Samo's 2016 highlights were p.good and (correct me if I'm wrong) he had a strong all star game. Fogarty's most memorable 2017 highlight is a failed fend-off.

Yeah, but if Rankine didn’t play a game next year I still think most clubs would be desperate to get him. Wasn’t there talk that if Fogarty had played a decent part of the year he’d have been close to a lock for pick 1? Fogarty reminds me of Ryan Burton who might have gone pick 1 or 2 couple of years back if not fir injury.

Look at nearly every premiership won and look how big of a role HBF's have played. Also if we continue to play in our back half then they will play as big of a role in our game plan as anyone.
Yep Houli wasn't a 1st rounder.
If we had a midfield that held its own (seem to remember we are one of the worst clearance teams in the comp)we wouldn't be playing in our back half as much. We need to win more contests. Not sure Richards will help with this compared to the midfield options at 10. Also need to kick goals which is a bigger priority (not sure there are great options though).

O'Brien has an incredible left peg but he looks like a deer in headlights when it comes to the contest, has a real DVR feel about him. SOS must pick a genuine inside and outside midfielder here.

Drafting an pure outside midfielder in the hopes that their skills will translate to AFL rarely works.

You're better of picking a player who has shown something both on the inside and outside as you say.

For instance, I can see Clark being an 'outside' midfielder at AFL level but at the same time he's shown more than enough on the inside this year. Fisher is another example, was an in and under midfielder prior to being drafted but it's likely that he won't become an inside midfielder.

It’s gotten to the point where l think we should call this thread,
“2017 Draft - Pick 10 - We have no idea who we are taking”
Thats the beauty of this draft though. Previous years around this time you can almost nail the top 10 in order. The only real certainly to me is LDU goes 1 or 3. Rayner could slip to us, Fogarty could go 4 which means Cerra slips. Then you have Stephenson, Bonar and Naughton who could go anywhere in the 1st round as high as pick 5 with question marks over them or being pick based on club needs. Its gonna be all over the shop and quite an interesting draft to watch. I think we are actually very well poised at pick 10 to get some absolute talent and intrigues me more than our pick 3.

It certainly helps that there is no expansion club rorting of the draft going on as well. That and the ludicrous academy system , virtually nailed half the top 10 to certain clubs

We do also have the new Irish recruit who will likely fill a similar role.

But that also being said with the premiership being won by a small forward line, do we need 3-4 small defenders in the best 22 every week?

I think the call on Richards would be if they see him as more than just a running HB which sounds possible.
If Richards can beat his man then that is exactly what we need. We get carved up by small forwards.

It doesn't matter where someone was taken though. If they are worth pick 10 then they are worth pick 10. It's like saying you wouldn't take Rance in the top 10 because you can get defenders later and he wasn't a top ten pick.
I hope like hell the best available player is an inside/outside Mid with great skills and quick but chances are if a player fits that description then they are already gone because that's what everyone is looking for. Personally I just hope we don't reach for a player and if that means we end up with a HBF then so be it, they are becoming more and more important.

I have no problem with the generous concessions given to the expansion clubs.
