TOP 2017 NAB AFL DRAFT PROSPECTS:

James Worpel (15 games, 11 goals, ave. 20 disposals and six tackles in 2016): “James is a very strong midfielder in the mould of (Collingwood’s) Taylor Adams or (North Melbourne’s) Ben Cunnington, who both came through our system. He’s a very similar player to them but he’s a lot quicker – he’s more explosive and he’s a much better runner. Nothing fazes him. He’s in the AFL Academy.”

Cassidy Parish (19 games, ave. 19 disposals in 2016): “Cassidy’s a lot different to his brother Darcy (currently at Essendon) – he’s not as polished but he’s a really big midfielder. We could probably play him at centre half forward if we really needed to. He’s a great stoppage player and he exits the packs really well and racks up lots of possessions. He’s a bit ungamely but he’s a very effective player. A lot of AFL recruiters would be interested in him to replace those big midfielders like (Sydney’s) Josh Kennedy or (Essendon’s) Jobe Watson – he sort of fits that mould.”

Adam Garner (three games in 2016): “Adam’s a cousin of (St Kilda’s) Paddy McCartin and he plays a similar position – he’ll play as a full forward/centre half forward this year. I think Paddy’s more mobile but Adam’s got himself really fit after having a few injuries in the past. He played for Vic Country U16s two years ago and just needs to have an injury-free season and put it together.”

Ethan Floyd (11 games, five goals, ave. 14 disposals in 2016): “Ethan’s a left-foot winger who’s an elite runner. He’s running exceptional times in our 2km time trials. He’s really matured and pushed himself this pre-season.”

Matthew Ling (five games, ave. nine disposals in 2016): “Matthew’s another winger who played with us in the finals last year. He looks a likely type as well.”

Cooper Stephens (11 games, ave. 14 disposals in 2016): “Cooper plays on a half back flank and will probably go into the midfield this year.”


POTENTIAL SURPRISE PACKET:

Gryan Miers (five games, three goals, ave. 13 disposals and four tackles in 2016): “Gryan played some games towards the end of last year and surprised us as an on-baller. He’s a bit like (the Western Bulldogs’) Luke Dahlhaus. He went back to his local senior club Grovedale and dominated in their finals campaign until they got knocked out. He ran under six minutes in a 2km time trial over the pre-season, so you’ve got to take notice of the kid because he’s a running machine.”


CONFIRMED OVER-AGE PLAYERS:

Hayden Elliot (pictured - 19 games, ave. nine disposals and 16 hitouts in 2016): “Hayden probably should have been playing in a key position last year but we don’t usually have many talls and he had to play in the ruck. We’ll give him another run this year as a centre half forward/centre half back because that’s where AFL recruiters want to see him play.”

Charlie Francis (12 games, ave. nine disposals and four tackles in 2016): “Charlie had fairly significant heart problems as a 17-year-old which he’s gotten over, so we want to give him another year. If his heart over-worked too much he could have suffered a heart attack – it was that serious. With medication and management and the fact he’s prepared to take the risk, we’re playing him. He had a really good season last year.”

Peterson Kol (no games in 2016): “Peterson’s been injured for two years so we want to give him a bit of a crack. It’s been nothing major – just hamstrings and ankles and all sorts of things. His brother Harry won our best-and-fairest a couple of years ago. He’s a really tall athletic kid and we just want to get him on the track and give him a chance.”

Jack Walters (six games, ave. 14 disposals in 2016): “Jack’s a cousin of (Geelong Brownlow Medallist) Paddy Dangerfield and he was showing really good form at the start of last year but unfortunately hurt his knee and missed the majority of the season. He didn’t require an operation but it was pretty significant – he was very close to doing his ACL. We want to give him another crack as well.”

That Miers kid sound like players Dalrymple has liked over the past few years. He likes players who can kick goals from playing onball and have huge running ability. Will have to keep an eye on how he goes.

I always relate it to being tall, fast a built like a footballer. BUT have no actual ball handling skills.

Charlie Spargo (pictured - eight games, eight goals, ave. 18 disposals in 2016): “Charlie’s a small forward/on-baller. He’s from Albury in NSW so he’s part of the GWS Giants Academy. He’ll play in the Division 2 U18 Championships in their squad and I imagine he’ll play for the Allies in Division 1 as well. He played some very good footy for us last year and he was very good for NSW/ACT as well. We’re really hopeful for Charlie’s draft chances this year. He’s an AFL Academy player.”


POTENTIAL SURPRISE PACKETS:

Doulton Langlands (16 games, ave. 14 disposals in 2016): “Doulton was one of our best bottom-age players last year. He’s a very quick player and he’s really built his strength up this year. He’s a really good size – 188cm and 80kg now – and he’s a terrific athlete with power and speed. We think he’ll attract the attention of AFL clubs. He’ll be an academy player for the Giants as well.”

Daniel Johnston (seven games, four goals, ave. eight disposals in 2016): “Daniel’s another boy from NSW. He’ll be a key forward and he’ll play a little bit in the ruck for us as well. We think he’s got the size and the power to attract a lot of attention.”

Jordon Butts (11 games, ave. 13 disposals and three marks in 2016): “Jordon’s a 197cm key defender and he can also go forward. He played some good footy for us last year as a bottom-age player. He’s actually born on the 31st of December so he’ll play all his TAC Cup football as a 16-year-old and 17-year-old. We think he’s a good prospect.”

David Smith (not on list in 2016): “We’ve just uncovered David this year – he was doing a bit of work with the Laguntas program at Richmond. He’s a top-age indigenous boy who has phenomenal speed – he consistently runs 2.7 seconds in the 20m sprint which is elite. He hasn’t played a lot of footy and this is the first year we’ve seen him. We’re hoping to use his explosive speed and power and improve his footy this year.”


CONFIRMED OVER-AGE PLAYERS:

Nick Richards (18 games, 15 goals, ave. 17 disposals in 2016): “Nick was a bit of a bolter at the end of last year and attracted a bit of attention from AFL clubs. He was named our best player in the finals so we’ll be looking for some more improvement from him. He’ll play more of a role around the ball this year – he played a bit as an outside midfielder and small forward last year, so we’re hoping to see him win some more contested footy.”

Ben Paton (20 games, 12 goals, ave. 16 disposals and five tackles in 2016): “Ben showed a lot of improvement last year. His top-age year was his first in the program, so we’re keen to have another look at him.”

Isaac Wallace (12 games, ave. 18 disposals and five tackles in 2016): “Isaac played some terrific footy for us last year but suffered a broken leg during the season as well. On the back of also having a broken leg as a 16-year-old, we want to expose him to another year of TAC Cup football.”

Hayden McLean (19 games, 27 goals, ave. 11 disposals, five marks and seven hitouts in 2016): “Hayden had a big bottom-age year and played in our grand final side. He’s a key forward/ruckman and can probably play a bit of centre half back too, so he’s quite flexible and has a really good impact on the game. He’s 196/197cm so he’s a decent lump of a lad and he looks like he’s getting fitter and stronger. He’s mobile enough to get on-ball and almost be another midfielder as well as doing really well in the ruck. He’s in the AFL Academy.”


POTENTIAL SURPRISE PACKETS:

Andrew Brayshaw (seven games, ave. 11 disposals in 2016): “Andy was part of our grand final side last year. He played small forward/small back utility-type roles in his bottom-age year as he’s nice and tough and he can really focus and do a job. It’s going to be interesting to see how he translates that into the midfield this year and whether he can take it up a notch.”

Isaac Morrisby (14 games, 20 goals, ave. 10 disposals and four marks in 2016): “Isaac was also part of our grand final side last year. We’re hoping he can dominate as a key forward this year. He’s got a fantastic set of hands and kicked five goals in a half in the U17 All Stars game last year. He’s a good size at TAC Cup level (191cm) but he’s not going to be a massive bloke. We’re hoping he can show his ability to get around the ground a bit more this year.”

Will Walker (11 games, 15 goals, ave. nine disposals in 2016): “Will’s come from a soccer background. He was a little bit unlucky not to play in the U17 All Stars game last year – he was included in the squad but broke his finger. He’s fairly raw to footy but he’s a great little athlete and I think he’s going to be an excitement package this year.”

Kai Owens and Joel Armartey (both not on list in 2016): “Up until the last year or so they’ve been concentrating on basketball. Kai’s mum is from Japan and Joel’s dad is from Ghana. We hope they’re going to be surprise packets and jump out of nowhere. Both are tall and very athletic. Kai’s had a few little setbacks with knee tendinitis, but Joel’s probably exceeded our expectations to this stage in the impact he’s been having playing in the ruck and also forward in practice matches.”


CONFIRMED OVER-AGE PLAYERS:

Hamish Brayshaw (12 games, 18 goals, ave. 18 disposals, six marks and four tackles in 2016): “Hamish is still getting over foot surgery and we’re hoping that without a hiccup he can be ready for Round 1. He ended up playing the last month of last season with a broken foot – he was unaware of it and we were unaware, and we found that out post-grand-final. He’s a pretty tough kid. We think his leadership’s fantastic, being our captain last year in a premiership season.”

Ari Sakeson (pictured - 14 games, ave. 16 disposals and five marks in 2016): “I think Ari was a little bit stiff at the drafts because he finished the season very well. He has to keep improving on his game sense and his execution but he’s a hell of a competitor and a really nice athlete. We’ll probably look to play him in a few roles a bit further up the ground than his key defensive post to expand his horizons a bit. He’s come back as fit as a fiddle this year and he’s looking quite exciting.”

Barclay Miller (no games in 2016): “Barclay’s a St Kilda international rookie prospect. He was a national-level basketballer in New Zealand. He’s coming along quite nicely but in essence he’s already on an AFL list, similar to (Hawthorn’s) Kurt Heatherley here in 2013.”
