No chance Miers goes top 10 let alone top 5. Great effort tonight but he kicked most of his goals having no direct opponent. Terrible one on one defending by Sandy.
Miers didn't look like wanting a contested ball all night either. Looked at times to hold back until the ball spilled out.
If we took with our first I'd be filthy.

He had a knack of getting to the right spots. Remember one in particular where a ball was smothered by his teammate, it popped up to him 25m out and he kicked it. I think that crafty forward would be handy, particularly with Dickson likely coming to an end in next couple of years.

Is Owens someone that will be looked at? Thought he did well to clunk a few for Sandy at different times also.

I agree its still unlikely Miers pushes into top 10. He's hot and cold at different times like all small forwards.
However he could be pushing top 20.
The value of good small forwards might be slowly starting to rise with the way the game is played now.
Look at some of our best forwards in last years finals (Picken,Dickson,Clay Smith).
And both this years Grand Final teams have a decent number of dangerous small forwards who can do a bit of everything.

Owens has played great this quarter
One I have taken a like to lately.

We've taken 3 of the BOG winners in the TAC Cup GF since 2010. It's destiny.

And he is another I've been all over all year.

Amartey strikes me as the type to seduce a team into picking him far too high based on athleticism and "potential."
He is a rookie at best.

He reminds me a bit of Young. Seen him make a few really good plays in the finals with some kicks, multiple pressure acts and getting in some deft touches but at the same time he can murder the ball.

He is a huge risk/reward type.

His contested game is normally ok, I'm not too worried about this. His field kicking under pressure is what I have a concern over though. Agreed he was often left unattended tonight. His opponent for a fair amount of time in Smith, was often off ball hunting.

Yeah no way we should take him at 9, no problem if we take him at 26.

One that surprised me was Walker, really liked his game for someone I hadn't really heard much of.

That ending was heartbreaking, Amartey's going to remember that for the rest of his life. It was such a good mark too.

Some team is going to really like Miers and take him early. Not top ten early but possibly first round. Would love him at our second after that game. That goal from the pocket in the third was ****ing special.

Also liked Owens (huge last quarter) and Styles' first half.

Ling and Worpel disappointing. Ling picked it up in the last quarter though.

Brayshaw OK. Constable clearly injured.

I can't see Miers going first round. The only genuine small forward that has actually risen into the first round recently is Daniel Rioli, and he was a massive reach for Richmond who were, at the time, in dire need of goalkicking smalls. I was getting around him last night just because he's electric, and that third quarter was insane, but you don't get value out of taking small forwards very early (Pickett, Ah Chee). 26 is very high to be taking a small forward, particularly one who has so many unconventional aspects to his game. Clubs tend to reach for speculative types, circa Balta, and guys with potential. It's pretty easy to put a cap on the potential of small forwards - they're not that enticing unless they fill a need. Otherwise, they're better off as late-rookie types. You can find just about anyone with enough drive, on-field workrate and goal sense with later picks and they can come in and do the job, like Papley has done for Sydney.

Miers has, however, shown more than most small types throughout this year, and I have supreme confidence that he can walk into an AFL club and be successful right from the get-go, why I think we should be looking hard at him with 26.

The thing that worries me about getting Miers or not is that GWS have 2 picks in the 20's before us and are looking for small forwards from what I've heard.

If Smith leaves, they really only have Greene. They were playing Matt De Boer up forward which says a lot.

It sucks to think about, but we may end up with Geelong's pick 20 for Stringer anyway.

Also how did Adam Garner not get a State combine invite?

Hardly see the guy beaten 1v1 and is a contested marking machine.

Also we go good with cousins of AFL players lol

Agree with his skill issues. His style isn't too efficient and looks like he needs time to get his kick away with the sweeping style. He definitely needs to work on it.

Not too keen for pick 26 personally. Would be ok with our next.

IF we do get pick 20 as part of a trade for Stringer, everyone who is OOC goes and the rumors of Roarke's upgrade are true (leaves us with 4 live picks in the ND and 2 in the RD) then who would you guys pick?

Haven't seen him play other than last night so would love some input from others who have watched him more but hows his defensive side? Didn't look like he was overly concerned about chasing and harassing last night tbh (although when you kick 7 goals that can be excused :P) but I think for a player like him to make it, it needs to be a major part of his game

Yeah, pick 39 would be ideal. I have him around the 30 mark personally, but I won't mind if we take him at 26. It may depend on what's available.

I've seen a game where he has put it altogether. His defensive game can be inconsistent though which is not unusual at this level.

These are the names I'm considering around each pick, some will be gone I know.

Pick 9 - Stephenson, Coffield, Darcy Fogarty, Brander, Richards, Balta, Naughton, Brayshaw

Pick 20 - Higgins, O'Brien, Hayes, Garner, Murphy

Pick 26 - Petty, Bonar, Tim Kelly, Ling, Allen, Lachlan Fogarty

Pick 39 - Miers, Houlihan, Kreugar, McPherson, Dixon, Penrith, Ross, Ballard, Butts, Oskar Baker, Walker, Stoddart, Taylor, Coleman-Jones, Day, Wooller

Rookies - Daniels, Bailey Henderson, Sambono, Johnston, Jaska, McGannon, Fritsch, Stephens, Nineytte, Domic, Miller, Gowers, Vandermeer, Starcevich, Farrell, Thompson

This is my early call on what I hope we get

Pick 9 - Jaidyn Stephenson (Goal sense, Quick, can be a threat aerially)
Pick 20 - Lachie O'Brien (Quick, Classy user, good aerially)
Pick 26 - Tim Kelly (Classy user, X-factor, goal sense)
Pick 39 - Ethan Penrith (Goal sense, Quick, Elite defensively)

Rookie 1 - Ben Miller (mobile, versatile, competitive)
Rookie 2 - Bayley Fritsch (Goal sense, threat aerially, good kick)

Category B rookie list the American ruck

So that would give us

Medium fwd/mid
Outside mid/half back
Mature Aged inside/outside mid/fwd
Small fwd/small def
Tall forward/tall defender/2nd ruck
Mature aged Medium forward

Realistically this is what I could see the club doing and the players that are probably more likely to be available

Pick 9 - Andrew Bayshaw (Strong improvement, good character, probably best available)
Pick 20 - Joel Garner (Very good character, Leader, good aerially)
Pick 26 - Tim Kelly (Fits a need, Classy user, goal sense)
Pick 39 - Jackson Ross (Big Upside, Strong overhead, athletic)

Rookie 1 - Brent Daniels (Quick, hard at it, good pressure)
Rookie 2 - Charlie Thompson (Goal sense, hard at it, good pressure)

So that would give us

Inside/outside mid
Medium defender/mid
Mature Aged inside outside mid/fwd
Outside Medium mid/fwd
Small fwd/mid
Small fwd/mid

I won't be surprised if we don't take a tall in this years draft.
