2017 AFL fixture news and wishlist

Said it before in other threads (and it doesn't seem to concern most around here), but the 4:30 fixtures aren't great for people involved in local footy. Seems counter-productive to the growth of the game to make us choose between our local and pro clubs.

Caused me to drop from a 17-year season ticket holder to two 3 game memberships this year. Looks like I'll be doing the same next year.
hard to please everyone D3, the younger kids usually have their games in the morning so good for them. i love the twilight time slot as i have an hour trip each way from where i live and gets the grand kids (and me) home and in bed at a decent time. the saturday night slot is also usually kept for the better performed/tv audience teams which sadly we are not part of yet.

Huh? is this a change from this year where we could see every away game? I didn't pay attention to the telecast deal so I have no idea
Nah apparently it's built into the current broadcast deal that the AFL have with the tv partners that if you are in QLD then you/we will get all games televised. I posted that rant after I flipped through the fixture PDF on the AFL website and saw 1 game in there - evidently they didn't expect anyone outside of Victoria to read it. :)

As someome with young kids, 7.30 starts with the game finishing Round 10.30, and getting home post 11pm is not great. When you talk growth for the game you need the next gen attending the games and playing footy. As mentioned, most kids play in mornings and twilight slot gives families a lot mofe incentive to get to a game.

Lions and Suns games are always on FTA locally up here. When the AFL talks about FTA i believe they are usually talking about the games shown nationally.

Because there is only the 2 teams here our local teams are given preference and are always shown.

Whewell. what would every second weekend be without sitting in front of the TV trying to come up with excuses to stop watching the lions

The lions have published the schedule early, the juniors should work around it with the scheduling.

I do like the socialising advantages of the twilight games but I think prefer the general atmosphere of day or night games.

Happy with lots of twilight games as my wife and I have an agreement that on weekends if the Lions or Storm are playing a twilight game she cooks, if not I cook.

Haha. they can't even sort out divisions or the draw till half way through the season. very frustrating trying to organise anything during the season.

Write up on the AFL website.
Looks pretty good when the only 2 negatives are No Friday night games and a back to back away games.

PROS: From last season's finalists, the Lions play only the premiers twice. Three of their last four games are at the Gabba. The Lions also host traditional Victorian clubs Essendon, Geelong and Carlton.

CONS: No Friday night games, not a big surprise given their dismal form last season. Back to back away games in round seven and eight in Sydney (against the Swans) and Launceston (against Hawthorn).

PLAY TWICE: Gold Coast, Essendon, Richmond, Western Bulldogs, Port Adelaide

BYE: Round 11

FIRST FOUR WEEKS: Gold Coast (a), Essendon (h), St Kilda (a), Richmond (h).

LAST FOUR WEEKS: Western Bulldogs (h), Gold Coast (h), Melbourne (a), North Melbourne (h).

SIX-DAY BREAKS: Four

THEY SAY: "The fixture gives us really good consistency in the timing of our home games on Saturday evenings, which is great for fans and our corporate partners ," CEO Greg Swann said. "We want to become relevant again as a club and owning a regular timeslot at the Gabba is a big part of that. There are also six games in Melbourne - including two in the opening five rounds - which rewards our loyal Victorian fans. From a footy perspective, we have a good spread of games and only single trips to Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Tasmania, so there is plenty of opportunity for our team to excel."

WE SAY: A pretty good draw for the rebuilding Lions. Starts with the Q-Clash, only one trip to Perth and only play the premiers twice. Good from a commercial sense, too, with Essendon, Geelong and Carlton travelling to the Gabba. - Lee Gaskin

Like the night game options..... I'll be there for the Geelong, Adelaide and Roos matches.

And of course round 2 in other colours.

You should buy a membership then we have snacks

because kids will be upset at staying up a little longer?

No, as in they are young young kids and they turn feral after about 8pm. Ruins their sleep and are feral the day after. So it is a big price to pay going to the footy with the kids.

Im more a wear the kids out and let them have a late night in vain hope they sleep in the next day type of parent. usually lots of holes in that approach though haha
