Good win considering her circumstances but how is that for a path to a WTA title. Almost a run of the board of non top 100 players with Falconi just scraping in. You'd probably say the best player she played was in qualies, Urszula Radwanska.

i really think more girls should target these type of tournaments. the field was weak because of Indian Wells and the middle east premiers. only the Asian based players were interested. the top players who did turn up didnt really care. Garcia/ Svitolina/CSN all lost first round all withdrew in Elanas case.

it was ripe for the taking. just like Hobart was and i am sure several more will be. not all WTA Internationals fields are the same.

EDIT: Barty is also in the final in the doubles with Casey. you would think it will be a double.

EDITx2: one more thing. Mertens was the 7th seed here and she is ranked #80 odd. but this field was still stronger than the Rio WTA event last year when the 8th seed was ranked at #104.

compare that to the czech open, where you had all the czech superstars, Stosur and that is just off the top of my head. seems silly that they are the same ranking points but that is how the system works.

Querrey ended up beating Nadal and winning the title , he also beat Thiem and Goffin in that tournament, so it's not that bad a loss .

He sits at 82 with the protected ranking, which was just outside the cutoff for direct entry into IW. But with some pulling out, he has made direct entry. He still may pull out, but hasn't yet that I'm aware of.
