Bicks am I silly for thinking that we could be in a position to get Edwards after our first round selection? A long way out I know, but the way I am looking at it, there are at least 5-10 names that could be top 10 and that isn't even including the academy kids.

It's really not about the picks so much with the points system now in vogue and we get a 20R% discount as a father/son unless they change the rules again.
Yes but if we don't have to use pick 18 and can use 36 and later, that would be a win.

Im still confused over their academies.
Basically they get a F/S every academy pick?
Do we get we any?

Based on what you're asking and what I think I know, the Academies and F/S are separate systems but the thing they have in common is how clubs pay (using draft picks) to select Academy & F/S players.

At present, we don't have an Academy so we can only have F/S draft prospects, whereas GWS & GC only can have Academy draft prospects because they're fairly young clubs.

Sydney & Brisbane as they have Academies, can have both Academy & F/S draft prospects because they have past players who have played enough games that their sons can be F/S draft prospects as well.

How many potential top Academy draft picks are possible depends on how many kids they can put through their system and how many are talented enough - so theoretically many.

With F/S draft picks, well that just depends on how many past players a club has who have played enough games (eg. 150 or 100 or whatever) and their sons are the potential F/S draft picks.

As to how clubs pay for Academy & F/S draft players, well it really depends on how other clubs consider they're worth. If one is considered to be worth pick 5 say by a club who has pick 5 at the start of the draft, the club with the Academy or F/S player can then decide to match that bid using points from a combination of picks (with a discount reduction of 20% of the points for pick 5 - or 186 points(?) regardless, whichever is greater).

So a club can have many Academy or F/S draft prospects but because of the draft bidding/matching points system, a club can realistically only match bids for no more than 2 or 3 first round picks (unless you're GWS )

> Do we get we any?

Yes, we're old enough to have enough past players qualifying to have F/S draft picks talented enough for us to pick as F/S (Jarman, Edwards). There have been potential F/S that we could have had but they haven't been talented enough (or even play footy) for AFC to draft as F/S's.

What they're thinking of changing is to let all clubs have Academies also so we would be like Sydney in those respects.

Draft positions are almost solely on the player's draft year performances. Some kids with unquestionable talent will remain high regardless of form or injury (2016 had Scrimshaw, SPS) while others can do the mighty Shaz plummet from being seen as a top 10 prospect to not getting drafted. Although Shaz was the most extreme I can remember, lesser case was Bampton who I rated back in the day.

Will be interesting to see where the better 5 or so Big Bodied Mids end up after this year.

Will be watching from afar and gaining interest as the season wears on

I genuinely rated Bampton back in the day, thought he could be another Luke Dunstan type. Thought he was good enough to get drafted. Obviously not

His shoulder problems have held him back in the SANFL. Might just be me being a stubborn prick, but I maintain he should have at least gone in the 50's that year. His clearence work, overhead marking and long (but not neccesarily accurate) kicking could have been developed by plenty of clubs imo. I spose a few always miss out though.

Im pretty sure round 1 and 2 draft picks are contracted for two years. What about rounds 3 and beyond, can you delist them after a single season??

All players taken in the national draft get a 2 year contract, rookies get a 1 year contract. Do you want to de-list someone already?

I've been wondering about that going a couple of players short thing. One obvious reason you'd do it is for salary cap reasons. There's no way we're doing it for that tho. Then I vaguely recalled that GWS was one other team who is going in short this year. Sydney have been short in the past I'm pretty sure, I also vaguely recall them going in short this year as well. They've both had access to academy picks, I'm beginning to think these things are related.

If Adelaide was pretty happy with its list and wanted to make the minimum delisting of 3, but also wanted to pick up a father son, then given the new rule that you can only get points for picks for spots you have vacant on your list, then having a spot or two vacant in the year prior to the pickup wouldn't be a bad idea (especially as anyone you pick up is nominally for two years). It would also help to give you a minimum of carry over points which I think is handy because the next year that penalises you early spots.

Nope, only rookies are year by year.

Every drafted player has a two year contract.

Keep your eyes on the 2 boys on the right [10] Jordan Johnston & [4] Aiden Domic this season, both excellent prospects. Jordan Johnston a medium lead up forward with the uncanny ability to hit the scoreboard big time as showed last season as an under-ager with his 7 goal haul against the talent laden Sandringham Dragons. Aiden Domic a very quick, skilled indigenous lad who played mostly half back/wing last year as an under-ager. Mail is both will play plenty of midfield minutes in their draft year 2017. Jordy will have a slow start to the season as he's had a very limited pre-season after having ankle surgery and will likely miss the first 2 or 3 games while gets up to fitness. Probably going to be a tough season for the Rebels with a lot of this year's list being under agers, one to watch there is young Thomas Berry who really shone out at last weekends TAC Teams testing [brother of 2016 1st rounder Jarrod Berry].

Sorry to intrude but just wanted to say I think Domic in particular is one to watch this year. He is a gun and has all the attributes to push into the top 10 of this years draft.

What's people's thoughts on the Big Bird, Joel Garner? I really like him, he's a very classy type who is strong overhead and is not afraid at all of getting the hard ball. Almost Wingard-like as a player.

He's a freak , needs to not drop in and out of games so much to go 1st round IMO

Super talent

Who is the Crows player in the background?

Dale Cox brother of last year's early 2nd round pick Cedric Cox has moved down from Halls Creek WA to play with the Rebels in the TAC Comp and St.Pats College in the Schools Comp this year, reported to be similarly skilled to his brother. Will be interesting to see how he develops throughout 2017. Some Time in the Weights and strengthening room might be high on the agenda.

Cousin, Bicks..I thought he was his brother too, but was corrected directly from GWV.
