I’m not a fan of going in short any year let alone 2 years in a row and this being predetermined before the draft even begins. It smacks of money and list management and not talent identification.
We have a history of picking gems late, Laird, Charlie, Atkins, Hartigan etc.
I’d rather punt and get it wrong than not punt at all and potentially miss out on a talented player.

Laird, Charlie and Hartigan were all rookie picks. If we go in short on the main list it still means we can pick extra guys up on the rookie list. We didn't last year because we also had Keath and Greenwood as Cat B guys. That's not an issue this year and we won't be using a spot on a guy like Shaw who won't be playing again either.
When we grabbed those guys did we go in short on the list? I don’t think we did. If we like the talent why not secure them in the draft and don’t risk losing them in the rookie draft?
Or it’s a list management/money decision.

They're talking 5-6 rookies that are offered 1 year contracts & leaves flexibility for next years Draft .......IMO won't surprise if take a DFA

I think there's a fair chance we might end up drafting 3 guys, I suspect someone will slip to the 70's again.
But yeah I think you're spot on, saving list spots for next year. Thing is for a large part there's simply no point drafting more guys at present because there's just so few spots coming up in the best 22. We've got a bunch of quality talents just begging for opportunities, even with Lever,Cameron and Smith out.
Considering our draftees take 3-4 years before become regulars, we’ll have plenty of players we need to replace.

Would be interesting if Noah Balta slips to our pick 39. Surely we wouldnt sign a bolter after what happened with the leaver. Is there any player named Gonski available in 2018 to complete the set .

No those three cherry ripe picks which we stuffed up are currently playing AFL at a good level in their first or second year and one has actually got a premiership medal

Like EC I don't understand why we don't use all our picks as a club that has done so well with low picks it sounds like overall we will go with the minimum list numbers and 2 less in main draft.
After getting rid previously highest paid player then this year CC, Lever and Thommo although reduced last year and only Gibbs in , just don't see why especially go short on rookies with min. wages. And hope they change mind and use our 70 pick.
Also don't think Hamish done that well with high draft picks last 2 years so hope especially gets pick 12 right .
