So Im thinking that there is a pretty good chance we will get back into the draft toward the pointy end with a focus on another project tall, more importantly a tall forward.
2017 is supposed to be a "weak" draft but has be gaining ground as one of the deeper drafts for tall players.
If I were a betting man I would say that GW has one eye firmly on Callum Colman-Jones with a sweet spot for Darcy Fogarty if the cards fell his way.
With 4 weeks left & finals to come the anticipation of where & who we may pick will only grow.
We all know that there will be a multitude of selections with a variety of positions but will there be another Ryan Burton in this years draft???
Let's hope so!

This draft is a weird one. Picks 1-3 will consist of very talented players highlighted by Rayner. Picks 4-10 don’t seem as fantastic as other years but still great. From Pick 10 onwards, each player has deficiencies in their game that would see them go second or possibly even third round in other years. The likes of Higgins/O’Brien/Worpel/Petrucelle all seriously pale in comparison to Perryman/Simpkin/Florent/Berry. It is also the first draft where there are practically no standout key tall forwards. Brander is the closest you get and he's currently being used as a defender.

And yet there is speculative talent available at later picks that runs deep. For me this will be the draft of hidden gems – there are plenty of players available at later selections that have attributes akin to elite AFL footballers but also deficiencies that they need to overcome. It is the type of draft where a player selected in the 50’s will be just as capable as one in the late 20’s. It is for this reason that I believe the club did not immediately want to elevate Cousins, Glass or Hanrahan; there are a few of those hidden gems on the radar.

From what I have seen and read these are a few players to keep in mind on draft day.

Aiden Bonar (190 kg 89kg Utility): Skilful, powerful and with above average disposal, Bonar has one of the highest ceilings of any player in this draft. He has fantastic work ethic that translates itself into tackles and hardness at the ball. The problem? Two ACL’s. Unfortunately for Bonar the start to his career has been hampered by two serious injuries. Though these seemingly haven’t impacted his ability to run (part of his rehabilitation was being a runner for Haileybury) he has only recently returned to playing. Regardless, if the medical staff believe these injuries can be managed then Bonar primes as one of the steals of the draft.

Will Walker (187cm 80kg Half-Forward): Walker comes from a soccer background which means he didn’t follow traditional pathways. He has a big frame that still has space to fill, complemented by pace and agility. Despite these attributes, he probably would have been a late rookie selection – if selected at all – until a 3-goal game against the Jets. He thrives on contested ball with more than 60% of his disposals coming from contested scenarios. He doesn’t average extremely high numbers of the ball but is damaging when he does get it. His stocks are rising very fast.

Ian Milera (171cm 64 kg Small Forward): He’s small in stature, but Ian Milera’s skills in the SANFL are on display for all to see. The 19-year-old has all the attributes you want – he has pace, fantastic goal sense, and raw footballing skills that you cannot teach. Has kicked 23 goals from 12 games. His scope of development, with dedication and opportunity, could mirror Eddie Betts. He also reportedly lacks the big ego that accompanies most of these types, perhaps due to being overlooked last year.

Jordan Butts (195cm 80kg Tall Defender): Unfortunate last name aside, Jordan has all the attributes you want in a key defender. He is mobile, has a great vertical leap and a combination of speed and agility that is not usually found in defenders. His kicking skills are generally OK but somewhat mechanical – it reminds me strongly of Lakey in that respect. Unfortunately, Jordan’s form hasn’t been great when given the chance and his thin frame works against him. It should however be noted that he was born on December 31st, 1999 so he’s practically a year younger than all his opponents. His scope of development seems very high for a speculative defender selection.

Brandon Starcevich (187cm 88kg Half-Forward): Starcevich has the Tom Mitchell quality of fantastic vision and composure in traffic – he’s very good at taking pressure from opponents and then passing off to a teammate in better position with his good disposal. He hits packs ferociously and can really break them apart with a combination of speed and strength. When watching the WAFL he’s one that really catches your eye. He doesn’t win a heap of the ball and his endurance limits him to playing mainly across half-forward where he hasn’t really troubled the scoreboards. But he has the scope to move into the midfield and has all the traits to be extremely damaging. If he has big games towards the second half of the season his draft stocks with undoubtedly rise.

Callan Wellings (181cm 71 kg Defender/Midfielder): Another top ager, 19-year-old Wellings has shown fantastic signs in both the TAC Cup and the VFL. He doesn’t have the size, but all his other attributes are just what you want in a midfielder; he is great in contested situations, he can play both inside and outside, he is fantastic in traffic thanks to his agility and pace. He tackles and knows where to run. He has reliable disposal and penetration on his kicks. To be honest I have absolutely no idea why he isn’t considered much more highly be recruiters. Perhaps it is because while everything in his skillset is ‘very good’ none of it is yet elite. But with proper guidance and development he has the ceiling to reach elite level.

These are a few of the probable later selections that caught my eye and I would be ecstatic if any of these players ended up at Hawthorn. Sorry PHAT but if you want a tall forward that won't take 4-5 years to develop then I'd invest in the 2018 draft.

He's not in the draft but there is a certain unrestricted free agent tall forward who is out of contract and the end of the year I wouldn't mind getting, think he used to make jeans or something.

If you're talking about Levi Casaboult then:
1. He's restricted
2. His goal kicking is a massive liability

Sweet as snippets there Vando!
I think you are dead right in that anyone outside the top 20 is as good a chance as any other.
As the weeks roll by & a few more names & mock drafts begin to pop up, finding these hidden gems is a bit of fun.
Last year I was a bit indifferent with not having any ammo but always liked McCluggage & Berry.

Not having a first Rd pick doesn't bother me as I think we could cash in in the second - third Rds if given a chance to get a couple more selections. I think we will go for 3 draft picks & a couple of rookies so there is plenty to look at.

I think we have a 2-3 year window for an in house big man to emerge as that "power" forward.
I just think that GW has dabbled with guys like Mitchell Lewis & Surman but would like to nail that KPP 195+ player this year to be a 2020 starter.

Anyone else think hawthorn think the draft is a fun game?
Clarko "hey Graeme,we will give you the lowest picks possible so they other clubs get a sporting chance!"
GW " I'll only need the rookie draft to get our next guns!"

I'm not sure about fun game, but I do think they know their stuff a lot more than people give them credit for. This is why I think the O'Meara trade isn't a big deal as many make out, they would have considered all the variables and made a decision on this basis. They would have known that this draft is shallow this year and didn't think we would end up with a top 3 to 5 pick. It will be interesting to see how well the Saints go with our first rounder.

You are obviously more patient than I am when watching Langers kick for goal...

I certainly don't need two guys that kick like he does up forward...

:)

I would like to see us go for some outside run and carry.
We typically target kids with clean disposal so I have no reason to think it will be different this year.
Our first pick is tied to GWS 2nd rounder....,which will be in the 32-36 range I would think.
Then our 3rd rounder about 42-46.....so checking out some phantoms (because I don't get to see any of these players), like the look of

Lochie O'Brien - one of the best kicks in the draft according to Knightmare. Dual sided and has line breaking ability.
Not much of a contested ball winner

I will add some more as I do some research

Is size why he wasn't drafted? Looks small at vfl level. Only look smaller at afl. Certainly looks to have good pace, skills and decision making from the limited amount I have seen. Would be a rookie prospect I assume. Or are you talking about senior list?

He's a great potential small forward, he will get picked up - if not by us.

I like him. What's the knock on him though? I recall Abasi saying he was a bit one dimensional
Not really one dimensional, more I query if he has enough tricks to make it at AFL level. He's a Jack Lonie type.

i think we may draft a Box Hill Player or 2

some of the players in contention

Anthony Brolic - 21 y/o 183cm 86kg - good physique, has been one of our best forwards for box hill this year

Chris Jones - 22 y/o 196cm 85kg - really promising tall forward, i would be shocked if he didnt get at least rookied for an AFL team

Sam Switkowski - 20 y/o 178cm 68kg - x-factor forward/mid, another talented kid that came through the Box Hill system

i hope we list or rookie Jones, Brolic and Switkowski.....

Billy Murphy - 21 y/o 173cm 67kg - small running forward pocket, can kick bags of goals, has a lot of heart and goal-sense, negatives are his height and weight, which might hold him back from top-level football

Max Warren - 24 y/o 183cm 82kg - very skillful player, have only seen a little of him, but he is impressive overall

Warren has skill and i like him, but being 24 and a bit of a risk, Murphy is a great little battler, but im not sure if he would fit in the AFL, but all-in-all these guys have been HUGE for Box Hill and most are still young...

Joel Garner would be nice but likely to go in first round. Charlie Spargo may drift to our first pick in the '20's. Then snap up CJ and upgrade Hanrahan and Cousins.

I like Garner, a perfect Hodge replacement. His brother will be with us in 2 years through the academy. Both die hard Hawk fans. Wonder if saints would give us our first back for 2018 first? Should be available around #10

I noticed Changa Jiath in the rooms for Gibbo's retirement presser, looks like we are investing in this kid. Is there any mail on Tyrone Hayes, seems to have had some injuries this year but a highly rated junior?

On iPad using BigFooty.com mobile app
Tyrone has high risk element because of his out of footy "commitments". I think he is very similar to Dayle Garlett. Plenty of talent but plenty of risk to go with it.
