2017 Draft - Pick 30

Jackson Ross is my first choice for pick 30, plays that 6th/high half forward role that can be tricky and also push up to the midfield/wing. From a tennis background, athletic with huge potential. Add 10-15kg long term and he could be anything.

Roughly averages 20 disposals and 2 goals per game for Eastern & Haileybury. Add mids at pick 3 & 10 and we are well on our way for 2020 & beyond.
The scuttlebutt was we were looking at him for pick 54, which we no longer have. He's way too raw to consider at #30.

Depending on what we do with the earlier picks (Rayner/Constable), Zac Bailey is one I'd be pretty happy to get. Go watch the last Allies game where they beat Vic Metro, he was outstanding.

Arr0w TheSmokingGun have you seen much of him this year?? The U18 champs were'nt really kind to anyone except Rayner in terms of consistent performance

Others I like at this spot - Stoddard, Ross, McPherson, Moore...really confident we could land a good one here.

Then we can spend 70's/R1 on Roughsedge and Scott Jones

Overall - Rayner (fwd/mid) Constable (utility) Bailey (in & out mid), Roughsedge (mid) Jones (Ruck)....job done SOS :p

Any reason why you keep tagging me on this board The Dominator7?

I like Bailey, tough at it and has burst speed. Does kick the occasional floater over distance, but his action is sound, that will be ironed out a little more when in a AFL system. Has a bit of Will Hayward about him

Like the mix of selections

I had a look at some of the footage of Bailey and he looks like he would be a good pickup, a kid who could really grow once in the system.

He looks like a balanced midfielder, having the ability to both win the contested footy and burst out of the pack with the ball. Something else I noticed was his ability to sort of cleverly weave through congested areas but it does seem like he has the propensity to overdo it at times and then getting caught with the ball. Also, I can't figure out if he's quick, so to speak, because it doesn't look like his legs are moving all that fast. I suppose all that matters is that he's making the most of what he has.

As has been noted, his kicking looks a little inconsistent at times but his ball drop doesn't seem to bad.

I also quite like his body shape, looks like someone who could easily put size on. I'm trying to think of a player comparison, it's on the tip of my tongue though.

Spargo would be a steal at 30 and would not pass him up. I know he has had some minir injuries but still rate him as a latish 1st. Also rate Garner as a late 1st

I just can't see SOS selecting Worpel, his disposal is poor
How does Worpels kicking compare to Matt Crouch in his draft year? IIRC there were concerns over his kicking as well.

Spargo would be going higher had it not been for injuries, had a very good year as a bottom age player, which is often indicative of the players ability to compete against bigger and more mature bodies. SOS has shown he isn't afraid of using picks of kids who did well as bottom age players. If he slips to 30, I'd say he's bang on to come to us.

Have the stats at home, happy to post them later, but you just have to watch full games to see that he does butcher the ball on regular occasions. Unfortunately I think I am tougher than most when rating disposal and you just have to review game day posts and see the frustration of many posters when it comes to the likes of Kerriage, who I rate better than Worpel when disposing the ball by foot or hand. Having said I that, I do admire his work-rate, tackling, toughness and willingness to stay involved. If we are looking at the type of player Worpel is, I believe there are better options, such as Spargo(if he lasts), North or Hayden

I'd be interested to see the stats, but I'm not too worried by what they say - we all know they can be misleading.

What's his split between contested and uncontested? If he's getting most of his touches in contested situations it probably stands to reason that his efficiency is lower than many of his peers.

There are many good to excellent mids in the game today who you could make a case for having shoddy disposal at best, and many of those play a more inside role. Skill level is obviously important but I prefer to look at the overall picture in terms of what they bring to the table.

If we choose not to go down the Worpel path I won't be too fussed, but if he's there at 30 I'd think we wouldn't simply put a line through him because he doesn't have elite disposal skills - especially if we prioritize ball use with our two earlier selections.

Richmond didn't win the flag this year on the back of being the most skilled team in the competition. The intangibles you mentioned matter.

Worpel's TAC Cup season

Wouldn't be wasting picks on a ruck, they are plentiful and pretty much proven you can get a decent one through trades anyway. Pick 30 is still decent. You're probably thinking of a midfielder with some upside or running halfback/wing. There are usually decent players around this number who have potential but have had injuries, bottom age, mostly played in a peripheral position. Think we are pretty right for talls.

I still think we need half back/wings even though we are ok at the moment. This is the area where the big runners play and we do rotate our half backs but having guys like White among those rotations is not inspiring. Thomas and Simpson on the later part of their careers. Get a running machine who has good game sense and is a great kick.

When I posed Worpel @ 30 to Knightmare on his Phantom Draft thread and whether or not his kicking skills have been a big knock on him...

Worpel is seen as likely to fall somewhere in the 40s or thereabouts. He's much better than that though and can be a Jack Graham level value pick. He's a long and sometimes good kick, but he's not always reliable. It's less a pressure/decision making thing as much as execution most of the time. So he's one even at pick 30, while he probably doesn't go that high, he deserves consideration with his ready-to-go game.

Garner would be good at 30. I have him slotted at 19 for Gold Coasts pick. I am hoping that they finally start drafting a touch of character above a touch of talent. I feel that should be a precedence until they establish themselves as a Club first and foremost. But Scotty Clayton is still there so flashy talent it will probably be.

I wanted them to Pick Jarrod Berry at 9 last year for the same reason.

Agree. Vote #30 Big Bird!

Would like someone like Ling or Richards to get through to this pick, both have electric speed and good ball use.
L Fogarty is pretty handy too, had a very consistent year, seems to hit the score board regularly, has kinda gone under the radar due to being sub 180cm.
