What's the point, waking up on GF day is on par with Xmas in Vic at least, that big build up then waking up Saturday knowing there is something special happening that day. Why make us wait! And then think of the supporters etc who watch from home who have the early BBQ party or whatever. Most would be pie eyed and not remember the game if it was a night game. Plus call off Sunday fan day, the players would be rooted. Push the fan day time back but that clashes with the NRL GF. Just leave it how it is. You can't have that post game kick to kick out on the street in the dark!

You also have the post game functions that clubs would make a mint off and fans get to celebrate at as well as the fact a lot of kids won't last til the end of the game. It's just ridiculous the constant calls to change things in the pursuit of POTENTIAL $$$$. Things ain't broke, no need to fix it.

What's absurd about it?

It's absurd because millions of Australians, indeed the clear majority, are simply never going to give up their Saturday afternoon to sit in front of the TV for a few hours. This isn't new information. Night games from Round 1 to Preliminary Finals always get more viewers. It's why hypocrites in this very thread complain when their club's fixture comes out each year. This year's grand final ended a few minutes past 3pm in parts of the country, that is plainly ridiculous.

If they want to remove it from Saturday afternoon why not make it Sunday night. Casual viewers aren't going to sacrifice a night out partying to sit at home watching football. Sunday night is the best rating time of the week, may as well go the whole hog.

move the GF public holiday to the Monday too

I'd say the afternoon final will last until 2022 when the current contract is up and they will use that as the main bargaining chip to drive up the price next time round.

it is the start of a new broadcast rights cycle starting next year... they have a chance to implement a twilight GF starting next year.... AFL dragging their feet on this is absurd... WA footy fans should be able to watch the GF well into the afternoon, not bloody lunch time

if "tradition" is what's on people's thoughts, why not make the lead up finals mostly in the day time?

Week 1
Sat, 1:10pm, 3:40pm
Sun, 1:10pm, 3:40pm
Week 2
Sat, 1:10pm, 3:40pm
Week 3
Sat, 1:10pm, 3:40pm

Why not? They do it for Cup Day in Victoria, why should the GF be any different? Plus you have the "theatre goer" types who watch during the day but generally have other things to do on a Saturday night so you would lose a substantial viewership that way as well.

Also it's disingenuous to say they "sit in front of the tv" most people are asthma bbqs pubs functions etc

Is referencing a 'sport' desperate for attention 11 months a year, run by and for people who dress up like a 21st century episode of Downton Abbey, the best comparison you can come up with?

(Yes.)

"Despite the decider being played on Saturday October 1 this year, the AFL commission stuck with the 2.30pm timeslot after long discussions, with the body believed to be evenly split on moving the premiership decider."

Next year, in a few years. Sounds like change is happening sooner or later.
Does Gil or Fitzpatrick have the final vote if the commission is stuck at 50/50?

Yes, it's like a neurotic compulsion from the AFL to need to change things. They can't get clashing jumpers right, they flounder over equalisation, they have no idea how to deal with the drugs issue in football, interpretation of the rules has gone to hell in a hand basket, but if they can find something to change, even if it's a crappy idea like shifting the time slot of the Grand Final, then they think they can justify their miserable existence.

A night grand final will see a huge spike in amount of drunk in public arrests on the day.

People will still get to the pub/barbecue at 11am, and drink heavily until the bounce at 7:10pm.

Recipe for disaster

So now Gil thinks it's "inevitable"

Spineless idiot would sell his first born child to broadcasters

If it wasn't for 'spineless idiots' we'd still have all six games on a Saturday afternoon.

You'd think no football is going to be played the way people are sooking over this.

AFL fans whinge like no other. It's a time slot change, its like a 4 hour difference. Grow the * up.

"hur dur its just a profits grab"

Oh you mean the profits that ensure this league exists right? God forbid they move a game by 4 hours to chase those. FMD

People generally aren't thick as s**t. They'll start drinking later in the day.

So the people constantly calling for change always point to the NFL and PL to what we should make our competition like but they both have the vast majority of their games starting at 1pm Sunday and 3pm Saturday respectively.
