All this excitement on pick 16. Apart from Douglas it hasn't been a real happy hunting ground. May as well take the HUGE punt on Ryan just to keep me amused. Go on Dal....I dare ya
2002-2014 pick 16's. Didn't go more recent as unfair due to limited time in system.

Stephen Gilham Kade Simpson, Will Minson, Tom Lonergan
Josh Willoughby David Mundy, Jed Adcock, Sam Fisher
Adam Pattison Mark LeCras, Nathan Van Berlo, James Gwilt
Richard Douglas Andrew Swallow, Joel Patfull, Matthew Stokes
Mitch Brown Robbie Gray, Justin Westhoff, Shane Edwards
Matthew Lobbe Harry Taylor, Alex Rance, Callan Ward
Ryan Schoenmakers David Zaharakis, Dan Hannebery, Rory Sloane
Jasper McMillan-Pittard Nat Fyfe, Jack Gunston, Max Gawn
Ben Jacobs Luke Parker, Isaac Smith, Tom McDonald
Tom Sheridan Bradley Hill, Lachie Neale, Tory Dickson
Jackson Thurlow Brodie Grundy (...not much else that year)
Darcy Lang Luke Dunstan, Matt Crouch, Zach Merrett
Sam Durdin Toby McLean, Mitch McGovern, Caleb Daniel
Haha, nice try.

Still available at pick 16 were the ones shown in red (I only went for 3 but could have gone for more in most years). So it's not that there weren't any good players available at 16, it's just that the recruiters who had pick 16 weren't good enough to find them.

Billy Gowers at 82 I'm hearing
His conversion around goals has Bulldogs written all over it, there
would be a long list of matures i would take before Gowers to be
honest. I think we could get a better player in the short term at
pick 82 likely to be lower than we will get at picks 9 & 16.

You are probably right. But, *sigh* that Ryan can play.
Liam Ryan has a great highlights package, but that 6 foot full
forward is something you expect to see at local footy.
Collingwood took Kayle Kirby last year who had similar issues
with his endurance, but a similar type in that you would pay
to watch him in full flight. Kayle killed it in the VFL, but
sometimes as you rise in standards those roles are defined
a little differently.

I’ve never really understood the fascination with these lists of who went at whatever exact pick

Same here. They pop up every year.

One thing that strikes me about looking at past years' draft selections is that for all the frothing at how good various players look from their phantom write-ups and video clips there are seldom more than a dozen outstanding players in any year, sometimes less. There's a large number of flops from each draft, some taken quite high in the order.

For all the combines, monitoring through the junior years, testing, interviewing and profiling it's still an inexact science. Or should that be an "art"?

On the Norf board someone mentioned it and it's been confirmed by a couple different people now. He's been taking medication for a while now by the sound of it and it hasn't really been affecting his performances.

Eagleton and Hayes are a couple names that have had good careers with a heart condition so he'll probably be fine.
It depends what the condition is - Eagleton had a tachycardia issue which you can fix in a week with another week of rest afterwards with a simple procedure (ablation) performed under local anesthetic (I have SVT so know all about it). You can also take medication for it which can make you drowsy.

"Heart issue" sounds serious but there are actually quite a few minor heart issues which would have no effect on playing or exercise.

General point for the discussion on pick 82 prospects.

Pick 82 might be closer to pick 70 or even pick 60 when it comes down to genuine draft choices and passes and rookie promotions are left out. The change in the rules on playing rookies will make it even more interesting. It could promote more passes on late picks. A Carlton supporting mate told me that they are going to go 1 or 2 short on the list and use rookies.
GWS actually did this for 2017, went one short on the main list and put Patfull on their rookie list even though he retired to honour his contract.

Didn't Collingwood do it a couple of years ago too? Went one short on the main list and took an extra rookie.

We did it with Brett Goodes one year too.

Matt Guelfi I like at pick 82 (currently 79 pre-rookie upgrades and passes).
Simply because he's played utility WAFL all year, been rejected twice at the draft, has come back fitter every time and you just know he's a Boyd/Cross/Picken type on the training track.

For mine late picks/rookie picks are made for these types and they are the guys we've had success with in the past.

Knightmare mentioned Zac Bailey has come from nowhere to bolt up the draft board in recent months, fits Dalrymple's criteria and seems like he could be one we look at with pick 16. Think Wiz has mentioned him a bit here also.

I'm big on him. Great line breaker and is tough.
Interestingly, KM has us taking Coffield and Higgins with our two early picks in his Nov phantom, released yesterday. While we need a small forward, i'm not really sold on Higgins just yet. Considering we are fairly well stacked for KPP, next year while other clubs are going for them, we can look at mids/small forwards. Just shows how good our list is right now, when we only take the minimum three picks to the draft, would nearly expect similar next year as well.

Coffield yeah.

Higgins meh. Would rather L.Fogarty or Bailey.

Obviously these figures can be skewed by injury, age profile
and list position not to mention players drafted to play the
games straight away such as Drew Petrie. It does show
the minimal effect of the draft in relation to games played
for the year in total.

Whichever way it falls I see saints pinching the player we really want just cause

Only thing with Bailey is he doesn't really hit the scoreboard much looking at his stats from this year and his kicking can be a bit off at times which has been noted by a few different people. I certainly won't be unhappy if we select him as he would gives us some pace in the midfield and he's a good character by all reports. I have a few more higher up on my preference list though.

Speaking of Higgins, I'd take him over Bailey/Fogarty at 16 for sure. He's better around goals then those two and I think his lack of pace is overplayed (I'm guilty of that also). He doesn't look slow out on the field and he has tested below 3 seconds over 20m before. He may have been carrying an injury at the combine, he did miss the finals and All Stars game through injury.
