2017 - Best 22

Hi, what happens when all of Giles, Lycett and Vardy are available? Will Vardy still play?
Would be form dependant - I can see Vardy keeping his spot ahead of Giles

showed great poise against a weak freo and used the ball very well
good signs
That was Freo close to full strength only missing Neale, Sandi and Bennel who has yet to play a game for them. I think Freo are bottom 4 material but their midfield is usually their strength.

B b b b but remember that was their first game of the year:huh:..................:cool:just like it was the first game for 12 of our best 22 players who didn't travel 9,000 km last week.:D

Hurn, Le cras, McGovern, Darling, Sheppard, Butler, Gaff, Mitchell, Shuey, Hill, Kennedy and Priddis didn't play last week.

It would be interesting to see what difference Sandilands would have made at the centre bounces.

Haha yeah heard that excuse used a bit also apparently it was our grand final lol Freo are irrelevant they will be down the bottom of the ladder.

Dont think Sandilands would of made any difference at all. They comfortably won the hit outs and we blitzed them in the clearances

Best 22 for round 1.

Shep Gov Barras
Hurn Schoey Wellingham

Gaff Priddis Sheed

Darling Petrie Cripps
Hill JK Lecra

Masten put up a fair case to be included in the 22 in jlt 2 In which case Hutchings will be emergency. Nelson almost ready to squeeze out Butler.

Players also close for consideration.

Redden and Cole to push up for a spot playing WAFL . Also Duggan Giles and Slyce get some fitness in WAFL.

Redden no where near the side?

If Lycett is out I think Giles is a better first ruck option than Vardy, because your first ruck actually does need to be able to consistently win hitouts.

Conversely if Lycett is available, Vardy is probably a better backup ruck option than Giles. He's more versatile and will add more around the ground when Lycett is resting, which is what you want if you're going to name a second big man on the bench.

The ache inside when I think how much I miss nicnat is real and not at all homo.

I agree- although I think the buzzword we are using for our rucks is "contest" so it's almost as if we are conceding the hit out and just to make sure the opposition ruckman doesn't have an easy hit out the other way.

Got no issue playing both early on, Vardy hasn't put a door wrong yet. I think Lycett should be given some extra time- it's a long year.

There is one major reason why I'd love to see Mitchell play on next year. How awesome would it be to see a fit NN palming it down to Mitchell in space! That may happen this year, granted, but I think it will be next year when we see him at his explosive best.

It would be very disappointing if we never get to see Naitanui and Mitchell on field at the same time.

Would be an epic case of blue balls knowing what could have been

Shep, Mitchell and NN all in the same team :straining:

Pretty much spot on.

This is the team I think they will pick for RD 1

B : Sheppard Schofield Barrass
HB: Wellingham McGovern Hurn
M: Gaff Priddis Masten
R: Giles Shuey Mitchell
HF: Jetta Darling Lecras
F: Cripps Kennedy Petrie
I: Yeo Sheed Hutchings Butler
E: Vardy Redden Nelson

The defence is settled with Butler to be the 7th defender.

In the ruck Vardy to replace Giles if Giles isn't ready, but Petrie is ahead of Vardy as the 2nd fwd/ruck.

In the midfield Hutchings and Redden are fighting for 1 spot, but as much as they would like to play Redden to get something from their investment Hutchings holds his spot. Yeo to play as a mid/fwd early. With Naitanui out and even with Tunbridge out - who offers something different with his aggression and size around the contest, Yeo with his athleticism will be used around the ball and as an option fwd. If Yeo struggles like he did last year he can always be moved to defence later on.

Up forward having a 2nd tall fwd who can play a small ruck role instead of 2 specialist ruckmen will help a lot. Kennedy and Petrie as the 2 talls allowing Darling to play his natural role as a mid sized fwd. Lecras to play deeper forward and Jetta pushing up to find space.

I would like Nelson in there for his aggression and bravery but I really think that will be the team for RD1.

M: Jetta Priddis Gaff
HF: LeCras Darling Hill
FF:Cripps Kennedy Petrie
R: Vardy Mitchell Shuey

B: Redden Sheed Masten Butler

E: Hutchings Schofield Nelson

I'm in the 2 talls in defence and 6 talls overall camp. That will probably mean that Yeo or Sheppard have to play on a tall again but I still like those match ups.

I'm also in favour of swinging McGovern forward throughout the game but that might only be possible if we play one of MacKenzie or Schofield as well.

Otherwise it's a pretty standard team. Petrie is only in there for balance and it's hard to leave out better footballers for him but you can't ruck Vardy all day.

Likewise, I wonder why we haven't tried Schofield in the ruck. It would allow us to play 2.5 tall defenders, which balances more nicely, and, if we're playing ruckmen who don't win taps but compete around the ground (Petrie), I don't see why Will couldn't pull that off.

Lycett to replace one of Giles/Petrie and NN it replace the other.

I expect once match fit and in form Duggan and Redden come in. We can't have 3 talls in back AND three talls in front. 7 talls all up is just way too much, 6 is much more flexible. We clearly seem to be more focused on quick ball movement this year.

I, errr...I think you made your point.

Chrome crashed for one of you, didn't it?

Freo actually won the hitouts so I am not sure that it would of made that big of a difference.
There's hitouts and there's hitouts. Sandi is pretty good with hitouts 2 advantage nowadays
