I think that's slightly unrealistic.
If it reaches 50000 that is a huge result for the club who have never got 50000 to an interstate oppo.

Basing on 2013 and 2015 crowds of around 40000 vs Freo and and 45000 vs eagles I can't see it quite reaching 50000.

The hawks and Swans game was just a sensational turnout, the perfect storm and don't think there will be a number like that again for a long time.

50000 would be massive

If there's ever been an example of the MCG getting their prediction wrong it's this one... Surely it must draw over 50,000. The Swans will have 10-15K if their mob, it's the only MCG fixture this weekend, Tigers flying, sunny day, good time slot..

Notwithstanding Richmonds drawing history against interstate sides, anything under 50,000 in my view will be a disappointment. I think the MCG in this instance will be incorrect. It's a 50,000+ game for sure.

I think we are being a bit harsh that anything under 50000 is a disappointment. While we have 0 over 50K vs interstate opposition we only have 7 games in our history over 40K and I can remember at least 4 of those since 2013 or later.

Can we really honestly account for 10-15K of swans supporters being there ? That's as many as North got to a home game against the GC a few rounds ago essentially saying that Swans have a bigger following in Victoria than a Victorian team.

40000 would be really unfortunate
45000 would be about par, but to break the 50000 against an interstate team would be pretty awesome

Saturday's Gold Coast vs Carlton game looks likely to have a decent crowd. GC going for 3 wins in a row + Saturday night timeslot + no nrl in GC + many Carlton fans travelling up, especially after a good win last Sunday + already quite a few blues fans in QLD. Should be the highest crowd at Metricon for the year so far and exceed 16k.

I don't know if anyone has kept a table on it or something, but from memory alone, the MCG's estimates have generally been pretty accurate this year.
Is that the Nerd-Signal I see in the sky?

They started a little shakily but they've predicted 5 of the last 6 to within 1,400 people, which is a fair effort.

Overall, they are tending to overestimate slightly. In fairness, they did get caught with the weather a few times early on (Carl-Ess being the biggest example).

I keep saying this but people on here really underestimate the Swans Melbourne fanbase. They had a good 15K against us last year (the Sammy "Clutch" Lloyd game). Their South Melbourne heritage is still very strong. It's not unrealistic to suggest they can bring in as many as North to some games.

Sydney have only ever drawn over 60,000
4 times;

72,000 v Hawthorn 1999 last game at Waverley
69,000 v Essendon 1996 1st v 3rd at the end of the home and away season
65,000 v Collingwood 2013
62,000 v Essendon 1998

I would expect 50-55,000 for the tiges v swans game

Pretty sure at least another couple of times against Hawthorn as well in recent years.

Yep agree. If ever there's been a day for Richmond to draw over 50K this is it. There have been several home and away games at the MCG over 50,000 as well. Whilst the Vic club needs to be going well, Richmond is going well.

It should be in the range you nominated.

They should get it easily, if they can draw 40,000 plus against West Coast it's really not that much of a stretch to draw another 10,000 against the Swans

In 2008 Hawthorn drew 29,198 (Rd 14) against the Eagles on a Friday Night and 49,527 to a Sunday fixture against the Swans (Rd 15) the following week

Collingwood and Hawthorn have had plenty of 50,000 plus attendances against Sydney and Richmond have drawn similar numbers to games against the Lions and Eagles

I know it is on a much smaller scale, but for the Richmond home game at Etihad this year the club is making you log in register and choose you're seats for the game.

Super easy, took all of 3 mins and got to choose the seats that I wanted and means that any seats not utilised by members have the opportunity to be effectively resold considering in years past they would not of been.

This just shows is can be done and clubs like Essendon should of been onto this years ago, only way we are going to see 50000 plus crowds at Etihad again.

Essendon had a seat resale system for 3-4 years until this year. Only about 700 seat holders took advantage of the initiate each game so it was shelved.

The difference being for the tigers home game it is a compulsory system, and it you don't do it, you don't get you're seat, this means that everyone that does it, has full intentions of attending. Creating the possibility for 1000s of more seats to be open to the general public.
Not to mention on level 1 not up on level 3

This is a one off game against a small drawing opposition however

Much harder when you have seven games here

Also this isnt popular with members. They have acvepted it, but reaction on social media when this was announced was pretty pissed off

Short term pain, long term gain. Give it a year and it will be considered normal

Short term is seven times a year, including against high drawing local teams like hawthorn and geelong?

I pay roughly $1200 for my membership. The notion that this gives me no better access tp this game than someone paying a third of this is just wrong

It literally took 3 minutes this Morning,
If you were a home tenant it could be as easy as a yes or no text message.
It helps the club be able to sell more tickets and you do get better access as they are You're seats that you have first priority too.
Time too move with the times

No it doesnt, i got the message the same time as everyone

Again, fine for a one off

For a home ground, why would i pay $800 more for the exact same level of access?

Your plan optimizes attendences at the price of premium memberships

It will depend on the weather which ATM is forecast as showers and the Sat afternoon slot dosent seem as popular as in past times maybe too many people out shopping, sipping lattes and playing sport?.

Anything above 50,000 would be great

AFL

The AFL rated 4.17 million for Round 12, with 2.767 million on Free to air and 1.410 million on Foxfooty. All 7 games for the round were broadcast in at least one free to air market.

The highest rating AFL game on free to air television this round was the Queens Birthday clash between Collingwood and Melbourne which rated 704,000 - 557,000 in Metro markets and 147,000 in the regions. Thursday, Friday and Saturday night coverage all rated over 600,000.

Over on Fox, Foxfooty was rated the number 2 channel by ASTRA, falling behind Foxleague for the first time in 9 weeks and for the third time this season. The highest rating AFL game on Foxfooty was also the Queens Birthday clash with 264,000 viewers nationally, closely followed by the Blues v GWS match at 254,000.

For the season, the AFL ratings have topped 54 million (33 million FTA) with increases in all metro markets except Sydney and Perth. Sydney is perhaps reflecting the inconsistent performance of the Swans where the average is down -13% to 28,000 per match. Melbourne is up 6% to 297,000 per match, being a beneficiary of dropping low rating Saturday afternoon coverage. Brisbane is in something of a renaissance, up 26% to 27,000 per game. Adelaides ratings are up with their teams, increasing 20% to 117,000 per game, while in Perth the trials of Fremantle are proving detrimental to audiences, down -4% to 94,000 per match. Overall the metro audiences are up 14% to 294,000 per game on the same time in 2016.

Regional audiences are harder to quantify due to inconsistent data reporting prior to this year, however we believe that AFL regional ratings are up around 8% based on estimates used for 2016.

Over on Pay TV, the average audience is up 1% to 196,000. Sydney audiences rating an average of 16,000, Melbourne 86,000, Brisbane 13,000, Adelaide 21,000 and Perth 28,000. Metro Audiences rate an average of 164,000, while regionals average 43,000.

I don't mind it if the system actually works properly like it did for you. I'm a reserved seat member and mine is a no go at the moment - I log in and can't see any option to register for a seat.
