Historically I think that is quite good against GCS especially considering Hawks fall down the ladder this year.
Probably would have been sub 10k had they elected to stage this in Launie.

Similar number to the Sunday Twilight game against the Eagles (28,997) but down on the Rd 2 game against the Crows (37,420) in the Saturday afternoon slot (which was way down on the clubs absolute peak in 2016 - 45,761)

It's still way to early to tell but perhaps, just maybe the three-peat has grown Hawthorn's hanger-oners.

The last time Hawthorn hosted a smaller non Vic club (non Adelaide, West Coast, Sydney or Brisbane) at the MCG in a similar ladder position was Rd 10 2010

Hawks (4-6) v Port Adelaide (5-5) 21,287

Pre Clarkson these sort of games always drew low 20,000s even in the finals years of 2000/01

Hawthorn's attendances in Melbourne have definitely been more durable then it's numbers in Tassie.

Ironically whilst their numbers swelled during the three peat and bid for four in a row the numbers in Tassie have been in decline since the height of 2006/09

Still pretty early days though. The Lions numbers after the three in a row stayed pretty stable until they self destructed under the Voss / Leppa regime

Hawks have a much stronger supporter base from 10 years ago.

Probably won't be much different than tonight.
I predict 25-27K tonight. Saturday night at Ethihad is an unfavourable time slot if you were to compare to a sunny Saturday at the MCG as an example. Not very family friendly and many people go out on Saturday night.

For the recent Sunday arvo game V West Coast at Ethihad (36,400), most of the Bomber fans I know (friends / work colleagues) went to the game. Tonight most aren't due to 'going out' it other things on... It's quite a fine line.

We will see shortly but I have a feeling that this is the sort of game that would've drawn really well at the MCG today or tomorrow, but not tonight.

Good crowd today, I guess the legion of people desperately waiting for terrible crowds for the Hawks so they can slag them off will have to wait another couple of weeks.

Useless stat of the day: the biggest crowd in Melbourne and the 2nd biggest crowd overall GC have had a win in front of.

11,742 for Lions/Freo tonight, 2nd lowest crowd Gabba crowd ever.

The good news is that the Lions win should ensure the crowd not dropping off for the GWS game.

The crowd looks fair at Docklands maybe 30,000
I attended the first ever game at Docklands had a free ticket to the Medallion Club when Port and Essendon played in front of 43,000 it was a pretty one sided match with the Dons running out easy winners.

Shows how much polish has been wiped off Etihad as a venue since then.

The first year or two it got a hammering from the media with ticket stuff ups and lockouts and has struggled to lift its image from that time.
I always find it quite surprising how many people hate the place.
BTW there were no issues that night almost walked straight through so I dont know why they were not able to keep that up for other matches in the first year.

Often there is a lag in crowd drop-off after a period of success as Hawkk said. With a bottom four finish looking likely for Hawthorn this year the test will be to see how their crowds hold up next year.

Nevertheless a very solid crowd today, about 5,000 up on what I expected.

Great is an exaggeration. It's actually marginally worse than the average between the two at the venue (34,121).
I disagree. In the current climate where Ethihad is not 'going great', and Essendon coming off two losses, I thought it was excellent. The first game (43K) bumped the average and the other games over 40,000 I believe were when Essendon were a side in the top 8??Therefore, given these factors this was a very good attendance.

This year Vic derbies struggle to draw over 40,000 with many this year around 30,000. 34,000 involving the Power is a very good crowd.

Most dons fans took a 12 month hiatus, don't retire off the bombers crowds just yet, they have some decent ones still to come!
Tonight, just under for myself.
