hey guys.
Sorry to intrude, but if you guys end up with pick 1, who do you think your recruiters are likely to choose: Dow or Rayner or someone else?

Cheers

We'll reach or a 192cm bloke who's been alternating between playing key forward and key back at u18 level.

For years he'll not really find a place despite many opportunities. Eventually he'll settle down as a 3rd tall who can sometimes stop his man and occasionally get a handball off to someone capable of rebounding.

He'll end with 80-120 games and we'll reflect on him as a good clubman but rue the champions we could've drafted instead.

torn now as to whether we trade or hang on to it. In an ideal world Kelly stays for two more years then we open up the vault. Gets a crack at a premiership and then knows he can come to a club that's loaded up at two drafts. Add Martin and sheesh!

Also I'd hate to see gws sort themselves out with another number 1 pick.

After that we should be looking at

#19 - obrien or l Fogarty
Cassidy parish with a late pick/rookie

I’m sure as hell no junior footy expert but my spidey senses get all a tinglin’ when you hear that the most talented player in the draft hasn’t worked on his endurance in the last few years of his junior footy. And that he was not chasing or really trying in a recent school game. 4 months before the draft. With scouts aplenty watching him.

Rayner is a beast and his physical attributes will transfer to AFL level, much like Dustin Martin’s. He isn’t just physically well developed, but his core strength looks immense, his explosiveness is there for all to see and despite moving at pace he looks like a cruiser, meaning his skill execution is better than most at pace.

But what does his lack of development in endurance mean regarding his commitment and mindset? Does he have what it takes to be a full time professional athlete? Will he be able to do the required work to become a midfielder at the next level? These are significant question marks and the difference between using pick one on a top shelf mid or a forward flanker/forward pocket.

If these are questions that are being asked by recruiters then it is no surprise that we would be looking at Dow or LDU, neither of whom have the physical attributes of Rayner but may actually get the best out of themselves and become top line mids, or at worst, very good mids, which we need.

Silvagni, Brownless, Fletcher, West – father-sons to take the 2018 draft by storm

The 2018 AFL national draft could throw forward as many as 8 father-son selections.

Future Stars expert Terry Wallace went through his ‘phantom draft’ for next year and listed a number of youngsters who will be eligible to play for the same clubs as their fathers.

“It looks like being a Super Draft next year,” said Wallace on Future Stars on Sunday.

“The thing that we always love on this show is the father-son stories and we’ve got quite a few of those in the picture, when we look at guys who have a real opportunity.”

One in particular has caught the eye of Wallace, who added: “One that I’m interested in is Rhylee West, Scotty West’s boy.”

Another top hope is Gold Coast Suns academy ace Bailey Scott – son of ex-Geelong and North Melbourne small forward/rover Robert – who is available to three clubs and will be highly-touted next year.

But apart from the progeny of a seven-time Best & Fairest and a one-time Premiership player, there are six other potential father-sons who could make their way to the respective club of their dad in next year’s draft.

Potential father-sons in 2018 draft:

Ben Silvagni – son of Carlton legend Stephen

Oscar Brownless – son of Geelong great Billy

Zach Hart – son of Adelaide hero Ben

Joel Crocker – son of former North Melbourne star Darren

Jake Bradshaw – son of ex-Brisbane full-forward Daniel

Mason Fletcher – son of Essendon favourite Dustin

Bailey Scott – son of former Geelong and North Melbourne small forward Robert

Rhylee West – son of ex-Western Bulldogs superstar Scott

Patrick Cripps plays with Ben Silvagni’s older brother Jack at Carlton and has already seen the highly-rated Son of SOS around the traps.

“Yeah I do see the big fella around,” said the Blues star midfielder.

“He’s about 196-197(cm) so hopefully he gets down to the club.

“Jack’s a really good player as well, he reads the play nicely.”

Check out Plough’s phantom draft for 2018 in the video below:

In Plow's top 20 for 2018
4. Nick Blakey
5. Tarryn Thomas
13. Bailey Scott ("He's the one. Clever, creative, footy IQ, reads the game well whether it's on the wing or HF" - Kevin Sheahan)

Need to trade for future picks. Swallow, Goldstein, Mullett etc should all be on the table.

in a perfect world, Kelly goes through to the PSD.

Here are AFL.com.au's five leading contenders for this year's No.1 pick.

Cameron Rayner
Midfielder/half-forward

Rayner became the favourite for the No.1 pick with his brilliant under-18 championships, when he tore through the carnival across half-forward and through the midfield. Rayner kicked 12 goals in Vic Metro's four games, averaged 18 disposals and impressed with his power, physicality and skills. He is a game breaker with his long kicking, overhead marking and presence around goal. The query from clubs is around Rayner's aerobic capacity and it is something he needs to improve, but he sits as the most exciting player in the draft. Had 28 disposals and kicked two goals in a very good outing for the Western Jets on the weekend.

Paddy Dow
Midfielder

It has been more of a slow burn for Dow, but he is hitting the end of the season in full swing. The Bendigo Pioneers midfielder had a day out on Sunday, when he gathered 35 disposals, six clearances, seven inside-50s and booted two goals. Dow has been a goalkicker throughout the year, and he's comfortable spending plenty of time pushing forward. He is tough, good by foot, has a real turn of pace that he's showing more and more, and he's been very consistent. There's not a lot of fuss about the way Dow plays but he just continues to pile on the very good games which sees him right near the top.

Luke Davies-Uniacke
Midfielder

The Dandenong Stingrays midfielder is a ball-winner who can also provide some outside dash and speed. He's best when fighting for the ball, digging it out and then bursting away. Davies-Uniacke is also capable of spending some time forward, where he has shown he can grab the ball in the air and provide a target. At his 187cm height he is one the bigger side for a midfielder, and he's had a good season. Had a brilliant start to the national carnival for Vic Country with a best-afield display before some quieter moments. Could be the best pure midfielder out there, which pushes his No.1 credentials.

Jarrod Brander
Key defender/forward

Brander stands as the leading key position player in the draft, particularly after the withdrawal of Will Sutherland. He hasn't had the same consistency to his game as the midfielders who are in this bracket, but can play at both ends of the ground. Brander, who was formerly a part of Greater Western Sydney's academy before its zone was realigned, played well on the weekend for the Pioneers in a forward post, taking nine marks, booting two goals and collecting 21 disposals. He is a good kick, can read the ball well in the air and has dominated games, but one of the midfielders looks more likely to take out the No.1 position.

Adam Cerra
Midfielder

A classy, smart and poised midfielder who makes things look easy. Cerra is a polished option and reasonably low risk as a likely early pick: he picks the right options, uses the ball well and can also kick goals. He doesn't have the same get-away burst or explosiveness which may hurt his No.1 chances in comparison to the other contenders. But he's clean and smart and never appears rushed. Cerra won't play again this season after having shoulder surgery recently.

Keep the pick, get dusty this year and Kelly in two years time.
I would be happy with Dow or Rayner.
If we get Rayner it will be don't argue season at Arden St with him, Zurhaar, Cunners and Martin.

Those highlights of Rayner are too good to pass up.

Notice the last qrt heroics against all stars. Three bounces down the wing.nothing but net. Same with the set shot 10 mins later. Didn't seem like his endurance was hampering him.

Handballs flat and putting team mars into space.

Kicking goals with ease from 50.

Tackles well.

Centre square work clearly strong.

Happy to go onto left when needed.

The kid is a jet. Him and Simpkin inside and around forward 50 and bursts in the middle will give us much joy in the years to come.
