Doesn't link up as well as Gaff does. Is more of a receiver, but does it well.

I think there is too much talk about trying to get in instant midfielders with virtually every selection. That tactic just doesn't work.

Agree, we should take the player with most X factor at 3 and disrupt the projection thereafter.
A quality midfielder should be there at 10, either or Cerra , Brayshaw, Higgins, LDU a few options.

I like Constable a lot , just concerned that we will already have 2 inside mids with Cripps and Kennedy .

Sydney are the side they are due to winning contested ball. Josh Kennedy and co are all inside players.

Richmond had Cotchin, Martin, Prestia who can all win the hard ball. Adelaide have no outside run but are hard at it on the inside. Doggies last year also focussed on contested work with no outside run barring JJ.

Your mids should be winning the ball in contests. Thats their number one job. You only really need 1 or 2 outside players in the starting 18.

I don't think any of those other teams you mentioned have anyone quite as slow as Cripps. Cotchin and Martin are actually quite quick and can be damaging on the outside as well as inside.

Having said that i have no idea what kind of speed Constable has and if he really is that slow or it's exaggerated.

He's actually pretty quick. He doesnt have a quick burst of pace like Pickett, but once he gets going he's no slouch. He's more than capable of using his size to burst out of packs and brush of tackles as well.



His endurance is much better since he scored a 13.2 on the beep at the combine. He worked on it really hard.

Higgins seems to be getting a lot of love for pick 10, he does have some good traits, particularly like he's kicking inside forward 50, although he doesn't have a long kick and 40-45m is around his limit and does seem to be a real competitor, but unfortunately he does have some pretty serious limitations, a 175cm small forward really needs to have a point of difference, good leg speed to apply defensive pressure, be a freak at snap shots or a sharp shooter at goal, Higgins doesn't really have anything like that in his bag of tricks, more of Jack of all trades master of none type player, one of the players I'd be disappointed if we drafted at pick 10.

Not sure I follow the logic. There's not a lot of 195cm mids for a reason, they tend to struggle to run out games. I don't know that the Dalhaus, Daniel, Prestia, Graham, Rioli sub 180cm players slowed down that much in the last couple of grand finals.

You can tell he is a real competitor and is so determined to make a AFL career he dropped out of school to focus solely on football IIRC, this is also a concern for me, has been training full time all year, could this mean he closer to his ceiling as a player and has less development left in him.

I'm just not seeing many traits that would help him transtion into a midfielder at AFL level, look at someone like Fisher, yes he is only 176cm, but he has genuine leg speed, is evasiveness, has very clean hands, a lovely left boot and very good decision making.

Yeah I'm sure there's been plenty of over-developed juniors who go on to be big busts. But I've got a comparison to Joel Selwood stuck in my head (since he's the only other junior I can remember who was this dedicated at this age), and so I'm completely on board the Higgins bandwagon.

There actually was similar talk about Joel on bigfooty at the time:

Selwood is an interesting midfielder. He isn’t first dibbs or an outside receiver. Extremely footy smart, natural footballer but kicking is scrappy and isn’t quick by any means

The selwood concern is more than it seems he can only play as a inside mid, reportedly lacks pace and is an average kick.

Selwood is a high-possession running player similar to Shane Crawford. He doesn’t have pure leg speed and his kicking can be hit and miss. He gets teams going forward and can be sharp in tight spaces. Very good a metre or two off the pack. A genuine playmaker and a good choice to put in the centre between wingmen Ellis and Muston. A year-long knee injury may see his value drop, but not too far. Has good leadership qualities.

I guess the big difference is that Selwood was always going to be able to become a mid, whereas for Higgins it's still up in the air.

Fisher does appear to have better agility and speed than Higgins. The point of difference l see with Higgins, as opposed to your usual small forward, is he looks far stronger. He is strongly built and handles himself far better with contested ball. I think he will be a better contested ball player than fisher. Maybe he ends up being a player similar to Tom mitchell or possibly Prestia.

I’m actually interested to see how he turns out. I have some doubts as well but these types of small players(sub 180cm not overly quick) have transitioned well to afl in recent years. There short limbs/levers and low centre of gravity mean they are very clean at gathering and disposing of the ball and when combined with good decision making they become dangerous in broken/loose ball play.

l think there has been a change in the types of players succeeding in the afl in recent years. 5 years ago you needed big contested players to deal with continual stoppages. Now l see a team like Gws, not only having too many talls but too many big midfield types.
