Next year is supposed to be an excellent year, however with West in the pipeline (and the reports I've seen have him playing well as an under-ager) would we consider trading away next years' first rounder for a first round pick this year? Perhaps we could pick up an extra 2018 second rounder to make up some of the points difference for bidding on Rhylee.

This was my thinking as well..
It could work and means we effectively end up getting Rhylee with a combination of points that add to a first rounder. And gain an additional first to use in this draft.

If we keep our first for next year it's likely we'll have to use that on Rhylee anyway. So we may as well try to get the most out of it. It would be safer to try to receive a few more picks for next years draft so we have enough points for Rhylee and any academy prospects (Buku is looking good) through any player movements this year.

Definitely something to consider.

We also have Buku Khamis playing well as an underager. Another top 30 chance. Better to stay in next years draft.

I simply don't agree with this. I think he's in the top 5 most competent inside mids in the whole pool. He has size and knows how to lots of contested ball consistently even when he's played in defence for the bulk of the last two years. His skills, for a genuine inside mid, are excellent and he has above-average contested marking for his height. This combination of factors shows, to me, that he has enough upside to become an A-grader, for sure. His athleticism is completely fine, as well. It's no hindrance to his game. Poor athleticism has never stopped us from taking players in the past, i.e. Dunkley, Webb, even Collins, and Constable's speed and agility far surpasses that of those guys.
I agree more with this than your post where you said he was athletic, it's more compared to other players in that position but he has better skills than most of the pure inside mids going round, just not sure how his contested game stacks up to the same players. Also a big fan of Cerra though. From what I have seen he has good skills and whilst there are question marks on his athleticism too he has the skills/endurance/physical attributes to make up for it plus his production is also good. Shown he can be dangerous up forward too and had that game for ranges where he had a heap of scoring shots so must be smart with the way he uses his body too. Cerra at this stage is in that top handful who are just ahead of players like Constable and Coffield but it's not a massive gap between them.

Only seen Khamis listed.
Saw a stream of a jets game with him playing, he's a good size already. Liked him playing back but didn't get a heap of the ball. Hopefully has a good rate of development next year. Has plenty of tools, looks athletic but also had a decent feel for the game. Bit rough around the edges but can see him doing really well once he is playing full time.

I'm wondering what we do with these rookie picks of our we are likely to have. Reckon we could possibly have as many as 3.

I think a mature age player could be on the cards if the draft is as shallow as they say it is.
I wouldn't mind getting a ruck in the rookie draft, many good rucks come from there. Maybe your boy Meek might be available then?

Possibly. He is having a very good year though so he could go ND.

Ned Reeves is the other. Not sure we will go this way if the rumors around Martin have any traction.

Joshua Jaska is one that I like the look of, plays so much like Morris it isn't funny.

Wouldn't mind a taller mid and of course we need forwards.

Speaking of Jaska - is he purely a shutdown defender or does he have offensive ability as well?

I'm massive on Cerra. He runs a very, very close second to Coffield for who I'd want at 9. I see so much Pendlebury in him, feel he's the most likely of anyone in the draft to be a success.
Pretty much no chance he's there though

I'd be wary of trading out our first pick from a good draft next year on the idea that we'd be using it on West anyway. Ratings this far out mean nothing, and he's not universally rated top ten anyway. Knightmare has him top 30. We could very easily use our first pick and get both West and Khamis with later picks.

I still think we need to prioritise midfielders with kicks that break the game open a bit, players that can go the journey from 50 and aren't afraid to do so on the run. Big problem I have seen with the current group is not only players who can't go the journey on the run from 50 (Dahl, Hunter, McLean, Daniel) but also players with funky kicking styles that can't kick a ball in a straight line whilst running in a straight line (Macrae, Suckling). I feel this is a real hindrance on our efficiency in the front half. Would love to see JJ playing wing and forward of a wing this season in a similar role to Hawthorn's Isaac Smith. Also a big fan of Dale because he's a good finisher and like I said it's something we lack a bit at the moment. This is why I am still drawn to Lachie O'Brien for us. Would be another outside player but has elite qualities that will translate to AFL level easily. I really don't know what's gone wrong for him this year, although has had injuries at unfortunate times like just before the champs. He has a great leg and is fast, has good endurance and isn't afraid to launch a shot on the run. Has similar qualities to the other top outside players in the competition. I think he'll really come good once in the AFL system when running patterns improve. Is only a matter of how a coach wants to use him really. Could be one that goes higher than people are thinking at the moment.

Has anyone here seen Jordan Butts from Murray play?

Very late birthday, sounds capable of playing both ends. Few traits we generally look favourably at.

Yeah I saw him on Saturday and liked what I've seen so far. I posted a report couple days ago. He impressed me a lot as a defender, read the play well and was used as loose man at times. He runs and carries it well for a big man and took a couple really strong marks as well. Didn't see him up forward.

Managed to rack up 30 touches on the weekend too

Yeah they were kicking it back and forth to each other trying to switch play a bit.

Being so young you'd imagine he has a great scope for improvement, maybe we'll pull another Lewis Young move and pick him up. I wouldn't be against it.

I'd be fine with it. We did take two raw talls last year plus English though, so perhaps the club may want someone that's a bit more developed.
