Agree would love Murphy at 16. Would be great if the cards fell that way.

I suppose Naughton would pretty quickly free up Adams or our Premiership CHF Z Cordy to play at FF, CHF or as general forwards. So, we would have Trengove and (soon enough) Naughton as KPB's. Young, Collins and Roberts would be depth or getting a game if we required 3 tall backs. Redpath would also be under further pressure to get a game if Adams and Cordy are in contention for a tall forward berth.

Interesting. If this happens, it basically says we don't value one or more of Young, Collins and Roberts.

The more I look at it, T Boyd's long term future is as our #1 ruckman.
Young played forward as a junior and was recruited as a forward moved back mainly out of necessity

Since I know nothing about anyone in this draft, what's the deal with Stephenson's heart condition? Is it another Josh Toy scenario?

Is Aaron naughton seriously a top 10 prospect?? Can someone sell me on him please??
Based on highlights -
Tall quick athletic
Strong contested mark, good one on one, good intercept
Calm under pressure
Evasive
Finds quality targets
Odd loopy kicking action but hits targets and can kick 50 meters
Looks a natural footballer
Has played well against men

There is nothing to not like really - except we have a bit too many tall defenders.

He's not my first choice or second for that matter however I can see the appeal Fronk.... Can see him fitting in real well into our backline...

From all reports its minor and hasn't troubled him in the past (was only just picked up). Clubs are being cautious over the possible effects that could show there face at any point in the future. Im sure given previous cases club doctors will do their due diligence.

Anyone have any read on what obscure South Australian we're going to take later on?

Agree, if selected I can see one or two of our backs becoming swing men, in fact I think it will happen regardless.. Adams, Cordy, Trengove can all play at the other end? Moz, Roberts in there last year (Roberts for sure), question marks over Collins, Woods hammy concerns.... Very interesting to see how it all plays out.

Cordy and Adams are defenders. Play them as defenders. What’s the point in drafting a defender just so we can play some of our existing defenders forward?

Just took a look at one game footage of Naughton. His kicking may look a bit awkward but he is definitely not a one sided player. He kicks it with his left, he kicks it with his right. That is a positive.

He played forward in the VFL early on, but wasn't very good.
It was also in his first month or so in an afl system. He developed scarily fast over the year and has bearly hit puberty. I predict he will have the path of players of old that play their first year or 2 in defence and learn running patterns etc and then move forward, barry hall is the first to come to mind of recent history.

Cordy was our Premiership CHF, whole final series, actually. He was a key ingredient - hidden but a key ingredient imo. Like chilli flakes in a curry.

As many have said previously. He is a great prospect and is already competing against men but we have an abundance of young developing kpp and i think it just wouldnt work balance wise given our deficiencies in other areas (speed, ball use).

I am aware of that. He played a role but it’s not his best position. Imagine if you actually had a genuine CHF playing there who could actually kick goals.

I see cordy playing as our future 3rd defender for many years to come. We have alot of defenders but none like him. Once morris retires he should slip nicely into that role.
This year he stood up and played on the best defenders most weeks and done himself proud often giving up 10cm and 15+kg

Have any past drafted players that in their draft year had an ordinary or even bad kick ever become a decent kick of the ball?

I've read Harry Taylor and Rance were poor kicks when first in the system.

Maybe, usually you can see some small signs though. When he played down back, he looked much better. That's part of the reason why I don't want Naughton.

What incentive do essendon have to prompt Rayner to publicly state his preference when they don't have a pick anywhere near his range? I could understand with kavanagh but this year? I'd have thought they'd be better off letting him go to Brisbane than settle at a different club in vic.
It's a fair point in this case. I was forgetting they have burned their high draft picks and don't come in until #48.

One thing to consider though is that if a rival club uses a very high pick (say top 4) on said player they are more likely to kick up a stink and do everything they can to keep that player or extract max value if he wants to go. That's partly to protect a genuine asset and partly to save face for having risked a high draft pick and lost out. So if a player gives a strong indication that he is a serious flight risk (even for Vic clubs) he could slip to a lower pick and thus could be easier for Essendon to prise out of his drafted club in two years time. However I'm drawing a fairly long bow there. Most clubs would back themselves to be able to brainwash the draftee to want to stay with his new club. (Qld and NSW destinations are a slightly different matter)

It's a fine line isn't it where a player says "I'd absolutely love to be drafted by <favourite club>". At what point is it just a kid being candid about his romantic notions in relation to the club he barracks for and at what point is there a sinister sub-text that says "pick me at your own risk"? I may be biased on this but it sounded to me like Coffield was just being romantic and was not issuing a veiled warning. Not sure about Rayner.

He got a few, but I take your point.

Well, maybe Cordy is the heir apparent for Morris's BP position. Fair enough. Takes him out of the congestion for a KPB position. If Adams goes forward (much as I like his work at FB), then it is still Young, Collins and Roberts in the KPB depth category. You need at least 2 fit every week. Perhaps all in all, not completely over loaded for KPB's if we took Naughton at pick 9.
