Clark is a real battler in the ruck and is absolutely hopeless as a forward. I agree we need back-up for Gawn but I think we need someone who can play as a forward effectively too.

Fair calls.

I don't know where we'll find a better tall defender than Brand though. Not this year, anyway.

The Clarke thing I was thinking might just be sensible, given we are surely going to pick up a free agent or 2 so we don't have to use a seventh and eighth round draft pick.

We could certainly do with another ruck on our list for a year or 2, even if he is third in line to Gawn and Spencer. Just some short-term security is what I was thinking.

X.richards, Hamling and Biggs were basically picked up as delisted players .. Biggs went for a 1 pick downgrade or something
Kennedy and Mcglynn were offloaded for nothing
If that's your only argument my point stands

Swans didn't trade for Buddy or Tippett but gave up plenty to fit them in the cap.

Bulldogs gave up plenty to get Tom Boyd.

Given we had the youngest team on the park for most of the year, I can't see where you're coming from. You make it sound like we're Richmond.

We traded 23 into Frost, ANB and O. McDonald. We picked up Michie and Newton for chips.

I just don't think you can isolate once example of a successful side and suggest that what has been a pretty good policy for us is no good.

Melksham is our only trade I don't understand.

Which could well be a sensational deal, up until now I havent had a problem with our trading efforts at all and have fully supported us trading out lower picks because our development was horrific to say the least.. lets just say im hoping we can start developing AAs off the rookie list like the succesful sides

There's a thread in the scandals/rumours board that we're in to Tom Cutler from Brisbane. Don't bother asking about source etc. Who knows?
No idea how we get him over the line, unless it's part of some Dunn trade.

From a Lions article at the start of 2016:
"Standing at 190cm tall and weighing 89kg, Cutler is a dynamic option in the Lions defence. In 2015 Cutler made big strides in his development, often used for his run off half back. He finished the Season having played 11 games and averaged 21 disposals."

Knowing what I do of Goodwin, he sounds like the kind of player he's after. How many running defenders can we bring in though?

Lions supporters in that thread wanted a 1st for him, which is utterly laughable, I'm actually a big fan after seeing him dominate a couple of NEAFL games, but no way is he worth a 1st, Dunn + 3rd is reasonable for mine

We've gone a fair way to shoring up our stoppage department, so with later picks, I can see us trying quite a few flankers and wingers who have pace over the next few years.

Sorry for the intrusion, but I think the issue is that you haven't seen him play any AFL games on top of those NEAFL games.

I would feel safe enough to put my house on any AFL recruiter valuing Cutler as a first-round pick purely based on potential and what he's shown so far. Have to add in the fact that he's contracted, too, which increases his trade value if he were to be (stupidly) put up for trade by the Lions.

As for Dunn, what do you guys believe he is worth?

A late second round draft pick from three years ago that has only just started to show glimpses of anything that is mildly AFL level is not worth a 1st round pick. The fact that most people you ask have never heard of him should suggest enough to say that he's miles from being worth a 1st.

As for Dunn, I've said multiple times that a player's value can vary from team to team, Dunn for us is depth, for Brisbane he's best 22 and the general your backline is screaming for. The trade I suggested has you coming out wel for minel, but if you don't like it, I suggest whinging about it on another team's board

I'd pay a first for Cutler - if Tom Rockliff was thrown in as steak knives...

Dunn is contracted, which makes his value higher (see what I did there).

Realistically the Lions' 4th will probably get the job done, considering he's 29 and not best 22. But I'd be unhappy with that result, given he's been at the club longer than any other player and in different circumstances should have cleared 200 games with us.
