I think Poppy has to stay for his defensive pressure. Sicily cant make a tackle stick and Hardwick isn't close to ready.
I never said we were going to win the premiership, but your argument is that we don't have enough genuine A-graders to contend, yet the reigning premiers have very few genuine A-graders, so...

Interesting to look at. What constitutes an A-grader? For mine, you need to look at positions. An A-grade midfielder might be a top 20 player in that position. Whilst a KPD might be top 10. Ruckman only top 5. Slow day so I'm going to give it a crack between us and the Dogs.

I believe the pure wing role is back with a vengeance in todays game so will grade on that too. Also, the HHF role that Gunston and Toby Green play is vital in todays footy.

Dogs:

The Bont
Morris
M. Boyd (AA)
JJ
Hunter

Hawks:

Rioli
Breust
Gunston
Smith

Things look good for the hawks as that core still has plenty of footy left. One would think by end of season 2017 O'Meara and T. Mitchell will be added to that list. Burton a few years down the track. The real diffence however is the dogs whilst likely losing Morris and M.Boyd could add Libba, Macrae, Dalhaus, T.Boyd, Roughead, Smith, Wallis, Adams and Daniel to that list.

ps. Giants:

Mumford
Shiel
Ward
Shaw
Kelly (wing)
Cameron
Deliedio (HHF)
Green
Williams
Wilson
Scully (wing)
Coniglio

I did one not long ago but i'm gonna experiment with another team:
B: Stratton Brand Gibson
HB: Burgoyne Frawley Birchall
C: Shiels Mitchell Smith
HF: Poupolo Gunston Rioli
F: Bruest Vickery Fitzpatrick
Foll: McEvoy JOM Hodge
Int: Duryea Whitecross Burton Hartung

Emg: Sicily(very unlucky), Lovell, Schoenmakers/Litherland/O'Rourke/Langford

A bunch of people looking to get into that side as is shown by me indecision on who gets the last Emg spot
Obviously i put in all of Fitzy, BB & Vickery in this side with BB & Fitzy sharing the ruck quite evenly and Vickery being more of a FF and not rucking much at all.

Brand needs game time. I thought he was actually quite good last year and there were times when i just thought this kid is gonna be great. He releases pressure off Gibbo and Frawley so Gibbo can roam more freely to rebound and get that 2nd/3rd forward. Brand will be on resting ruckman/2nd tall and Frawley of cause taking 1st forward. Brand takes 1st forward when Frawley rests.

Would like to see Hodge go forward a bit more and rotate with Rioli & Poppy getting some midfield time along with Shiels being in more centre bounces and taking a more senior role in the middle.
Don't like the idea of Bruest playing more midfield minutes and would rather him stay primarily forward and instead see Poppy take more of a midfield role.

Burton is coming along nicely and should earn his spot in the side at the start of the season and become a permanent fixture inside our best 22 and do stuff like go into defence during junk time and rotate through midfield and forward the rest of the time. Whitecross is a calm player which can go into whatever position needs covering.

Hartung provides some well needed speed and will run between HBF and HFF all day same with Smith who provides more grunt than Hartung.

Umm, so essentially Sicily is 'very unlucky' because your suggesting Fitzpatrick is a better forward option? Vickery was recruited to play the David Hale role that was so valuable to our set-up.

Sicily kicked 30 odd goals last year in his first full season, it's be on ludicrious to think his not starting best 22

im not suggesting Fitzy is a better Sicily. Sicily just can't ruck.
Its hard leaving Sis out but i was experimenting with a team involving all 3 because i think it could work. How do you knowSis was brought in to play Hales role?

Won't be playing all 3 of Bigboy / Fitzy / Vickery at once! Far too top heavy with that lineup. Schoenmakers / Sicily miles ahead of Fitzy. If anyone goes out for Fitzy then it's Bigboy

Just my humble opinion, but Schoenmakers and Langford could both be starters in round 1. I know it seems backwards in a way, because they disappointed this season, but if you look at the years they excelled (2012/2015 for Schoey, 2014 for Langford) it's clearly because they weren't injured and played consistently.

I especially feel this with Langford. His 2014 had me feeling he would become our best midfielder, and I stubbornly refuse to give up that belief. If Vickery was brought in to take Schoey's role, I get that.

That's probably not a bad effort at the round 1 team but a naysayer could easily make the following arguments in response:
1. Brand, Fitzmagic, BB, Doc and Billy aren't up to it.
2. Gibbo, Birch and Hodge are on their last legs and
3. The kids coming through aren't flash (apart from Tom, JOM and Ryan)

An argument could be mounted that we are 4/6 players away from being a top side, well THE top side, again. I can't see us getting near the Dogs or Giants. Of course I could be wrong.

You lost me with Hunter. And once Macrae stops surprising players and umpires with his ridiculous high tackles, he won't look like a particularly important player.

Hunter run second in the premiers B&F.

Hunter, Smith, Scully and Kelly are the elite wingers of the competition. They are all pure wingers.

Gee, even Brian Taylor could probably see Vickery has been brought in to play Hales role. A massive void for us and neither Cegs or McEvoy are competent forwards.

Anyhow, with Fitz being delisted do you now suggest Pittonet will come into the side? Does Sicily remain 'unlucky'?

Well. nah Sicily gets a jumper now. Plz note that was not my preferred side it was just a variation to see what a team involvin all 3 could look like

I would take Hill over Hunter any day of the week.

Being 2nd BNF in a team that used 40-odd players and is a generally even team isn't a big deal.

Birchall comes pretty close for us regularly, and I'd hardly call him an A-grade mid-sized defender.

Brad Hill has never finished top 10 in our B&F. Brad Hill has never made and AA squad. Hunter is elite at what he does. He averaged 28 touches a game. Hilly 17.

It's a fair point about Birch. I was surprised like most he finished top 2. However, his not really a medium defender (3rd tall) but rather an attacking HBF. He has never really been charged with the job of shutting down one of the oppositions most dangerous forwards. Of our back 6 he has generally taken the match up of the oppositions least dangerous forward.

For that reason, I don't see him ahead of Wilson, Willams, Smith, Laird, JJ, Shaw, Rampe and Pittard who all play that role.

I like that. I feel Langford and Schoenmakers just need the confidence. I think vickery wasn't being in to take Schoeys spot, but to assist him as he won't be getting the top defender on him so he may slot more goals

Maybe it's just me, but i would have Birchall up there among the best rebounding defenders in the league. Didn't have the best 2016, but at his best he's an AA level player. His numbers are incredibly consistent over 2012-2016

And I suppose Gibson is an AA key position defender?

Kade Stewart will play a lot of games next season. He was impressive in the three games he played this year, in particular his debut game against Melbourne in the wet conditions.

More then half of his possessions in the AFL and VFL were contested, solid tackler and excellent finisher around goals.

If he can bulk up a bit more and build his endurance he could play on the wing in the future.

He's a long way off the wing for mine. He's a Poppy 2.0 for mine at the moment and expect if he gets 4 - 6 AFL games next year he will have done well.

Lovell will get games well ahead of him for mine.

He was terrible in the games when Stratton was out or injured.

Stratton and Frawley are our key defenders. If Brand steps up Gibbo is released to be the swing defender who destroys opposition teams.

I'll have a crack:
B Gibson Frawley Stratton
HB Birchall Brand Hodge
C Smith Mitchell Burgoyne
HF Gunston Vickery Bruest
F Rioli Sicily Puopolo
Foll McEvoy Shiels O'Meara
Int: Burton Hartung Whitecross Dureya

Couldn't decide whether to go SChoey or Sicily at FF, so went the younger guy for no real reason
