List Mgmt. 2017 Draft Needs...

Saw him live a couple of times this year , plays a very outside style of game...wouldn't be top of my list I like guys that can win their own ball consistently.

I do feel though maybe we are set at inside mid and need more class on the outside? Can never have enough elite legs, not saying this kid is the answer but food for thought.

I prefer those types of players too, but we are pretty set for the next few years with the Crouch boys, Sloane and Gibbs. Wouldn't mind bringing in a kid who could get a game next year and you would think that would only be on the outside. But I hope we go for a contested ball winner in the 2018 draft where the options are better.

What I like about O'Brien are his pace, his kicking accuracy over 40m and that he is a left footer. He also apparently ticks the decision maker box, but I am thinking all of these top 20 guys must be ticking that. Guy seems to have a decent kick on him for his age.

Doesn't Knightmare have a very good record of picking the draft order in the first round? If so, Fogarty is still going at 6?

If we go by his list we will get Lochie Obrien. What worries me is the elite kick tag :). We just sent our previous elite kicker to the Gold Coast hahaha. But seriously, he sounds good. Sounds like he did well as a bottom-ager, which I think is always a plus because he is going up against bigger bodies than his.

12. Lochie O'Brien (VIC)

Best position: Outside midfield
Height, weight: 184cm, 75kg
Recruited from: Bendigo Pioneers
Projected draft range: First round
Similar to: Mitch Duncan
September Ranking: Not ranked
Rationale: Arguably the best kick in the draft and one of the best outside runners. Reclaims top 20 position on the back of strong performance in Under-18 All Star game. Performances this season have been below expectation due to niggling injuries which has seen his draft stocks drop over past 12 months, but deserves benefit of the doubt based on the damage he did at his best in 2016.
Strengths:
Arguably the best kick in the draft with his precision, variety of kicks he can execute, hurt factor and dual sided kicking
Lowers eyes
Vision
Decision
Making
Line breaker
Acceleration
Evasiveness
Agility
Overhead marking
Production
Versatility to play midfield or on flanks at either end
Weaknesses:
Stoppage work
Contested ball winning
Consistency

I'm really not a fan of outside players with early picks tbh. If they can't win their own ball, then they really aren't worth it unless they are exceptional. Milera is still to come in, and at this point in time he is plenty silky and more than outside enough.

Fair point about Milera. But still, you have to take what is available. At pick 12 in a shallow draft you would think there might not be any really good ball winners left. So I take it we are hoping for DF to slip to 12? Worpel who is next on Knightmare's ranking seems to fit the bill, so maybe we will go with him.

Knightmare’s assessments are some of the most detailed around. But this far out he hasn’t put together a prediction, more just an assessment of the top 20-30 players.

If we get one of Constable/Higgins/Clark/Bonar at pick 12 (one of them will almost certainly be available), I'll be very happy.

As for 39, one of McPherson or Will Walker (if they slide) are my choices

Got to go for talent in the draft, needs have been filled this trade period. Fogarty would be the dream pick but it's more realistically gonna be a Hunter Clark or Lochie O'Brien who on talent are top 10 prospects. The only reason they aren't rated as highly as other prospects is because theyve had underwhelming seasons to what they're talent suggests. Another player I would have a look at is Connor Ballenden who would be a nice player to 1) bid on to force Brisbane's hand 2) If they don't match, he is a nice player who we could develop as a key position utility

That was updated October 10th, so it wouldn't change much. I think it was his that I was comparing phantom picks with actuals last year and he did really well to predict the first round. I think he had us taking Berry instead of Gallucci so maybe Hamish sees things quite differently.

IMO, from pick 13 the talent really drops off in this draft. May as well pick for upside IMO, and if Fogarty is at 12, I doubt you could go past him. It's a risk, but man, he will be the best from the draft if his midfield transition is what it appeared to be tracking toward last year.

I guess it depends who's rankings you're looking at. The page over, I would take Hunter-Clarke well before any of the prospects listed after him. If Fogarty isn't there, someone from the top 11 needs to be displaced. That's who we take IMO.

I was amazed when I saw Aiden Bonar for the first time live here a couple of months ago so much so I posted on here immediately I got home long before everyone jumped on the Bonar bandwagon, I see him as at least the equal of Fogarty in all aspects, size, strength, booming kick and quicker and more athletically gifted and possibly even more upside given he's played so little football over the last two years, he may be available too.

Another we might look at IMO is Noah Balta, for raw ability he's right up there with anyone in the top ten, amazing athletically and poorly handled by his TAC Cup coach IMO having not been allowed to settle in one position all year playing CHB, CHF and Ruck at different times although there's no way he'll play Ruck at AFL level. Probably a risk/reward pick but if it comes off the pay off would be huge.
Very true on Bonar bicks. Although I think he is almost certainly top 10 now, and he would almost have to be taken for Fogarty to slide to 12. I think the Saints will go Bonar personally, potentially even collingwood may go early on him with the aim to develop him fwd.

Haven't watched enough of Balta (although I've only seen all Vic draftees online) to make any judgement.

Lol jumped on the bonar bandwagon.. either him or fogarty

Bonar was one nobody's draft boards 2 months ago, the only draft guy that had even mentioned his name was Matt Balmer and he was mainly going off what other kids like LukeDavies-Unakie and Hunter Clark that had grown up playing junior footy with him had told him of his talents, one viewing live was all it took to sell me on him, the potential and upside is limitless if he stays fit. He's a beast but unfortunately he may be gone before pick 12 even with his previous knee recos.
He's had 2 recos cause the first one didn't go so well? If he is what is being described.. Its a no brainer. Sounds like lever.. But maybe clubs aren't so scared of injuries no more after stringer Burton and lever.

Then again cockatoo want on people's radar till late right?

I reckon saints will take a punt with pick 8
