Saw Powell again on weekend
Are the Fogartys related?I think you mean Jack?
Few people getting a bit carried away with Sam PP but I will admit right now I'd have taken him before the Gucc.....
Powell looks small compared to Tyson Lever in this pic, I'm over picking small mids with 1st picks, give me a bid assed mid any day...

Don't think soAre the Fogartys related?
I want Rayner at this stage but fear he will be top 10 or top 5 evenLove McPherson's dash and kick.
There's another draft board which has Garner at mid teens, at this stage I feel like he could end up a star with the skill set he has
I would love any of Rayner, Worpel, Clark, LOB or Fogarty at this stage, but they aren't going to be there at our pick if they keep going the way they are. IMO Garner seems a realistic target.I want Rayner at this stage but fear he will be top 10 or top 5 even
Looking forward to seeing McPherson and houlihan from SA
Loving the fact that Brander's in the open draft, with a greater focus on footy he could be anythingOverall the NSW talent not at same level as last few years but admittedly Brander was playing cricket
Forgot about LDU, he'll be gone by our pick too. Great skills for a big bodied midLuke Davies-Uniacke - 30 Disposals, 9 Clearances, 9 i50's, 3 r50's, 4 Tackles, 6 Marks on the weekend for the Singers..

I think he'll develop , won't be a bust and has some exciting athletic traitsI think alot of the draft watchers didnt and dont agree with the Gallucci pick tbh, just dont find it neccessary to go full Marty. Who knows, he could develop.
Role player sounds a bit harsh, IMO he ends up somewhere in the 'good'-'very good' rangeI think he'll develop , won't be a bust and has some exciting athletic traits
Just needs time to work on his football skill set but he will get there , a role player rather than a star
Haha fair enough - a v good role playerRole player sounds a bit harsh, IMO he ends up somewhere in the 'good'-'very good' range
Agree with half back. Considering his leap he could be a more than handy HBF providing intercept marking and ball use on both sides of his body.I just don't see him as a mid personally, wing/half back/half forward maybe. Of those I favour half back with his express pace and hopefully he develops run and carry.
At his size he'll need to have an absolutely amazing 2017 to be in contention for the 1st round, so many "big" mids that look outstanding prospects in this draft and more than the usual number of outstanding tall prospects also.
Teams announced for the NAB AFL Academy's 20th anniversary celebration match ... Surprisingly Jackson Edwards didn't get a guernsey by the looks? ...
My thoughts on Adelaide’s draft as a whole...
Pick 8 (Ended up as Pick 9 due to us bidding on T Thomas): it was a genuine surprise to me that we bid on Thomas here. North were probably always going to match of course, but I don’t think they could quite believe that a bid was coming in for Thomas before Blakey. Hamish is certainly hot on Tasmanians!
Equally surprising was that we then didn’t follow up the Thomas bid with a bid on Blakey. Honestly found that pretty bizarre. There was a 100% chance that Sydney were going to match it. At pick 9, they were already flopping it out that he’d lasted that long. Very strange stuff, but perhaps there are secret promises between clubs that take place for reasons not known to us that would explain scenarios like this.
This brings us to our actual selection of Chayce Jones. I strongly suspect that Hamish and co would have been pretty sure that the top 7 was going to go as it did (maybe not in that order, and maybe with a bid on Blakey thrown in, but those 7 players looked the most likely 7), and as a result, it appears as though we had perhaps been agonising over Jones vs Caldwell for the previous week or two. We certainly interviewed Caldwell multiple times according to numerous sources.
One thing that is clear in our drafting is that if it’s a line ball decision like that, we tend to try to go for the intelligent, high-character types “from a good family”. Jones certainly appears to fit that bill. Not a sexy pick by any means, but the comments by Hamish in the lead-up to the draft about “wanting to find another Rory Sloane” may well have been a direct reference to Jones I suspect. Looks like a “can’t-miss” prospect to me. My only concern is that it is unclear whether or not there is “superstar” potential here (I think Caldwell has this), but I’m willing to back Hamish in. Maybe the Caldwell hamstring issues were a factor. Maybe there were “go-home” fears surrounding Caldwell. All in all, I’m happy with the pick and certainly would not have been tempted to go with anyone other than Caldwell or Jones here, all things considered.
Pick 13 (ended up as Pick 16): That brings us to our next pick. Now, I could be wrong, but something tells me we were banking on ONE of Hately, Butters or Clark slipping through here. I believe all 3 would have been higher on our board than McHenry. I also feel that we may have been genuinely surprised / disappointed that none of those 3 snuck through, especially considering the strong links in the lead-up to the draft to one of Geelong or GWS pulling the trigger on Riley Collier-Dawkins with Picks in this range.
The way it panned out, Port took Butters (somewhat surprising that they passed on Clark), GWS took Hately (RCD seemed equally or perhaps a touch more likely), and the Cats took Clark (RCD seemed equally or slightly more likely), which clearly left us with McHenry at the top of our board.
For me, I’d love to know why RCD wasn’t selected by us here. A 193ish cm midfielder, with speed, courage and the ability to play on the inside and outside just seemed like a dream come true to me here. Has been described as a cross between P Cripps and Bont - history will decide if those comparisons are fanciful, but he’s certainly a unique prospect, and one that I was excited about. Perhaps there were “go-home” fears here? Not sure. I was pretty surprised that he was still there, and then more surprised when we didn’t take him though.
Of the remaining guys on the board not named RCD, I am fine with McHenry. I think he definitely would’ve gotten through to our next pick, but we probably already knew we were trading it by then. The big question for me is, would he also have gotten through to pick 21 (which ended up becoming Pick 24)? If the answer is yes, I’m not overly enthused with the decision to take him as the 13th best non-academy / father/son player in this draft (16th overall). He’s certainly always going to give his all, and he’ll be an elite pressure small in the AFL. But at 178cm, and with 20m sprint times that are disturbingly slow for someone of his height, I’m not sure I love spending a pick this high on him, especially when Collier-Dawkins was staring us in the face.
If Collier-Dawkins was off our list due to flight-risk concerns (or for some other reason), I probably personally would have preferred one of Sam Sturt or Xavier Duursma to McHenry. I certainly don’t hate the pick, but I just would have thought that all 3 of the guys I’ve mentioned as alternatives may be more valuable players in 3-5 years time than McHenry, that’s all.
Pick 16 (ended up as Pick 19): The pick swap with Carlton that then took place makes me even more certain that Collier-Dawkins had possibly been struck off our draft list for some reason. Seems obvious that we were just never calling out his name, as you’d think this pick swap doesn’t take place if we had any interest in RCD, who was still on the board here.
As for the swap itself, it’s certainly ballsy. Who knows, maybe if one of Butters, Clark or Hately slipped through to our 2nd Pick, and then McHenry was still there at 19, this swap possibly never happens? Swings and roundabouts.
I like the swap, and I like the extra spice it will add to both ours and Carlton’s finishing positions in 2019. If we make the top 6 and they finish bottom 4, it’s a win IMO. Top 4 and bottom 2 is the dream, but probably unlikely.
Pick 21 (Ended up as Pick 24, which we traded down to pick 28, which then became Pick 29 due to a bid on R West, which then became Pick 30 once we bid on W Kelly): Then we had the 2nd Pick on Day 2, and traded down a few spots, picking up Carlton’s 2019 2nd rounder vis GWS in the process. GWS clearly couldn’t believe their eyes when Ian Hill was available, and were happy to pay what most on the surface would consider “overs” to select a guy they probably rated in the mid-teens (he certainly fills a need for them too).
I listen to interviews very carefully and have a degree in Behavioural Science, and I can assure you that we were NOT going to draft Will Hamill at Pick 24, had we not traded down to 28. Hamish glossed over this and said we were “considering” Hamill at 24. He did NOT say we were taking him at 24, and he HAS said similar things in the past as he’s a very straight shooter. While I don’t doubt that Hamill was in the frame here, I’d bet my left nut that one, or maybe even 2 guys we had slightly above Hamill were taken between 24-27 (Ian Hill would not have been one of them). The question is “who would we have taken?”
The answer, in my opinion, is Tom Sparrow. I don’t have much to base this claim on other than “considering we were willing to trade the pick down 4 spots, it is logical that there would have been a few guys that we rated pretty equally here, in which case we would take the local lad”, but I can say with almost 100% certainty that it wouldn’t have been Hamill if we stayed at 24. It will be very interesting to see how these players develop.
Regardless of the above, I actually love the Hamill Pick. Speed, courage, a reliable left boot, a real sense of tenacity and a thirst for the contest are what I see in Hamill’s highlights. Getting a Pick in the 20-30 range next year along with Hamill here was a big win. It must have been tempting to go with Bailey Williams or Curtis Taylor here (it is well known that we interviewed both of them on numerous occasions), but I’m happy with what we did.
Everything after this, including the rookie draft, is probably pointless to even comment on. Sholl looks an honest trier without star potential. Butts could be a handy addition, especially considering our virtually unparalleled record of developing key defenders. Hunter made strides last year so it made sense to bring him back. It also made sense to take another ruckman (Strachan), because Jenkins isn’t a ruckman, Jacobs is nearly finished, and O’Brien has proven to be pretty injury-prone.
All in all, it felt to me like a solid draft. Our live trades were probably the highlight for me, in addition to the selection of Hamill. The selection of 178cm McHenry who has not played much in the midfield and doesn’t have impressive 20m sprint numbers, as the 13th best non-academy player in the draft is the biggest question mark for me - having said that, I would have been PUMPED to get him with Pick 21, so it’s not like I see it as a terrible selection - just a reach considering RCD, Sturt and Duursma were all there. Jones will forever be compared to Caldwell. Ours and Carlton’s finishing positions in 2019 will be a massive talking point.
Grade: B
Was just going ask about ruck Prospects in this year Draft.A little known SA name Ruben Flinn a giant Ruckman who showed glimpses of real ability last season is one to keep an eye on with a view to the 2018 draft, reckon it's time we took on a development young Ruck.
They basically look like reserves teams. Petruccelle and Cerra would be good to watch, thoughTeams named for the two trial games for Vic Metro and Vic Country Selection for this year's U18 Championships to be played at Carlton's home ground Ikon Park tomorrow.
