There was quite a bit of dissension down at the BSO on Saturday. The Tramconductors, that bunch of generally affable people, were having a real ‘barney’ that has lasted several weeks. It’s all Aiden Lambert’s fault. Some had him BOG three weeks ago, a decision that I agreed with. Some had him BOG last week, a decision I do not agree with. Some had him BOG this week, a decision that I do not agree with.

These arguments have the potential to get heated, especially as the calming influence, the peacemaker and generally all round good guy is departing OS for a month. So while I am away ( next three games) I want Aiden to get 35 disposals and kick five goals each week so there will be no arguments.

The football coaching group, in their wisdom, gave the BOG on Saturday against Parkdale to young Max Davie who apparently set a club record in tackles and such acts. I acknowledge that we have no women in our coaching group so wisdom may be scarce. On a day like Saturday it was a grind so these sorts of thing become far more important. The Tramconductors describe Tommy B as a ‘defender’s defender’. I have a description of my selection for BOG on Saturday. He is a ‘midget’s ruckman’: Ross Borland, who set the game up in the second quarter.

My day started well as I manned the time clock for the Ressies for a few minutes until Susan arrived. I like being useful. Time keeping when you have time on is not a simple job. As I looked over the oval from the grand stand the city was hidden by misty rain that made the ground as slippery as an ice rink and the ball was as hard to grab as a cake of soap. Cohen remarked it looked like a game played up in the Dandenongs, an apt description.

We started the game well and we should have iced the game in the first quarter. We had seven scoring shots to two but they kicked two goals straight that kept them in the game. Jules and Roscoe rang onto ball that skidded over the pack, Jules going off the ground but Roscoe had a difficult angled shot under great pressure. He was probably lucky it was early on in the game. Those sorts of skills get difficult with tied bodies and a sodden ball.

Pav took a strong grab deep in our forward line showing Parkdale how it’s done. Parkdale players dropped bucket loads of marks all day. I lost count of how many times they would put their hands up to mark and allow the ball to slip through. When I played we were always instructed, on wet days, to change the angle of your hands so more of your palms would be directly behind the ball as it hit your hands. They put their hands up for marks with so little conviction that they reminded me of the statue of Silvester Stallones, playing Rocky, that I saw in Philadelphia. The statue would ‘clunk a few more grabs’ than Parkdale.

Greg Hesse, playing in the back pocket, kicked a goal in the first quarter. Dalts was all alone in the goal square as the kick slithered through. Dalts, who played a great game, wisely let the ball skid through. Ever since Dalts kicked all those behinds in a row a year or two ago, we don’t trust him.

The second quarter started out with our best kick Liga drilling a pass, on a kick out, to a Parkdale player who said thanks very much. For the next ten minutes the Parkdale forwards got on top by hard and aggressive leading. They got to within a point and we needed to answer.

Captains have to respond and Danny B bulldozed his way clear, gave to Dohers who waltzed around the Parkdale defenders. They did not land a finger on him. I am going to Vienna, Berlin and Budapest in the next few weeks and will go to some highbrow entertainment but I won’t see, or hear, a waltz as sweet as the Danny and Dohers combo. Liga, our best kick, then missed an easy shot but made amends a minute later. Liga’s kicking let him down a bit. He hit the post in the last quarter.

We got to five goals in front when the umpires paid a puzzling free to them, straight in front.

Half Time Scores 9 4 to 5 2

The second half was a slog for most on the ground; tired bodies, sore bodies and awful conditions. Once again they scored the last goal of the quarter in the third quarter. One thing that mystified me was Rory’s long absences from the ground in this quarter. I assume something was wrong.

We hit the post three times in the second half, which probably reduced the margin a few points. Danny B was simply wonderful, throwing himself in in every contest. The only player with a ‘dry’ ball was Aiden Lambert and his two goals in this half were simply out of this world, or this grade. The final margin flattered Parkdale a bit as did the selection of Max as BOG (and Greenie in the best players). Both were good but any of Matty K, Rory or Liga individually would have got more possessions than both of them put together.

Our team over the last few weeks reminds me of a merry go round with horses bobbing up and down as they go around. On Saturday Aiden had a great second half, Rosco and Liga had a great first half’s, but every Fitzroy player bobbed up when it was his turn and that’s why we are in the four.

I will finish by taking myself to task. I have said that we have only attracted one ‘A Grader’ in the last few years: Danny B, but the last few weeks have shown that Liga and Aiden may be our next “A Graders’. If these two continue in the same grade I predict:

Two A Grader’s do not a B Grade side make.

Beware; the Roys are on their way to A grade.
