Dayne Beams appointed Brisbane Lions captain

A tightly contested leadership vote at Brisbane on Monday has seen former Magpie Dayne Beams emerge as the Lions 2017 captain.

In what came down to a narrow contest between three contenders, Beams won the player vote ahead of former skipper Tom Rockliff and Dayne Zorko.

Rockliff is understood to have polled impressively after a strong pre-season under new coach Chris Fagan.

The skipper of the past two seasons almost left the club in controversial circumstances after he put himself on the trade table.

Beams joined the Lions two seasons ago after six years and a premiership at Collingwood.

He sought a trade from the Nathan Buckley-coached Magpies citing family reasons as one factor in his his push to depart.

Can we conclude then that a lot of the playing group don't see an issue with whatever got him in trouble with the club in the first place?

Of course. But you obviously want your captain to have broad respect within the group. A club with our retention issues especially can't have players feeling marginalised or mistreated.

Who cares what he's done in the past. He's obviously making an effort to rectify his ways. Let's continue to support him and our club.

On the vote does this mean Zorko & rocky are VC?

And interesting input TBD, would you say it's more the coaches implementing Beams than the players?

I'd question his motives. He seems to place a high importance on what people think of him. Plus I'm interested in how our captain almost got traded.

No M.Robbo in the leadership group! Very very unlucky for that I feel considering how much he has busted his guts on the field, as well as the mentor senior role he's taken on off field over the off season.
 
Yeah clearly Rocky has had some issues but i am certain they have been blown out of proportion - he still seems very popular within the club. Here's hoping with the pressure as captain of a struggling club off his shoulders he can have a big year - he looks as fit as i have seen him in a long time.. Congrats to Dayne Beams and let's hope he can lead the club forward and hopefully spend plenty of time on the ground and not off it.

Will be interesting to see how Beams goes. Great player who commands respect on the field but injured a lot and he's not a real natural when it comes to the media and fan type captain commitments. Will need Rocky's support

Harris Andrew's offically annoited future captain.
 
How good to see Andrews in that group too. To be voted in by your peers at such a young age... gonna be a big year for him :)
