List Mgmt. 2017 Draft Needs...

Some posters have already pointed out that with the changes to the rookie list (no need to upgrade them anymore) that most clubs will be going short on their main lists. Clubs may all fill up their rookie lists this year to the full quota. This actually makes the rookie draft quite exciting too. I am wondering if clubs will gamble and leave out players that they would usually take with their last 1 or 2 picks and try to nab them as rookies instead.

Who do people think will be the sought after rookies? I am thinking that Sambono is the type of player that every club will want to rookie, but perhaps no club will want to take on their main list. We also have some interesting SA prospects that, since these guys may do a Jonty and slide all the way out, might be available too. Ben Miller killed it at the combine, but he might not get picked up in the main draft too. Personally I would be really excited to have Sambono, Miller, Edwards and perhaps another SA slider on our rookie list pushing their claims and being able to be called up at any time.

If we're talking rookie picks Lachie Murphy is very deserving of a spot and I'd be surprised if he's not under serious consideration by Hamish and the boys after an outstanding first SANFL season for us. Other clubs might be having another look after he backed up his 2016 TAC form with a fine showing in the SANFL.

I don't think it was by accident that he landed in SA as one of our "permanent" top up players in the SANFL after surprisingly missing out in the 2016 draft after an outstanding TAC Cup season where he played mostly as an inside midfielder and saw him win the Northern Knights B & F.

Very similar in stature and playing style to Rory Laird but with more speed who also came off the rookie list.

You like watching highlight reels, watch this and tell me he's not worth a shot at the big time. You'll spot his teamate the Sig also.

Yeah, highlights are impressive, especially his tackling. How did he go in the SANFL B&F. I guess the big question on him will be height. You really have to be absolutely elite at something (most of the time kicking goals) to make it as a vertically challenged player these days :). As you say, he would have had every chance to impress our recruiting department.

Questions that come to mind for me are - Is he too similar to the Gooch? Where he is ever going to get a look into this team as long as Gallucci is there? Couldnt we just keep him on our development list for one more year. He will not play AFL next season anyway. I guess it depends on who else is available at the RD.

Pretty impressive actually... here’s some mone footage of him...

Check out his first kick in this footage.. goes into the wind (you’ll see the flag) from well inside D50 all the way into his attacking 50!!... it’s a monster!... takes a screamer too...

Looks a tough, gutsy little bugger...

.
If Laird went down he'd be very, very capable of playing his role and I have absolutely no doubt he can play AFL next season. Just like Laird he's extremely good overhead for his size and a better kick, and dare I say it attacks the contest even harder than Rory. I really don't see the similarities to the Gooch who is more suited to the outside mid/small forward role similar to Cameron whereas Lachie is more an inside mid/HBF/BP.

I wouldn't be at all shocked if we don't get the chance to rookie him.

Should go main draft based on his SANFL year

I feel like every team in the VFL/SANFL/WAFL has a player like Murphy. A good solid inside mid who just a bit too short.

Of course, the afro should be enough to get him picked.

I've long been a fan of Jack Roughsedge as you know, another lad that's had a shit run with injuries and another to do a knee and then have to have the op redone after the surgeon didn't get it right the first time. Inside beast, big bodied, not quick and tends to go the handball as his 1st option but would be great for someone to give him a shot. High character lad too by all reports, formerly Captain of the Oakleigh Chargers.
The one that really impressed me from those clips is Matthew Day, I’ve seen him once before and he didn’t get much of it but showed flashes of pace and desire, well that really comes across in that highlights video. Wonder if he could last to 77

Yeah, I was thinking he could play Laird's role too. Very courageous player by the looks. Looks like he has more tools than Laird, except Laird finds the footy like few other players in the entire comp. Hopefully we can pick him up as a rookie. I do see strong similarities with the way he moves to Gallucci. We start to look a bit diminutive with Eddie, Gallucci, Laird and then Murphy also in the same team. Its going to be about balance. Not sure how many shorties we can have that many in the same 22, but Richmond would argue otherwise.

He played almost 100% across half back this year in the SANFL in a similar role to Rory Laird. He wouldn't be playing as a midfielder in the AFL he'd play HBF/BP on the dangerous small forwards of the Daniel Rioli, Cyril Rioli, Eddie Betts, Jeff Garlett ilk.

Kristof... He’s actually, at 178cm tall, the same height as Laird.. and he plays tall like Laird with his overhead marking.

My biggest concern next season is the fact we will not have smith all year. In my opinion, the games we lost this season weren’t the ones Rory Sloane was tagged out they were the ones where Smith and Laird were quiet or shut down by the opposition..

We have Seedsman as smith’s obvious replacement but he’s so damn inconsistent. We need to explore every possible option to help try and fill this role. This young lad looks like he could be one of those options.

And the other thing I don’t want to see next season is two lads in Mackay and Atkins keep getting games when they continue to shirk applying tackles and, particularly in Mackay’s case, are inconsistent week to week. Rather see some of the other lads get a go.

Yet to be convinced on Seedsman. Coffield is my hope to cover Smith. Although even if he slid to us I doubt a first year player would necessarily do better than a mature Seeds. Would still want us to put games into him if we get him.

Think the Smith cover could come from Gibbs and Sloane rotating from there.

After backing the winner yesterday, i've formed the opinion that there are a bunch of potential mature aged guys worth a punt at the end of the draft or as rookies. Most of these guys would get picked up if the Oakland A's were drafting. Of course a few of them would probably get delisted by mid season too...

As stated earlier Murphy looks a likely one, Dom Barry looked alright in the limited Bays games I caught this year although I was predominantly watching for Edwards cameos, Wilson from Sturt looked good in the finals games (but then I was mostly laughing my arse off at Port losing), and if the Medya is any judge, there is a good chance that Tim Kelly from South Fremantle gets drafted this year. He's quick and runs through the midfield - could be a replacement for Charles but I suspect he goes to Fremantle given they have about 100 list spots open and have had him under their eyes all year.

Kelly sounds much more inside.

I think the number of mature aged picks made will push a lot of SA kids to the rookie draft.

Kelly will be taken before 39. Carlton and WCE are really interested, apparently

This except from a Tim Kelly recent quote has "warning" signs flashing

Already a father to two-year-old son Tykeem, Kelly and partner Caitlin are preparing to welcome twins into their rapidly expanding family.

“There are times where it does get tough and challenging, because you’ve got to juggle so much,’’ he said.

“You’ve got to go to work early hours of the morning, you’re there for eight hours, and basically straight from work you go to footy training. You don’t finish up until 7pm-7.30pm and by the time you get home it’s 8pm-8.30pm.

“Especially guys like myself who have families of their own, you don’t see your little ones.”

Firstly, Murphy would not be playing as an inside mid for us. He played last season as a small defender in the SANFL and this would be his role if he made our team. One possibility would be to use him in Luke Brown or Rory Laird's role and use these players elsewhere. Just because Luke and Rory have established a role in defence, it doesn't mean they can't play elsewhere (they were not defenders when we recruited them).

My judgement of young players is very unscientific, either I like them or I don't. Despite Murphy failing to tick almost all the boxes that recruiters love, he had me at hello.
