He has attitude and production issues. I wouldn't want us taking him with pick 9. We already have a questionable match-winner in Stringer who can go missing. Rayner hasn't yet shown the ability to consistently win ball through the midfield or have the endurance necessary to play as a full-time midfielder. I'm also not convinced by his power through the midfield, and his ability to win hard ball and burst through the contest. He, also, simply does not have the fitness necessary to play AFL early in his career, and even if he does he would not have the fitness to make repeat defensive efforts playing forward.

Haven't heard of any attitude issues? As in he doesn't work hard enough?
I don't think it's very concerning that an 18 year old goes missing from time to time, as what he does do is all class. You seem to be a harder judge than me in that regard. Match winners are hard to find - when you have the opportunity to nab one, I personally think you go for it.

However its a stretch to think we'll have the ability to trade up regardless.

His school footy and TAC Cup form suggest that his work ethic is not up to scratch for a speculative no. 1 pick. He should have dominated the entire AGSV competition with his size and talent, but instead he had 1-2 impressive games, the rest he sat on the outside and waited for the ball to be delivered to him. These work ethic issues are why his TAC Cup form has been so inconsistent, and why he does not cope with heavy defensive pressure well. I've said it before, that school footy is the best time for potential draftees to show how they can dominate despite being defensively targeted, and guys like Constable, Davies-Uniacke, Cerra, Fogarty and Moore have all shown that to aplomb. Rayner didn't - one example being where he was completely nullified in a half being targeted by a 15-year-old.

I have no qualms about his talent. He does some freakish things and has shown some excellent performances. These, however, are marred by poorer performances in games where he has been defensively targeted. This, in conjunction with his poor endurance (why I cannot see him as a midfielder), is my reasoning for why I have doubts over his ability to have any consistent success at AFL level for at least a few years.

Also we tend to target players (with the exception of Jake Stringer) who are very good endurance running machines. Unlikely to trade up for someone who isn't one.

Also how would we get the No.1 pick because we need our pick next year for West who is currently sitting in the top 10 for next years crop.

I'll give it a go

Key Defender- Jarrod Brander or Aaron Naughton
Small Defender- If you mean HBF then Nick Coffield
Inside Mid- Probably Luke Davies-Uniacke specifically for the inside stuff
Outside Mid- For pure outside probably Lochie O'Brien, but Jaidyn Stephenson can play outside mid well and is a better player overall (best spot atm is up forward) and Paddy Dow is my favourite mid, and he goes inside and out
Genuine Medium/Small Forward- Cameron Rayner
Key Forward- You'd have to go far down the list for a pure KPF, but those who can play there who will go high are Jarrod Brander, Sam Hayes and Noah Balta.
Ruck- Sam Hayes

Agreed with the statement re: endurance. We did pull the trigger on Stringer as you said, so we mustn't be totally against drafting a guy that needs improvement in that area when they have explosive speed and skill on their side.

With the FS system, if we don't have a first doesn't that mean we can just pick him up with our next available pick? Or does it work on the points system now, where we could then just combine a few picks to get to the amount of points needed?

Its definitely a stretch - Tough to see us having the ability or assets to trade up regardless.

We can go into deficit if he's that good

But I don't really care about getting the first round pick so much this year for some reason..

Key Defender- Brander, Naughton, Petty
Small Defender- Coffield, Garner, Paton, Appleby (if you mean defensive type)
Inside Mid- Cerra, LDU, Brayshaw, Constable
Outside Mid- Stephenson, Clark, O'Brien, Domic, Ross
Genuine Medium/Small Forward- Allen, Miers, Moore, Sambono, Handley
Key Forward- Dixon (probably only one drafted)
Ruck- Hayes, Coleman-Jones, Meek
There in no particular order.

You make some great points! I definitely agree that's an indication of having a poor mindset.
This kid is a carbon copy of stringer - the good and unfortunately the bad it seems.

As suggested in the trade thread could pick 9 + 2018 first + player/picks get something like pick 2? Maybe even at a stretch a 2018 pick maybe 3rd round for points.

2017 top 2 pick. Is there a player worth trading up for?
2018 west (rated by some as top 10)
2019 libba, where is he looking at landing at this early stage?

Not really anyone worth trading that high up for, still no clear stand out number ones

Dow has speed and gets his hands dirty, but his numbers haven't been fantastic

If we do trade out a few players, it might be worth getting another early pick this year if we accumulate a bunch of draft picks next year.

No.

It is an even draft this year so there is absolutely no point in trading up. Likely to get as good a player at 9 than at 2-3

I would be filthy if we traded our first next year for a 7 or 8 pick upgrade, basically trading out a very useful asset. Could trade pick 9 this year for a player and our first rounder next year for a player instead, at least that way we get value out of the pick next year. Throwing a future first into a trade is just wasteful.

We need to keep in mind we also have an Academy prospect next year who is also inside the top 30 odd in next year's draft too. Need to keep them points.
We still might get future draft picks for players we trade this year to, I don't think we'll see as many players go next year like we will this year

Coffield, Xavier Richards, Adam Sambono and Oskar Baker and done.

Note- Easy on the potatoes fella.;)
You lose me after the first one lol. I don't think that Richards will be on the AFL radar unless he comes and stars in a half decent league.

9 - Nick Coffield (bob replacement)
26 - James Worpel (we need speed and power in the center)
39 - Gryan Miers (Goalzzz)

Try and get another pick around 40 and pick up Hugh Dixon (more goalzzz).

Never took you for a Worpel fan. How quick is he?
I'm not sure who I'm hoping will be there at our second

You are probably right with Xavier Richards, i hoped he sacked
his manager as that was bizarre last year. Oskar Baker plays
with Ed Barlow the former Swan/Dog at Aspley he was a
Brisbane academy kid who got dumped and has responded the
best way possible. Goal kicking wingman and quick and very
skilled, a young Keith Greig of sorts. Adam Sambono is maybe
a little lazy, but is mercurial if not risky.

Think I've heard it been mentioned at sub 3 sec. Does have some good burst speed from what I've seen.

Defensive running very good, is a bigger body than 90% of our inside mids already. Needs to work on his footskills but probably a little better than Petruccelle's at this stage.

I was pretty disappointed with Petrucelles champs, did he at least bounce back at the TAC level?

I loved Worpel at the start of the year. Thought he'd be top 5 if he improved. Really shows that other players can come on quickly, especially those returning from injury like Cerra.

I'm guessing Gryan rotates in the midfield?
