I really don't rate any of their inside midfielders so if they take Coffield and another flanker I wouldn't be mad. B grade inside midfields don't win finals.

I like them ignoring the inside players.... keep doing it Sainters!
Coffield appears to me as a pure HBF. They really need a top notch extractor. In that respect, I doubt they keep both picks. They will need to trade.

I have watched a few more games the last few nights. This draft isn't that shallow.... some interesting prospects out there.
Next year has 3 really great looking prospects, so you would love Carlton, North or Saints future first. I think the Lions will rise and leave these three at the bottom.

I'm the opposite. I'm actually really big on Constable, and he's one of my favourites for our pick at 8. I watched all of his highlights just now, I get why they don't show you him as a clearance beast, but that description comes a lot from his school footy and TAC Cup form this year as well. He's been simply killing it in school footy, him and Andrew Brayshaw racking up masses of the footy for Haileybury. I think he had 46 touches in the last or second-last round, and this wasn't an anomaly.

He is a genuine contested ball-winner on the inside with elite hands, comparable to Macrae, Bontempelli, as well as being a really solid contested mark. His kicking is above-average for an inside mid and he spreads to win the ball on his outside. His general athleticism is pretty impressive. His tackling is ferocious, although it could be a bit more manic (i.e. he could post higher tackle numbers in games). The key is that his production, at all levels, has been excellent and consistent, which suggests that his game will transfer to AFL level easily. The video which really excites me is the one below. I was at the ground that game and he impressed me more than anyone else that day.

Sure, he won't be able to walk straight into a midfield unit, but he is arguably as capable as a midfielder as he is a medium defender, where he started off his year playing. This proficiency will allow him to develop into an inside mid gradually while still maintaining a spot at AFL level, if all goes to plan, circa Callum Mills.

Off half back, he doesn’t appear to be someone that naturally intercepts the ball. He took just the one intercept mark in the 3 metro games that are available for viewing. While he’s a smart user, he won’t ever be lethal by foot or break any lines with his foot skills. Athletically he will find it harder at AFL level as he’s not the quickest and doesn’t appear to have a good side step or great agility. I think for this reason he needs to spend more time on the inside as this is where he can have a much bigger influence on the game with his elite hands and big body. I have my doubts though.

He only averaged about 2 clearances a game in the champs and about 4 clearances a game at TAC level. Yes I know he spends a fair bit of time off half back, but I’d still like that to be higher. I don’t think he reads the ball off the ruckman’s hand as well as others in the draft and I’d like him to show a bit more aggression in the contest. His contested possession count was low in the champs and as mentioned his tackle count is low.

I’ll get a better look at him when I watch him live in the next couple weeks, things look different live. From the 3 games I've seen though, he looks like a solid B grade talent to me rather than an A grader which is what you want your top 10 pick to be.

Saints in the bottom 3 next season? Serious?

Their best player retired. Unlikely to get in a big name FA. Not much coming through in the VFL to be excited about. I see a lot of potential improvement around them and their two top ten picks will take at least a year to do enough to lift them up the ladder.

Nah, but they'll miss finals again imo unless they pick up a handy free agent/trade or two. Losing Riewoldt and likely Montagna will hurt them and will counteract a fair amount of their natural improvement as a team I think.

When you consider we traded the 2014 1st rounder for Boyd, 2015 1st rounder for Dunkley and Collins and our 2016 1st rounder was English at pick 19, which any other year would be technically outside the 1st round... we haven't had a 1st for ages, so just keen to go down the line of best available talent.

They have a good list manager, draft assets and don't struggle attracting players. I reckon they will be in amongst it

Why is that? I mean very unsuccessful small club, yet they snag a lot of the FA, and tempt others to nominate the club.

Outside of Jack Steele and Carlisle, who have they attracted that had high interest? Carlisle had question marks over him and Steele is a B grader along with Koby Stevens. Not buying into their hype just yet (And yes, i'm well aware of our lack of free agency targeting success).

I personally have felt all year that the Saints will snag Kelly. They have the coin and the draft assets to trade for him, they also have more of a future that they can sell unlike Norf and Carlton. So I reckon they'll trade one of their 2 top 10 picks.
Having said that I can see them going after Coffield, I was at the game yesterday and they really struggled moving it from half back to half forward on the rebound. They need a good HBF and a couple of good mids and they'll be in much better shape.

Kelly would cost both picks I'd think. Maybe a late pick back to the saints but they lose both imo for Kelly. Dudes worthy of a pick 1 trade equivalent. 22 year old mid whose pretty much guaranteed AA honours and most likely bnf in a year GWS could snag a flag (hopefully they **** it up though).

totally agree re: value but I would have thought if he nominates that pick 7 & pick ~24(?) would get it done. Similar to the Dangerfield trade.

just a run down..

Saints will get Kelly -spoke to a family member at the East Brighton Vampires game on Sunday.

He wants to move to Brighton to be with family and friends now saints back home.

top 10 will go..

Bris-Dow
G Coast-Davies-Uniacke
Carlt-Rayner
N Melb-Cerra
Frem-Naughton
Pies-Brander
GWS-Balta
GWS-Coffield
Doggies--Stephenson 189cm Wingman
Melb-Higgins

Hayes,Fogarty,Garner,Constable,Clarke might feature....

We have picks 9,26 and 39 at this stage then 80-81..... so will need to trade to get better picks.

On the table will be:
Dickson early 3rd round
Roberts late second early 3rd round
Honeychurch 4th round pick
Campbell late second early 3rd round
C.Smith ??
Suckling.....??
Crameri...Melb want him so late second
Webb second round pick
Redpath...Richmond have already asked about
Hamilton...? pick 90

Lets face its only Dickson,Roberts,Crameri,Webb,Redpath,Campbell that might get anything....

So gone are:
Cloke
Hamilton
Boyd
Murphy

Off the Rookie list surely Prudden will be gone.

My choice get rid off stock :
Roberts-Collingwood would love him pick pick 36
Redpath-Richmond would love him pick 50
Crameri-Melbourne will love him 47
Webb-Everyone wants him hawthorn super keen 35

Pick 9 -Stephenson just what we need outside wingman that kicks goals
Pick 29-Ling class left footer
Pick -Brett Bewley from Williamstown guys a gun and perfect fit for us at 22..
late picks grab a Ruck guy.

They don't have a second rounder

I hope the saints do trade one of their picks. Helps us out at 9 potentially

So.. I still really want Rayner. He'd be perfect for us. Slot him into the forward line next year - will give us extra fire power from day one, not to mention much needed speed to help lock the ball in. With the ability to have stints in the midfield.

LETS GO AFTER PICK #1 OR #2 and make it happen!

A) melbourne won't give up a second rounder for Crameri and sign him as a delisted free agent
b) thanks for the credit on your post :oops:

Freo already have Hamling, Pearce, Logue, Cox and Collins as young tall defenders. It's probably likely they trade one if they want to go with a Naughton or Brander. I think they would be hoping for one of the mids to slip though.

He has attitude and production issues. I wouldn't want us taking him with pick 9. We already have a questionable match-winner in Stringer who can go missing. Rayner hasn't yet shown the ability to consistently win ball through the midfield or have the endurance necessary to play as a full-time midfielder. I'm also not convinced by his power through the midfield, and his ability to win hard ball and burst through the contest. He, also, simply does not have the fitness necessary to play AFL early in his career, and even if he does he would not have the fitness to make repeat defensive efforts playing forward.
