Anybody can do that...

Jones

As for Jaksch, we can only hope he isn't another Nick Graham. Too good for VFL, not good enough for AFL.
Both have plenty to work on but so far not at AFL standards. Talent wise, Graham appears to me at close to his peak. KJ is still an unknown commodity.

For the small forwards that will likely chop us up if we're forced into 1v1 defending due to quick ball movement up the field.

Small is irrelevant. It's about mobility and exposing them the other way. There is a lot of success recently of taller players shutting down smalls. Marchbank already has shown how good he is on the smaller players. Docherty & Byrne are good as well. As I have said before look at the Hawks & Cats from there flag years. All tallish and mobile.

My point is that we don't have Byrne right now.

So how does that change our recruiting as of today?
With Simpson 18 months away from retirement at most, Plowman, Docherty not going to cope with the quicker blokes, and our defensive group looking for more dynamic rebound as a whole?

I think it leaves us looking for young defender who can play on the elite small forwards if required. Whether that's a draftee or not, I don't know. I've previously suggested Zac Williams from GWS.

Don't agree especially about Docherty & Plowman and I include Marchbank in that lot. IMO the defence looks very very good and needs to be able to settle. Smaller options at the moment are Byrne Smedts Docherty BuckleySheehan and maybe even SPS. That is heaps and team defence is more important as is a diominant midfield. Focus now needs to be on building a midfield and forward line.

I don't know our best 22. Depends on opposition, form, match fitness etc at any given point. However, if at the end end of the year it looks something like:

FB: Plowman Weitering Simpson

HB: Docherty Marchbank Byrne

C: Murphy Petrevski-Seton Cuningham

R: Kreuzer Cripps Gibbs

HF: Jaksch C Curnow Silvagni

FF: Pickett McKay Wright

IC: E Curnow, Phillips, Fisher, Sumner.

With good first seasons from: Smedts, LeBois, Macreadie, Polson, Kerr, and Williamson too.....

....then we'll really be underway, ready to recruit a couple more guns ahead of season 2018, and games 45-66 of the rebuild. Fingers crossed, eh?!

Regularly a fan of your optimism Soap, but I think you're being delusional about our ability to quickly shutdown a good small forward without Byrne.

Long term, it could be a problem.

Alex Silvagni will play round 1
Either starting on the bench and coming on when JW goes forward.
Or starting and allowing a few VFL games into the younger boys.

As for JK, do we not want to reward effort in the VFL, if we have pigeons doing nothing up forward?

Dream 22 at end of 2017:

Sheehan, Marchbank, Plowman
Docherty, Macreadie, Simpson
CCurnow, Gibbs, Murphy
Pickett, Weitering, Sumner
Casboult, McKay, Silvagni
Kreuzer, Cripps, ECurnow
Wright, Byrne, Petrevski-Seton, Cuningham

Expected 22:

Sheehan, Rowe, Plowman
Docherty, Marchbank, Simpson
CCurnow, Gibbs, Murphy
Pickett, Weitering, Palmer
Wright, Casboult, Silvagni
Kreuzer, Cripps, ECurnow
Byrne, Petrevski-Seton, Cuningham, Kerridge

But how does that change now? Byrne will be fit by the end of the year so doesn't that solve the problem and shows there is no need to recruit someone? Personally I think it's the least of our issues

It's the total lack of a queue behind him that is the worry.

Would rather have Byrne contributing more up the field where possible, and that's where a new acquisition comes in.

I think we'll see very soon how good Sheehan is at shutting an opponent down. Remember reading Northern Blues reports before he pushed into the senior side a few years ago that he was a better lock down defender than Tuohy.

Sheehan (& Byrne) are far better in the air than Tuohy, so they won't be as exposed when dragged back to the goal square as Tuohy is (was).

Won't be the best available against Richmond on Thursday but here is my thoughts on the Blues strongest 22 for 2017.

BACKS: Lachie Plowman ~ Sam Rowe ~ Ciaran Byrne
HALF BACKS: Sam Docherty ~ Caleb Marchbank ~ Kade Simpson

CENTRE:
Dale Thomas ~ Patrick Cripps ~ Ed Curnow
FOLLOWERS: Andrew Phillips ~ Bryce Gibbs ~ Marc Murphy

HALF FORWARDS:
Jack Silvagni ~ Jacob Weitering ~ Matthew Wright
FULL FORWARDS: Matthew Kruezer ~ Levi Casboult ~ Jarrod Pickett

INTERCHANGE:
Sam Petrevski Seton ~ Sam Kerridge ~ David Cunningham ~ Rhys Palmer/ Nick Graham

Love the effort you put in finding the best 22 for every team. But there are a couple of questionable areas.

1. Cuningham is one 'n'. I Don't wish for Aph to charge nice visitors. :D
2. Now considering whether it is best to have two ruckmen in one team. Phillips in when Kreuzer is too looks concerning for us in some ways. I'd have Charlie Curnow instead.
3. The rarity of Daisy's best would most likely see him not being best 22. However it seems like Bolton and the coaches haven't given up on him. I personally would. He is way past his best and a poor season should easily see him gone after season's end. I think Smedts is a better option.

Other than that, looks quite good.

EMERG:

If that was the side at years end and picked solely on merit, I'd be a very happy man.

Nice. Like you I'm more about the end of the year than Round One. I really hope it's something like this

B: Byrne Weitering Docherty
HB: Plowman Marchbank Williamson

Foll: Phillips Cuningham Murphy
C: SPS Cripps Charlie

HF: Gibbs Macreadie Pickett
F: LeBois McKay Silvagni

Int from: Rowe Kruezer Sheehan Simpson Fisher Polson Curnow Wright Sumner

Sumner, there's always one that escapes my rather absent mind. I'd love Sheehan to come on as well.

Any particular reason for Macreadie at CHF? Certainly not against it, just thought he plays in the back half.

SOS mentioned when he drafted him he saw him as a possible CHF. Happy to see some flexibility between Weitering Marchbank & Macreadie all being able to swap between attack & defence. Just makes us stronger.

If Wright Smedts Kerridge Palmer can become handy back up players we are doing well

Add another 6-8 more talented kids (incl a possible Pick 1 or 2) and a FA and 2018 then 2019 starts to look very exciting

Sounds good to me, like the idea of flexibility amongst our talls myself.

Are we going to trade our reigning BnF? Are you predicting he'll be out with a season ending injury?

Quit ******* scaring me like this! :fearful::fearful::fearful::fearscream::fearscream::fearscream:

Is Williamson actually a chance or are you all being a bit cheeky after his only preseason game?

Why do you like him so much?
