Will be stoked if we get him at 60...

South Adelaide’s Nathan Kreuger is exciting AFL clubs with his raw talent

Andrew Capel, The Advertiser
November 21, 2017 3:36pm

IT took just five quarters of football for spring-heeled Panther Nathan Kreuger to wow AFL recruiters.

In a full match against Vic Metro and a quarter against Vic Country at this year’s AFL under-18 championships, the tall South Adelaide utility turned heads with his freakish athleticism and raw talent.

“Athletically he’s so good that you'd draft him every day of the week,’’ SANFL high performance manager Brenton Phillips said.

“He’s a bit of a freak physically and his upside is enormous.’’

After being left out of the SA side for the first two rounds of the carnival, the 196cm Kreuger shone against Vic Metro with 16 disposals, eight marks, five inside 50s and a goal in a performance that illustrated his strong mix of attributes.

Of his eight marks, three were contested while he won the ball at ground level with ease and used his long left-foot kick with great effect.

Kreuger’s campaign ended a quarter into his next match when he was concussed after he hit heads with an opponent in a tackle.

But his name had already been etched into recruiters’ minds.

Kreuger became one of only eight SA players to be invited — on the recommendation of at least five AFL clubs — to the AFL Draft Combine in Melbourne.

“I didn’t think I’d get the opportunity to go there because I didn’t play too many State games but obviously I must have done enough to impress in that game against Vic Metro,’’ Kreuger said.

“The clubs must have seen that I’ve got some decent attributes and wanted to get me in for a closer look, which was good.

“Since the national championships I’ve had nine AFL clubs ring me.’’

Phillips concedes Kreuger is far from the finished product but said his upside is off the charts.

“He’s still very much learning the game, the game-sense part of it and he needs to stay involved in games for longer,’’ Phillips said.

“But there’s no doubt he has some terrific traits.’’

Kreuger, who spent most of last season playing in the Panthers’ under-18s before finishing the year in the reserves, was born in Darwin before moving to the SA Fleurieu Pensinsula town of Victor Harbor with his family six years ago.

Now living in Adelaide’s western suburbs with his parents and four siblings, Kreuger in 2014 represented the Flying Boomerangs indigenous team at the under-16 national championships on the Gold Coast.

While his size and versatility are key attributes and allow him to play at either end of the ground and even as a big-bodied midfielder, Kreuger prefers being stationed in attack, where he did his damage for the Croweaters.

He plays like Port Adelaide swingman Justin Westhoff and lists star forwards Joe Daniher (Essendon) and Lance Franklin (Sydney) as two of his favourite players.

“Obviously my versatility is a strength but at this stage of my career I feel more comfortable up forward,’’ Kreuger said.
Terrible name. Terrible haircut. Name one player named Nathan that has long hair that has ever been any good at AFL

Can someone on the (A) Brayshaw at 2 or 5 train riddle me this?

Who's to say Hamish isn't as good as Andrew - just a year more developed for considerably less expense? He's a year older, their stats this year are essentially identical. Who's to say Hamish isn't just developing a year later than Andrew, yet their ceilings are similar? What has Andrew showed that Hamish hasn't?

They share the same surname, that's about it. One is rated very highly, one might not even get picked.

Sam Lansbergers thinks Rayner could fall to North.

I don't think it will happen, but a couple of possibilities:

1. Brayshaw
2. LDU
3. Dow
4. Rayner
5. Cerra

Hamish was 4th in the Morrish Medal. Andrew wasn't in the top 10.
You realise its hard for rep players to win the state league colts F&B since they miss nearly half the season because of championships.
How many Clarke medalists even get drafted let alone prove any good? (spoiler, it's not many) only reason The only reason he is there to finish fourth is because he went undrafted last year and played as a 19 year old this.

Interesting, Glen Luff (Champion Data) is pretty certain Freo take LDU at #2.

In terms of pure stats, their top five in order is:

Rayner
Stephenson
Brayshaw
LDU
Higgins

This would be a start the car moment. Inside, skilled tall-mid with capacity to push forward as a hit up target and a clearance inside/outside mid with speed and a track record of hitting the score board. Ahh to dream.

I'm still unsure of Cerra but sounds like the club likes him.

Pretty handy with all the talk of Brayshaw going at 1 to get him at 5.

I'd imagine Twomey is feeling pretty nervous though. Lot of expectation on his phantom being pretty close to the final draft and 1 and 2 are looking like the only safe-ish bets, and even those are no certainties compared to other years.

I understand the caveats. But I'm still yet to hear a tangible upside to Andrew's game versus Hamish's, apart from the year of age difference and the fact that Andrew's combine results were outstanding (as compared to Hamish being in the same gene pool, but unable to test last year due to injury). It seems the established view is 'Andrew is better' - however, I can't help but feel that during Andrew's meteoric rise, their relative values have fallen out of sync. In September, Andrew "bolted", by all accounts, into top 10 contention. After his combine testing he bolted, yet again, to #1 calculations. At least with, say, the Swallows and Kolodjashnijs there was tangible, relatively objective strengths and differences - I'm just hunting for what people think those differences are here.

[edit: also Hamish missed 12 TAC games, which kind of renders the championships moot.]
