Everyone with a leg and a ball can kick. Elite kicking though is something else, but then;

So let's just draft another Watson ahead of Luke Parker.
Maybe another DVR ahead of Mitch McGovern.

Like I said; There's more to the game than kicking alone.

I agree with you Harker, but you just have to look at the kids that SOS has drafted, especially in the earlier rounds, despite their size all are exceptional by foot and the decision making around that. Charlie, Cunners, SPS, Fisher, Willo, Weitering (a given), Polson.

That will still be the main criteria, especially if 2 players are ranked similar

What if SOS doesn't agree with the coach? What then? :)

Bolton doesn't recruit nor list manage, although his input is necessary.
Last time the coach got in the way of the recruiter we got Jaksch and Boekhorst..........we go again?

Please don't compare Bolton & SOS with previous regimes. Irrelevant and importantly completely different

Last years group all look like very good ball users. Tick

Bolton is head coach and part of List Management team. I'm sure he will say we need elite ball users especially in the midfield. SOS now go do your thing.

Wasn't laid out for comparison but rather for the idea of conflict given what you put forward, with the "Go Bolts"

I'd say "Go SOS" first, when it comes to recruiting and drafting.

SOS is connected to Laguidice, who is connected to Mathieson. The politics won't escape this.

This was our Phantom draft in late September last year.
Not saying that we're any experts, but it's more likely that no one really is.
Lots to play out just yet, and whatever top 4 we may think we'll see...................we won't.

ROUND 1

1. Will Brodie... ESS
2. Ben Ainsworth... BRIS
3. Hugh McLuggage... FREM
4. Sam Petrevski-Seton... GCS
5. ACADEMY BID CARLTON - (Matched) Jack Bowes... GCS
6. Andrew McGrath... CARL
7. Todd Marshall... RICH
8. Tim English... GWS
9. ACADEMY BID PORT - (Matched) Will Setterfield... GWS
10 Daniel Venables... PORT
11. Jack Scrimshaw... STK
12. Tim Taranto... NTHM
13. ACADEMY BID WCE - (Matched) Harry Perryman... GWS
14. ACADEMY BID WCE - (Unmatched) Kobe Mutch... WCE
15. Joshua Battle... WBD
16. Jarrod Berry... ADE
17. Alex Witherden... HAW
18. Dylan Clarke... SYD
In my defence, I did warn everyone about Brodie and Marshall. I still reckon Mutch slid too far, but that bid does not look great in hindsight. :p

There may well be an element of fact in that, but when implicit decisions are the the feet of one individual, the good ones will cast away the external noise.

We couldn't do it before and set out to drawing swords upon each other. Maybe this time, we can do it right.

Thank **** this didn't happen. Don't want another smal HBF. Although he's talented we need an elite midfielder. Maybe McGrath gets in there eventually but it's a different skill getting your own ball rather than cheap kicks off half back or intercepts off turnover as third man.

Why not? Who had Taranto @ #2 this time last year?

If he has the right character and we trust him to work into a permanent midfield role, Coffield seems to have several traits we'd love.

I don't know his story, but I do like the way he understands his surrounds. We'll see.

You're right, last year everyone penciled in Brodie and McCluggage at 1 and 2 then it all changed in the final few weeks leading to draft day.

But as it stands, my opinion hasn't changed. Maybe it will when I see more.

thanks so much, sps..........cost us a rs..........

Dangerfield isn't considered a great kick and he goes O.K.

Kicking is just one trick. A good one to have, but nevertheless just one trick and I wouldn't want Bolton to pull rank in a Malthouse manner.
SOS is going O.K. and the baker should keep...........you know the rest. :)
Danger is one player (albeit elite). Not to patronize but to state the obvious (though in today's game maybe not so obvious), kicking skills are critical to retaining possession and controlling the game, let alone scoring.

If you don't have a side with predominately decent footskills you won't win many games. Case in point Hawthorn's 'dynasty' (though Bulldogs flag would seem to fly in the face of this).

I was one of Brodie's biggest fans and actually know the kid personally, he started to slip down the draft order late in the piece because of his kicking.

Interesting that despite all of the troubles the GC have had this year with injuries/form he only managed 3 games.

Of course foot skills are important......as are handballing skills....marking skills.....evasive skills......awareness.....and then there's determination....the want to win at all cost....the preparation....the ability to conform to game-change.....the ability to follow team rules....etc etc etc etc.

Kicking is important, but not kicking alone without many of the other equally important facets of our game. Need more than one trick......see Suckling.

Yep. We have had so many butchers in the past.

Guys like Bell, Robinson, and Kerridge are all heart but in their time they have cost us games.

Unfortunately, it can go the other way - Jaksch and Bootsma had excellent skills but seemingly other priorities
True, and kicking skills is not the be all end all of a footballer, but if I were recruiting I would look at getting players with footskills in the earlier picks and those with average disposal much later. Sure there are players who are elite with average footskills, but they are exceptions to the rule.

Yes that does surprise me too. Apparently his form in the NEAFL wasn't too bad either...

I agree. Bolts asks for a type. SOS does the sleection. SOS is the one doing the hard yards going to games, watching hours and hours of video. It means he has a better understanding of each kid.

I am sure SOS also gives Bolts a shortlist with a thorough profile for each prospect. I reckon Bolts MAY have a fair say in which of these 10 15 gets picked, but there is no way he would have the depth of knowledge required for every single prospect.

So I doubt SOS would have even presented the like of Jaksch and Boekhurst as options to the coach.

What are ldu's Knocks ? I thought I'd be happy with Dow/Rayner but after a lil YouTube trip I feel like I'd take ldu even if we had pick 1.

I thought the same but it's hard to tell just watching a highlights package. I think his positioning and reading of the play looks better than some of the other inside mids but it's hard to not be tempted by Rayner.

From the full games I've watched I think I still have Rayner at #1, even though LDU fits a more immediate need.

If Charlie is set to play in the midfield then I'd take Rayner. If not, I think LDU.

I think those highlights are a little misleading. He has size advantage... against other kids. Step into AFL and it won't be as much of an advantage.

The main issue I have is with his kicking. It isn't bad, but he tends to over shoot his targets especially under pressure. Have you watched any footage of guys like Cerra and Constable? If so what do you think? If not, give them a whirl.
