For all the people worried about us trading away our 2018 draft picks, I came across this article today

http://www.afc.com.au/news/2016-05-09/bumper-2017-draft-looms

May 9, 2016 12:42 PM

Clubs may be more reluctant to trade future draft selections this year with a bumper crop of prospects expected to be available in 2017.

Recruiters have been excited about next year's NAB AFL Draft pool since the under-16 carnival last year, when a mix of talls, midfielders and smaller types shone across both divisions.

NAB AFL Academy coach Brenton Sanderson, who recently led the level one academy squad of 2017 hopefuls on a tour of New Zealand, said clubs were already looking forward to next year's draft.

"This is a really exciting young group, and the water cooler talk at the moment around here is that this is a very strong draft. The 2017 draft looks to be a very strong draft," Sanderson told AFL.com.au's Road to the Draftpodcast.

"I've seen so much great young talent in this group already. This year's draft coming up looks to be full of great midfielders, and the 2017 draft there's some fantastic talls and a good couple of ruckman in there as well.

"I don't want to jump too early, but it (the 2017 crop) looks to be a really strong group."

I'm not joking when I say that I'm pretty sure every single year I've been following the draft has predicted the next year to be a 'superdraft'

You're spot on. Next year is always the best draft.

I think the problem is with the word "strong". Does it mean deep? Does it mean high quality? Does it mean high quality at the top? And then similarly with "weak" in reverse?

This year's draft looks great at the top end if you want a midfielder. This year has some top end big bodies, whereas last year was perhaps more speedy and skilful smalls. Next year we'll again see some great top end talent but probably more KPFs and small forward types rather than mids. I think once you get past the first round it moves around so much from a year or more out that any analysis of it's strength is a bit meaningless. However, at least in WA, the bottom agers have been very strong at Colts level - so if Vic and SA are similar I'd say that's a sign the quality might go deeper than normal next year. But a lot can change between now and then.

I like what we've done by keeping our future 1st. Post next year's u18s we can get a better sense of what's available and where, and then buy back into the draft accordingly.

I think the "super draft" just comes from the top end talent. There do look to be some exceptional players. That is why I wanted us to hold our 2018 1st but didn't care about trading the rest.

The wings are outside. It's the inside speed that we lack, as mentioned earlier. That's why we keep trying SHill in there but he keeps getting injured. Also Sonny. None of our true inside mids have good breakaway pace. If they don't win it at the stoppages while on the move at pace or can't get a clean possession outside we're screwed. The amount of times Fyfe, Neale and co were left watching the opposition run it out of a stoppage was concerning this year.
I would refer to that as burst from the stoppage or explosiveness (ala Judd/Danger/Dusty) rather than inside speed. And yes I agree with your observation on us.

As a counter point though, SYDNEY would consistently be the best inside mid team, but I don’t think Kennedy, Hannebury, Parker, Heaney, Jack and co are elite there. There may be more than one way to skin the cat?

Reckon there is 4 or 5 I would grab next year before any this year....Rankine, Lukosioius (not sure of spelling), Hill, King twins etc.
That's what was said about Fogarty, Rayner, Ballenden, Hayes, O'Brien and Brander (GWS Academy) last year compared to the year before.

no, we wish him a happy and succesful career in the VFL
I actually though yesterday he was exactly what West Coast needed. Except the bit where he wants to go home.

And Adelaide as well don't have fast breaking contested mids and they killed us and many other teams.

I still believe height/size is an issue (though it is almost impossible that we will draft more undersized mids this time around) around the ground, but as Taylor said too many guys rushing in blindly will leave free players open in space and that had been the problem when we have been smashed in the midfield. This comes from inexperience and discipline as much as anything.

With little difference between Davies-Uniacke and Dow in terms of playing ability our recruiters may go for which ever player was more impressive at their meeting. Either of those two with pick 2 then Fogarty at 5 would be a good result IMO.

I know this was sarcasm but D Fog has actually shown some of his best work down as an intercept and rebounding defender...
He also did the kicking out from a point score at times for SA. It doesnt show up in his 2017 highlights, but most of the talent scout reports describe him as an elite kick and probably the best kick in the draft in terms of accurate long kicking.

Mark Duffield reported on Saturday sports(early September) talk that APearce will be ready to do a full pre season. You seem to be on the money.
He is also now listed as 98kg's. Will be a very different type of player to the one we saw before his injury. Still think there is a decent chance he will be played as a forward after season 2018.

I hope not. He looked at least twice as good down back as he did up forward.

I suppose 1 of he or Cox probably has to play there though if we want all four of the KPD guys in the team.

Listened to LDU live on SEN this morning. Very impressive young bloke. A couple of interesting points were that he’s been mentored by Matt Lloyd, so Brad will have all the good oil on him. When asked whether he would be happy moving interstate with Brisbane at pick 1 and Freo at pick 2 he said it was no problem at all, although like most draftees he has a preference to stay at home. Interestingly he listed Freo before Brisbane in his answer when the more logical order would have been the other way around. The most stunningly small detail, but at this stage we’re reading far too much into everything said and done. 22 days to go!

IMO pick 2 we can probably expect one of Rayner, LDU, Dow, Brayshaw, or Cerra, and either one of those will be great but it is pick 5 that is of the most interest to me and will shape the rest of the draft. I'm hoping it's Fogarty. In SA's state game against WA at Domain this year, he just looked a class above everyone else. He didn't do a lot but what he did was quality, from memory he kicked the first 2 goals for SA. He is the one I want at 5.

You don't think breakaway pace refers to burst from stoppages or explosiveness? Sorry, I'll be more clear in future :drunk:

I reckon you could compare their underage performances and guys like rankine, lukosious and hill in particular were and are in another league.
