And AFL Draft Central's Matt Balmer who sees more APS, TAC Cup, U18 Championship games than any of the "Media" rates Bonar>Clark>Fogarty..

Opinions are like Rsoles, everyone's got one.
Personally I'd be happy enough with any one of them.

Brander is the one we've been linked with that I have some personal doubts about after seeing him play live twice this season, the first occasion he played quite well, the 2nd time he was absolutely pantsed by a guy 10cm shorter and 10kg lighter in GWV Rebel Flynn Appleby who possibly goes undrafted.

IMO Appleby will go rookie, but has the ability to be a much better player than that. Not the flashiest prospect, but would definitely be able to play a role in a 22

What about Pascoe with a later pick? Seems to have flown under the radar since his acl, but looked pretty good on exposed form. I can imagine him being there at 39, but definitely not 77 unfortunately, as someone should take the risk.

My money would be on him going undrafted given his ACL in the latter part of the season will likely result in him playing little if any competitive football in 2018. His best chance will be getting drafted as an over ager in 2019 IMO, perhaps 2018 if he comes back and shows he's fully rehabbed. His situation is similar to Vic kid Jack Roughsedge who was shaping as a likely 1st rounder last year yet went undrafted after doing an ACL early in the season.
I guess his main knock being endurance would also add to the post-acl worries. Would be a good pick up for port with a late pick IMO.

If we could grab him as a rookie and look toward best possible rehab, I'd be very keen.

The look you give when you’re as mobile as Uluru and Alex Rance is about to take another uncontested mark...

Seriously though 15 days, the draft is always held a week or two later then it really should considering all the orientation that’s required for new draftees, should be no later than the 15th.

They've drawn it out way too far. It should be on the 1st Friday night of November. Done.

Bicks

Can only imagine a club taking one of Giro or Crowden. I rate both as footballers, but you just can't have more than two undersized mids in a team. We already have Gooch and possibly Murphy (won't play mid, but pushes brown or Laird to mids) Pascoe has the height and skills base to become much more in that regard.

A year of first class rehab and filling the rookie list until he is right to play would, IMO, be the best list management decision. All that said, it means diddly squat if we aren't interested in him anyway.

AFL Player Contracts expire on October 31st, so your schedule leaves no scope for players delisting themselves and nominating for the draft.

That's a great schedule, unless of course you're the personnel that have to deal with those activities within that period.

If we're talking rookie picks Lachie Murphy is very deserving of a spot and I'd be surprised if he's not under serious consideration by Hamish and the boys after an outstanding first SANFL season for us. Other clubs might be having another look after he backed up his 2016 TAC form with a fine showing in the SANFL.

I don't think it was by accident that he landed in SA as one of our "permanent" top up players in the SANFL after surprisingly missing out in the 2016 draft after an outstanding TAC Cup season where he played mostly as an inside midfielder and saw him win the Northern Knights B & F.

Very similar in stature and playing style to Rory Laird but with more speed who also came off the rookie list.

You like watching highlight reels, watch this and tell me he's not worth a shot at the big time. You'll spot his teamate the Sig also.

I'm a huge fan of LM as well as the Sig. Those two have something special about them. How LM never got drafted is beyond me.

While they're changing everything else I'm sure they can change the contract end date too

They cannot change the education dept year 12 exam dates in all states. The Draft is held after the year 12 exams and the Draft combines are held before they start. to give the kids free air. to sit their exams.

True. Hadn't considered that. For someone who's just sat exams, I really should have thought it through.

Anyway, all the more reason to lift the draft age at least 1, if not 2 years. Eventually I would like to see players drafted in the year of their 20th birthday, with a national u20 juniors comp. These players could potentially be selected by clubs in the year of their 18th birthday (kind of a mini draft), then when the National draft comes round, clubs whom selected these players in the mini draft have the equivalent of academy rights to the player.

Biggest issue is where and who the kids play for. Ideally they would stay at home and just be 'pre-listed' by whichever club selected them. But all of that stuff is a whole other kettle of fish which I'm not paid enough to nut out.

Andy was tracking as an absolute draft steal prior to his 1st ACL though, and funnily enough without checking from my recollection he was in the top 10% for agility in his draft year. Football can be a very cruel game sometimes.
Interesting watching this years JLT series again of late ......the players look quicker & lighter than they do at seasons end .....in particular Otten was twinkle toes in the JLT, quite quick .....but by seasons end looked 3-4 kgs heavier & noticeably slower

Does the club continue to monitor weight & speed throughout the season?

I'd sooner rookie SA lads like Mitch Crowden or Stefan Giro who may both struggle get drafted and wait until 2018 to see how Pascoe comes up. He'll still likely go cheaply being an over ager and coming off an ACL if we're interested at all.
WE won't take either ......Crowden has hit his peak as a junior, and Giro is one of those dime-a-dozen type players, you can get them anytime

We'll chase undeveloped players .....physically, mentally, & game sense

IF we pick up a mature rookie (and something tells me that, if we don’t go down the DFA route, we will), who would we want to get?

Bolton and Barry are the two that have been linked to us, and seem like realistic targets. Barry provides X-Factor, and Bolton could be a Menegola-type pick-up

Barry must be a strong chance to replace a Cameron type of player .......he's definitely a risk though, but very quick left footers are gold

The risk I see is that he's very Cameron-like in his kicking. He'd bring Cameron's run and carry and electric pace, but not as much defensive pressure. He'd bring more disposals per game than 2017 Cameron too, but has a lower ceiling (he's 23, I think). We'd back him in mindset/application-wise, considering our strong culture and the fact he'd be closer to home than at Melbourne

I'm definitely warming to Barry

Possibilty for #39 ......Charlie Replacement ?

Club Subiaco/Rover FC (Geraldton)

Height 184cm

Weight 76kg

Position Small Forward

Draft Range: 3rd Round

IN SHORT
  • Excitement Machine: Regularly produces moments of magic on the field
  • Elite Mark: He won the 2017 WAFL Mark of the Year
  • Bernie Naylor Medallist: Booted 68 goals to take out the Bernie Naylor Medal
WHY PICK HIM?
Ryan is a proven goalkicker, having booted 113 goals from 39 games the past two seasons at WAFL League level. This is an average of nearly three goals per game – an elite performance by a small forward.

He is also only 21-years-old, so he is a raw prospect who has enormous potential at the top level. He often creates moments of magic in the forward half due to his speed, skill and football intelligence – attributes that are very hard to come by.

His athleticism is elite, as is his ability to take incredible marks. He won the 2017 WAFL mark of the year, but what is more impressive is that he contributed four of the five finalists.
